Head Coach JAN SCHEFKOWITZ Head Coach

It’s hard to imagine, in the brisk, chill air that is so common to our valley this time of year, that a “warmer-weather climate” is what brought Head Softball Coach Jan Schefkowitz to Cal State Stanislaus in 1992. Entering her 20th season at the helm of the Warriors Softball program, Schefkowitz lends her impressive expertise.  During her first six years at Cal State Stanislaus, she spent her time as both head coach for volleyball and softball. Since 1998, Schefkowitz has been able to channel all her attention into her true love — softball — and has recorded the second-highest winning average among softball coaches for the University in the past 25 years. Schefkowitz will reach the milestone of 500 victories

2007 NFCA West Region Coaching Staff of the Year

as a Warrior in early 2012. In 2007, she led the team to a new level, as the Warriors won the NCAA West Regional championship and advanced to the NCAA National Championship tournament for the first time. It was at the regional tournament at Warrior Softball Field when the team elevated the program to new heights under the guidance of Schefkowitz. Her team defended home field to win the West and representing the region at the national tournament in Akron, Ohio, before bowing out with a semifinal loss to top-ranked Columbus State. When it was all said and done, the Warriors turned in the winningest season in history with a 50-20 mark. Schefkowitz and her assistants were named the NFCA West Region Coaching Staff of the Year. In 2008, Schefkowitz again led the Warriors to a NCAA Division II West Regional appearance after winning the program’s first California Collegiate Athletic Association tournament championship. Stanislaus would make a return trip to the regionals in 2009, making it fourth consecutive (and sixth overall) appearances in the NCAA postseason tournament for the program. In 2006, the Warriors appeared in their third Regional appearance and went 2-2 in the tournament with an impressive upset win over San Francisco State to fend off elimination. The team also boasted an All-American with outfielder Megan Law taking third-team honors, as well as the CCAA Freshman of the Year in Meghan Franksen. Schefkowitz was named Coach of the Year by her peers in the CCAA in 2000, after taking the Warriors to the NCAA Championship with a 44-20 record. She continued the team’s success in 2001 with another 40-win season and the team’s second postseason appearance. After graduating in 1978 with a B.S. in physical education from the State University of New York at Brockport, Schefkowitz obtained her master’s in physical education from San Francisco State while helping to lead the softball team to the AIAW Division III College World Series in 1981 as an assistant coach. She also made a coaching stop at Chicago State University before returning to New York to coach seven years at SUNYCortland, winning three conference championships and earning three coach-of-the-year honors. In 1992, Schefkowitz found a home in the small but ever-growing city of Turlock. Schefkowitz was a four-sport varsity letter winner in high school. She also played on the San Jose Rainbows professional softball team.

Assistant Coach

Nicole Carter joins the Cal State Stanislaus coaching staff after she spent five seasons in the UC Riverside softball program from 2007 to 2011. She appeared in 71 games with 44 starts in her career but sat out two seasons due to injury. During this time it is when Carter developed analyizing and coaching skills. A native of Upland, Calif., Carter was a two-time letterwinner at Upland High School and played for the perennial powerhouse Gordon Panthers club team. Carter, who helped coached the SoCal Mirage travel club team, was a communications major with a minor in ethnic studies. She graduated from UC Riverside in 2011 and currently resides in Merced.

Missy Corral

Student Assistant Missy Corral completed two outstanding years at Cal State Stanislaus in 2010-11, primary as the starting catcher. In two seasons, Corral batted .294 with 23 doubles, which ranks her eighth on the CSUS all-time list. Corral also drew 59 walks, putting her ninth in the record books. She is also on the single season lists five times. Corral was named to the All-CCAA second team after a senior season where she batted .336 with 44 hits, 12 doubles, three homers, drove in 29 runs. She also had 12 sacrifices with 11 successful bunts.

Kim Thurman

Student Assistant Kim Thurman returned to Cal State Stanislaus after a stellar career as a Warrior in 2000-03. Thurman, a two-time All-CCAA selection and 2002 All-Region second team pick, was a member of two Stanislaus teams that advanced to the NCAA Regional tournaments in 2000 and 2001. Thurman was mainly a leadoff batter for the Warriors because of her ability to get on base. Thurman holds the CSUS record for on base percentage in a season (.514) and walks (47). She tallied a school record 115 walks in her career and finished with 238 hits, 31 doubles, nine triples, 290 total bases, scored 124 runs and 33 stolen bases in her career.

CHAMPS!

ARCATA (May 3, 2008) — Alyssa Guzman’s three-run home run in the bottom of the 11th inning finally ended Saturday’s California Collegiate Athletic Association Softball Championships finale, lifting Cal State Stanislaus to a 4-1 win over Cal State San Bernardino and the CCAA title. Earning the CCAA’s automatic berth, the 19th ranked Warriors advance into Wednesday’s NCAA Division II West Region Championships with a 30-21 record. In the championships game, neither team could break through against clutch pitching. Cal State Stanislaus’ Jessica Gaumnitz was toughest of tough, pitching the last seven innings and giving up only one hit on her way to being named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player. Suffering the loss was Tawni Baker, who pitched five solid innings before allowing a single and walked in the 11th. She was relieved by Cassidy Lee, who had started the game and held the Warriors to one hit in her first four innings of work. Lee struck out the first hitter she faced, Jennifer Arnold, before being stung by Guzman’s decisive blast. Cal State Stanislaus took the lead in the bottom of the second on Casey Stephenson’s leadoff home run. Cal State San Bernardino tied the game in its next at-bats, putting runners on via a single and walk before Priscilla Curiel drove home Debbie Shisler with a single of her own. Gaumnitz, who went 3-0 in the tournament, was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player. Jessica Scholl, Alicia Reid, Meghan Franksen, and Kimiko Wright were all named to the All-Tournament team. The Warriors beat Cal State San Bernardino, 6-1, to open the tournament two days earlier and handled Cal State Monterey Bay, 8-4, on Friday to advance to the title game. Gaumnitz allowed just three earned runs on six hits in 18 innings of work. She struckout 13 batters. Offensively for the Warriors, Wright went 6-for-12, Scholl was 4-for-4 and drove in four runs against CSUMB and Franksen played flawless defense. Alyssa Guzman was 3-for-9 with a pair of home runs during the tournament. The victory is the Warriors’ 17th consecutive win away from Turlock, and they are now 20-5 in road games. It was the team’s first conference championship.

2007 National Championship Tournament

’07 Team lifted program to new heights after magical championship The Warriors’ amazing, magical championship run ended when they spotted the top-ranked team in the country two runs without a hit in the fourth inning and could not recover as Cal State Stanislaus dropped to No. 1 Columbus State, 7-1, at the NCAA Division II Softball Championship in Akron, Ohio, on May 19. With the loss, the Warriors end their tremendous run as a final six team in the national tournament. Cal State Stanislaus ended the year 50-20, a new school record, including a West Region championship and finished the year ranked No. 6. The Warriors may not have won the National Championship but what they accomplished in 2007 elevated the program to new heights. “I don’t think anyone on the team was sad (about being eliminated),” head coach Jan Schefkowitz said after the team lost to Columbus State. “We accomplished a lot and we did a lot when we got here. I am so proud of the team. We came to compete and we did that.” The team arrived in Akron full of energy and was poised to show the rest of country what West Coast softball and softball in the competitive California Collegiate Athletic Association was about. After the championship banquet, where centerfielder Megan Law received her second NFCA All-American award, the Warriors seemed eager to take the field at Firestone Stadium. However, they had to wait an entire day before facing Nebraska-Omaha in a night game.

18

Casey Stephenson was the story of the night on May 17 when the junior designated player zoned in and belted two solo home runs against the Mavericks. Jessica Gaumnitz pitched a six-hit shutout as the Warriors took game one, 3-0, over Nebraska-Omaha. Stephenson was later named to the All-Tournament team to cap-off her tremendous postseason. The next night, senior lefty Omaira Estremera pitched the game of her life against a powerful offensive team. She allowed just three hits and struck out five SIU Edwardsville hitters. The Warriors, however, stranded seven runners on base with five in scoring position and dropped the tight-game 1-0 to the eventual champions. Against top-ranked Columbus State, the Warriors uncharacteristically committed four errors and managed just two hits and were eliminated from the tournament after a 7-1 loss. “You can’t make errors at this level and we did and that started a cascade to other errors,” Schefkowitz said after the game. “However I think our players battled as well as they could. Columbus State is a great team and all of the teams here are great teams. You don’t survive when you make errors.” Warriors finished their first National championship appearance 1-2 in three games and was one-hit away from playing in the semifinal game. Now that the program has reached new heights, the Warriors have set their sights on a return trip to the national tournament, at the 2008 NCAA Spring Festival in Houston, Texas.

The California Collegiate Athletic Association has been the nation’s most successful intercollegiate athletic conferences since its establishment in December 1938. The 12-member league is home to some of the nation’s finest NCAA Division II athletic programs in Cal Poly Pomona, Cal State Dominguez Hills, Cal State L.A., Cal State San Bernardino, Cal State Stanislaus, Chico State, CSU, Monterey Bay, Humboldt State, UC San Diego, San Francisco State and Sonoma State. CCAA institutions compete in seven women’s and six men’s conference-sponsored sports. Fall sports include men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer and women’s volleyball. Men’s and women’s basketball are contested in the winter, and women’s tennis, men’s golf, men’s and women’s outdoor track & field, softball and baseball comprise spring competition. CCAA members have won 151 NCAA Championships (102 men, 49 women) all time, far and away the most of any Division II conference. On the men’s side, CCAA members have brought home at least 10 titles in swimming & diving (25), wrestling (16), track & field (13), tennis (11) and baseball (10). CCAA institutions have been very

This is Cal State Stanislaus Location. Location. Location.

Situated in a park-like setting that is unique in the CSU system, new students are immediately drawn to CSU Stanislaus by its tranquil and picturesque environment — the perfect backdrop for focused, serious study. We have 228 acres of lawns, bridges, waterfalls, and ponds that will make students feel as though they are walking through a private park on their way to class. Our campus is considered one of the most beautiful—and safest—public campuses in all of California, where nature coexists in harmony with the pleasing architectural style of our buildings. Looking beyond the natural beauty, students find modern computer and research labs, a technologically enhanced library, and our latest addition, the Nora and Hashem Naraghi Hall of Science.

CSU Stanislaus has again been recognized as one of the country’s best institutions for undergraduate education, according to The Princeton Review. For the sixth consecutive year, CSU Stanislaus is featured in the 2012 edition of the prestigious college guide “The Best 376 Colleges.” CSU Stanislaus is one of only two California State University campuses to receive this honor, and the only one to receive the recognition for six-straight years. Additionally, The Princeton Review recognized CSU Stanislaus as one of the best colleges in the West in its website feature, “2012 Best Colleges: Region by Region,” posted August 1, 2011, on www.PrincetonReview.com. Collectively, schools on the regions’ best lists represent just 25 percent of four-year colleges in the U.S.

This is Cal State Stanislaus Student Life

There’s more to college than attending class, studying, or bubbling in answers on Scantron forms. At CSU Stanislaus , people experience a campus culture that fosters strong relationships between students, faculty, and administrators. Students make lifelong friends with their classmates, association and club members, fraternity brothers, and sorority sisters. Students become part of a vibrant campus life, where activities are plentiful. With close to 100 active student organizations and more than 9,000 potential friends at CSU Stanislaus, there is a niche for everyone.

Call us home

For many, living on campus is part of the college experience. Strong bonds and lifelong friendships are created through the shared experience of campus life. For campus residents, there are no hassles with transportation or parking, and classrooms and other facilities are just steps away from where our students live. The Village at CSU Stanislaus is decidedly not a typical dorm. With the choice of spacious single, double, or triple occupancy suites or single-occupancy apartments, students can pick the one that’s right for them. Privacy, yes, but Village life is anything but dull; with dozens of organized activities — from mixers to dances — students can be as involved as they want to be. The Village boasts two swimming pools, a spa, a total of seven coinless laundry facilities, a computer lab, a study hall, recreation room, sport courts, fitness center, and a new dining hall complete with an outdoor patio.

International Education

CSU Stanislaus students can take an internship in France, visit Malta, apply for a scholarship to China, or spend a summer in Prague. As an example, in a single semester, CSU Stanislaus students were recently studying in Spain, Israel, France, Canada, Australia, and Wales. Best of all, financial aid applies, so students can take courses for the same low fee AND study abroad! CSU Stanislaus was recently selected as one of eight national institutions for the Global Learning for All Program, which means that international/global education is integrated into coursework as an active component.

Faculty facts

CSU Stanislaus employs more than 450 full-time and part-time instructors who have a passion for helping students. The University boasts a low 19 to 1 student-to-teacher ratio. More than 80 percent of faculty hold doctorates, or an equivalent degree in their fields.

Financial Aid

We don’t let money stand in the way of a college education. Recently named one of America’s Best Value Colleges, CSU Stanislaus offers a top-quality education at an affordable price. Our students graduate with a debt load substantially below the national average, thanks, in part, to more than $35 million in financial aid awarded to students annually, with nearly $1 million of that from scholarships.

Internships

Experience gained from internships and fellowships offered at CSU Stanislaus often gives students the advantage in landing that crucial first job on their way to a lifelong career. Leading local, regional, and national companies, businesses, school districts, hospitals, social and government agencies proudly employ CSU Stanislaus graduates. And many of them began their careers as interns.

Prersident ’s Message 2011-12 President’s Message DR. HAMID SHIRVANI University President California State University Stanislaus Welcome to California State University, Stanislaus and Warrior Athletics. I am delighted to welcome you to California State University, Stanislaus and another year of Warrior Athletics. Once again, the success of our student athletes on the field and in the classroom has contributed to the university’s reputation for excellence and its sixth-straight annual recognition in the Princeton Review’s listing of Best Colleges in the United States. CSU Stanislaus is very proud to be the only CSU campus to receive this honor for six consecutive years. In 2010-11, we had the pleasure of hosting three major championships: the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) Division II Outdoor Track and Field National Championships, the CCAA (California Collegiate Athletic Association) soccer championships and the Track & Field conference championships. CSU Stanislaus is truly honored to have hosted these events and welcomed thousands of student-athletes and families from around the country to our campus. Our Warrior Athletics teams and student-athletes continue to rank highly in the state and country. Our women’s soccer team recently participated in the CCAA championship tournament. In addition, two of our student athletes qualified for the NCAA track nationals, and seven were honored as NCAA All Americans. However, Warrior success is not limited to athletics competitions—our student athletes also continue to realize success in their academic pursuits. Thirty-five student athletes had a grade point average (GPA) of 3.4 or higher, one of the strongest academic showings in the CCAA. Thank you again for your interest in Warrior Athletics. I encourage you to visit our beautiful campus and encourage our fine athletes by becoming an enthusiastic fan and supporter of our teams. Go Warriors!

Athletics Administration Gabriel Bolton Interim Director of Athletics

Gabriel Bolton was named Interim Director of Athletics on Nov. 16, 2011 to oversee the daily operations of Warrior Athletics. Gabriel Bolton returned to Cal State Stanislaus as the women’s soccer head coach in 2006 after first serving as the head coach in 2001. He completed his seventh season overall with the program and in 2008 became the Warriors’ winningest coach. Under his guidance, the Warriors captured the program’s first California Collegiate Athletic Association championship in 2011 by defeating Chico State, 4-0, in the title game at Warrior Stadium. Academic Advising & Support Student-Athlete Academic Advising Program The number one goal for the Intercollegiate Athletics program at California State University Stanislaus is that our student-athletes graduate at a higher rate than the general student body. To achieve this goal coaches at Cal State Stanislaus only recruit student-athletes deemed admissible by the Director of Admissions who show promise for academic and athletic achievement. In the fall of 2006, under the direction of Vice President for Student Affairs Stacey Morgan-Foster and Director of Athletics Dr. Milton Richards, an Academic Advisor for student-athletes was recruited and a program to assist student-athletes in obtaining their college degree was established. Under the leadership of the Interim Director of Retention and Advising Fernando Beltran, Academic Advisor Amye Leon provides a comprehensive academic advising program for all student-athletes. Her program includes personal one on one advising, determination and monitoring of student-athlete NCAA and CCAA academic eligibility and most importantly, direct interaction with campus faculty on behalf of coaches, student-athletes and campus staff to assist all student-athletes in their pursuit of a college degree. AMYE LEON Success in the classroom for student-athletes is a top priority for Warrior Athletics. Our department consisAcademic Advisor tently earns a 3.0 cumulative grade point average. Warrior student-athletes also achieve NCAA and CCAA Academic All American Awards, with more than 200 students earning Academic All-CCAA honors since 2006-07 (35 in 2010-11). Student athletes are strongly encouraged to visit both the Athletic Advisor and their chosen major department advisor/faculty each semester before registering for classes. The Advising Resource Center is located in Mary Stuart Rogers (MSR) 180, and appointments can be made by calling (209) 667-3304. Leon Graduated from California State University, Fresno with a B.A. in Psychology in 2001, obtained her M.A. in Educational Counseling and Student Services in 2002, and is currently enrolled as part of the first cohort of the Ed.D. program at CSU Stanislaus.

First-YEAR EXPERIENCE (F.Y.E.) A Special program for first semester freshmen Research shows that students who are part of a learning community and a FYE program do better in their classes, are more active on campus, make friends more easily, and get to know faculty more personally than students who do not join such a program. The FYE program provides these benefits for you. In the First Year Experience Program, you have the opportunity to join a learning community with other new students. The classes in the learning community are integrated around an interesting theme and linked to a seminar that will prepare you to be successful in your classes and will encourage you to get involved on campus. SRC & Athletics Facilities The Student Recreation Complex at California State University Stanislaus opened in August of 2009 prior to the start of the soccer season after students overwhelmingly approved a referendum to fund the construction of a student recreation complex in the spring of 2007. The complex, located on the east side of campus at the corner of Geer Road and Christoffersen Parkway, features a 19,000-square-foot fitness center, a 2,100-seat lighted soccer/football stadium (Warrior Stadium) with a state-of-the-art all-weather turf and track (Al Brenda Track), a lighted intramural competition field and a soccer practice field. A field events site for the relocated track and field program is also included in the project. The Associated Students, Inc., University Student Union Board of Directors and Student Athletic Advisory Committee leadership were involved in the planning for the project. A student oversight committee provided a voice in operation of the facilities. The addition of a lighted intramural field provides CSU Stanislaus with its first dedicated facility for that program. Participation in intramurals has increased dramatically with the University’s steady enrollment growth and

improved student-generated recreation programs. In its first year, Warrior Stadium hosted the California Collegiate Athletic Association Men’s & Women’s Soccer Championships. The facility is schedule to host three major championships in 2010-11: the CCAA Men’s & Women’s Soccer Championships, CCAA Track & Field Championships and the NCAA Division II Track & Field National Championships. During its inaugural soccer season, Warrior Stadium is the site of new attendance records for the Cal State Stanislaus men’s and women’s soccer programs. Both teams set new conference and school records in single-game and single-season attendance figures. The Warriors also led all of NCAA Division II in single-game attendance. The track & field program hosted five meets on the Al Brenda Track, including the first Kim Duyst Invitational and the annual Brenda Athletic Clubs High School Invitational. In the same vicinity on the east side of the campus, the athletic facilities also include a baseball field, two softball fields and six tennis courts.

Welcome! As Mayor of the City of Turlock, it is my distinct honor to welcome you to the campus of California State University Stanislaus for today’s home game. Cal State Stanislaus continues to set the bar for excellence in academics and athletics. For 54 years Warrior Athletics has brought great pride to the City of Turlock, Cal State Stanislaus and the Central Valley. President Shirvani, the Turlock Chamber of Commerce/ Convention and Visitors Bureau, City Council and I have been working hard to enhance the relationship between the City of Turlock and California State University Stanislaus. Warrior Athletics is a key part of our strategy to make Turlock a true college town. As a graduate of Cal State Stanislaus (1981), I thank you on behalf of our student-athletes, coaches, administrative staff, alumni and friends of the University for attending today’s home contest. By purchasing a ticket to a home contest or special event and by joining the Warrior Athletic Club through a tax deductible donation to Warrior Athletics you are helping us provide the necessary additional financial resources to allow our student-athletes to succeed in the class room, court, field, diamond and track. On behalf of our the student-athletes, coaches and staff I want again personally thank you for your support of Cal State Stanislaus.
