Play It Safe Family Safety Day
You may have noticed some changes in Warsaw and Winona Lake. New and improved bicycle and pedestrian facilities are making our community a safer place to bike and walk. In 2012, bike lanes were installed on Smith Street and shared lane markings were added to Winona Avenue, thanks to support from the K21 Health Foundation. A new trailhead park is also being developed, and several projects are being planned for the next few years. A Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan has also been completed to guide future improvements. The plan is available on the city’s website (www.warsaw.in.gov). For more information on the Ride+Walk Warsaw+Winona Lake initiative, contact Staci Young at (574) 372-9554 ext. 224 or syoung@warsaw.in.gov. You can also check out the Facebook page for regular updates at www.facebook.com/RWWWL. Please remember a few safety tips when you hit the streets and sidewalks... Bike Right • Always ride on the right side with the flow of traffic. • Wear the right safety gear, including a helmet. • Obey traffic laws as if you were a motor vehicle (don’t forget to signal!) • Wear high-visibility clothing. • Share the right-of-way with others. Walk Left • Use sidewalks where provided. • Walk facing traffic. • Cross at corners using crosswalks. • Wear high-visibility clothing. • Pay attention to motorists.
