FORCED ENTERTAINMENT
The Notebook Tue 8 & Wed 9 Mar 7.30pm Set during WW2, The Notebook tells the story of a pair of twin brothers evacuated to their impoverished grandmother’s farm to shelter from the conkict. These unnamed children survive and understand the world by a harsh private code, as they try to live by consistent principles in a Central Europe crumbling into cruelty and opportunism. Kristof’s bold and crisp narrational language provides the basis for a compelling performance as two performers stand side by side in an unsettling and uncanny double act. “THIS IS THE FIRST TIME IN ITS HISTORY THAT FORCED ENTERTAINMENT HAS ADAPTED A NOVEL FOR THE STAGE – AND THE RESULTS ARE BOTH RELENTLESS AND HYPNOTIC.” The Stage 2hrs 10mins / Age 17+ (Contains explicit sexual references) Theatre £15 (£13) Under 26s £10 T. 1/125 of a Second Renowned for his jlm installations which re-enact conversations from specijc historic moments, Irish artist Gerard Byrne works with photography, video and live art to explore the way we understand the present, through revisiting the past.
Artist’s Talk: An Introduction by Gerard Byrne
Creative Week in the Mead Gallery
Fri 15 Jan 6 – 7pm
The Mead Gallery has worked with galleries in Melbourne and Stockholm to develop this major exhibition of Gerard Byrne’s work. It centres on the worldpremiere of a new jlm by the artist made at the Biologiska Museet in Stockholm: the jrst natural history museum to use a large-scale diorama.
In 2007 Gerard Byrne represented Ireland at the 52nd Venice Biennale and has since participated in many major exhibitions across the world. This is a rare opportunity to hear Gerard Byrne introduce his new work and discuss it in relation to his wider practice. Helen Martin Studio £6 (£4.50)
In response to Gerard Byrne’s new exhibition, Coventry artist Jo Gane will curate the activities area in the Mead Gallery. This space will provide information about the history of photography and photographic processes. Alongside Birmingham artists Pete Ashton and Jenny Dufjn, Jo will also be leading workshops and demonstrations of pinhole photography and camera obscura. For details, go to meadgallery.co.uk Mead Gallery FREE
The 19th century diorama is a form of representation that anticipates the invention of both photography and cinema. Gerard Byrne explores this immersive representation of a Nordic wilderness as an image that is jxed both in the time of its making and of the present. His jlm stages a confrontation between the photographic image and the forms of representation that it supplanted and raises questions as to what comes next. With some artists, the name is enough. For more than four decades Dame Mitsuko Uchida has been a byword for everything that’s freshest, most thoughtful and most natural about great piano playing. “No pianist today plays Mozart better than Mitsuko Uchida” says The Washington Post. “Her probing intelligence, abundant skill and spontaneous joy are perfectly suited to his music. She knds imaginative ways to bring out the drama, lyricism and wit in every phrasew” But Dame Mitsuko doesn’t only play Mozart, and even though his Rondo K.511 is at the heart of her programme, this recital jnds her exploring the length and breadth of German romanticism. Mitsuko Uchida has devoted a lifetime to this music: there’s no more joyful – or illuminating – guide to these four utterly distinctive masterpieces. NB This is a change of date to the previously published programme.

There are child prodigies – and then there was Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. We all know the story, but still, just wait until you hear this rare performance of his Piano Concerto No.2: an exuberant, sparkling mini-masterpiece, brimming with grace and wit, and composed by a boy of 11. Freddy Kempf gives it the deluxe treatment, and then jumps forward to the magnijcent concerto with which Mozart astonished Viennese audiences in 1783. European Union Chamber Orchestra plays with the panache of a virtuoso soloist and the commitment of a top string quartet. Those qualities will come wonderfully to the fore in Haydn’s stormy early symphony, and the mockbaroque fun of Grieg’s playful Holberg Suite. Amadeus would have approved! Serenade for Strings Violin Concerto Symphony No.4

From the moment that its opening fanfares shatter the silence, you can tell that Tchaikovsky’s Fourth Symphony means business. Convinced that Fate itself was out to destroy him, Tchaikovsky poured everything into this shattering symphony: a no-holds-barred emotional autobiography, told in music of uncompromising rawness and drama. Now imagine it conducted by a living legend, one of the world’s most admired violinists, conductors and all round musicians – an artist who’s been described as “a phenomenon in the world of music for over four decades”. Pinchas Zukerman is quite simply one of the all-time greats and the RPO’s Principal Guest Conductor, so imagine the poetry and passion he’ll bring to Tchaikovsky’s music, to say nothing of Elgar’s lovely Serenade.
“Free but happy” is the motto that Brahms gave to his Third Symphony, and it begins with all the exhilaration of a summer downpour. What comes next is one of the loveliest journeys in Romantic music, a world of rolling clouds, tender lullabies, and – at the end – a radiant sunset. It’s a truly beautiful way to end a concert that‘s all about colour, played by one of Belgium’s most highly-regarded ensembles. “This is wonderful playing” declared Gramophone of the Flanders Symphony Orchestra, and this programme should let them demonstrate every aspect of their musicianship, from the devilish wit of Mozart’s Don Giovanni overture to the shadowy mysteries of Charles Ives’s The Unanswered Question. And at the heart of it all, there’s love - Chopin’s unashamedly romantic First Piano Concerto, performed by “one of the most outstanding modern Chopin players” (International Record Review), Nikolai Demidenko. Expect him to drench it in glittering sound.
And as if that wasn’t enough, he’s playing too: arguably the very greatest of classical violin concertos. “His sound is utterly inimitable” declared one critic, “the molten gold that streams from the instrument is completely breathtaking.” In other words: book early! JEWISH MUSIC INSTITUTE
Drawing Life Thu 28 Jan 7.30pm Composer Director
Jocelyn Pook Emma Bernard
Drawing Life features poems and drawings by Jewish children imprisoned in Terezin, a walled 18th Century garrison town in former Czechoslovakia used as a concentration camp for more than 150,000 Jews. Between 1941 and 1944, of the 15,000 children deported there and then to Auschwitz, only 100 survived. The children’s poems and drawings, stuffed into walls or buried outside, are a moving testament to the prisoners resilience. Drawing inspiration from the children’s creative spirit, Jocelyn Pook has created a dramatised song cycle with jlm and video, based on the book I Never Saw Another Butterly. The commission marks the 70th anniversary of the start of the disintegration of the Terezin concentration camp in 1944 and the thirtieth year of the Jewish Music Institute. Quartet in F Op.74 No.2 Quintet in C Op.29 Quartet in D minor Op.56 Voces Intimae
In the forests of the north, something stirs. Light jlters through leaves, shadows kicker; someone whispers a secret – and the only way to learn it is through Sibelius’s extraordinary, elemental D minor string quartet. The Coull have paired Sibelius with the ultimate in urban sophistication – a brilliantly witty quartet that Haydn wrote specially to entertain British audiences – and invited a friend to join them for Beethoven’s only string quintet. Deep calm gives way to a truly operatic storm, but Beethoven’s only joking… isn’t he? Sibelius isn’t the only one sharing a secret tonight… Helen Martin Studio £19 (£17)
Quartet in C Op.74 No.1 Quartet No.3 in E kat Op.14 Quartet in D minor Op.34
If you’ve been to Scandinavia, you’ll have felt it – the tingle in the air and the luminous glow of a long summer evening or a brief winter afternoon. In his exuberant Second Quartet, Carl Nielsen practically bottles that energy: chamber music simply doesn’t get any fresher or more vibrant. It’s the perfect musical partner for the sunshine and wit of Haydn’s exuberant, folk-kavoured Op.74 No.1, and a life-afjrming upbeat to Dvorak’s poignant Quartet Op.34. Personal sorrow, classical poise and playful Czech polkas all come together in a mini-masterpiece with a big, big heart. Helen Martin Studio £19 (£17)
