HELLO September and October bring in a rich harvest of wise comedies, modern biographies and inspired adaptations which focus on some of the leading writers of the day. Thanks for Sharing takes the edgy subject of addiction and finds a humour and humanity amid the damage, in the first film directed by Stuart Blumberg, writer of The Kids Are All Right, another thoughtful wry drama. Woody Allen is back with his 43rd(!) feature, Blue Jasmine and gives Cate Blanchett and Stephen Baldwin room to deliver elegant, shaded performances. Richard Curtis returns to familiar romcom territory with a tale of time travel and misunderstanding in About Time whilst obsession with Pride and Prejudice drives the hapless Jane Hayes to the Austenland theme house in search of her own Mr Darcy. What Maisie Knew is, in spite of its comedy credentials (including an illuminating performance from Steve Coogan) quite a serious updating of Henry James’ novel of a child in a disintegrating family.

What Maisie Knew 15

Modern icons presented to us include those of Julian Assange, pioneer of WikiLeaks and the world’s greatest data leak in The Fifth Estate, with Benedict Cumberbatch and Daniel Brühl. Brühl also appears as Niki Lauder, embroiled in ruthless competition with James Hunt in the Peter Morgan scripted F1 drama, Rush. Stephen Jeffreys, whose portrayal of the poet John Wilmot, Earl of Rochester in The Libertine was suitably stark and truthful, shapes the story of Diana.

Fri 6 – Thu 12 Sep Dir: Scott McGehee, David Siegel US 2012 99mins Cast: Julianne Moore, Steve Coogan, Alexander Skarsgård

As well as all of that, classic reissues, Saturday Film Talks, the Off Screen Film Course and post-screening discussions all resume this Autumn.

As her parents attempt to restructure their new lives in the wake of divorce, new partners appear, in the shape of Maisie’s former nanny Margot and her mother’s new lover Lincoln (Skarsgård). Maisie’s relationships with the four adults in her life becomes more confused as new roles and responsibilities develop for each of them. An intriguing drama that gets to the heart of how adult issues impact on a child’s world.

Avoiding the usual outlaw movie clichés, the film focuses on the atmospheric Texan landscape and the tensions that come from the anxiety of waiting. “DAVID LOWERY’S TRIUMPHANT TALE OF ESTRANGED LOVE IS DEFTLY PACED, STUNNINGLY SHOT AND BENEFITS FROM SOME SUPERB PERFORMANCES.”  The Guardian 06
