WELCOME Sequels tend to be dull repetitions of previous versions and comebacks are seldom well-advised, but this season we have a bunch of excellent examples to buck the trend. Al Gore last appeared on our screens ten years ago with Oscar-winner, An Inconvenient Truth. Now, he returns with An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power, intended to bring a message of hope until political changes intervened and the film required re-editing. Still, he is a persuasive advocate for environmental action. Steven Soderbergh retired after Side Effects to concentrate on his work for TV, but now returns in splendid form with Logan Lucky, a tale of robbery and conspiracy that allows his all-star cast free rein to have a great time. In contrast, Kathryn Bigelow returns with another piercing exploration of American history in Detroit, examining the origins of the infamous civil disturbance in 1967. Elsewhere, Dame Judy Dench returns to her role as Queen Victoria in Victoria and Abdul, reuniting with her Philomena director Stephen Frears for an account of an unexpected friendship formed in the monarch’s later years. The outstanding sequel of the autumn is the highly anticipated Bladerunner 2049. 30 years on from the original, the world is no less troubled leading new replicant-hunter, K (Gosling), to go in search of his predecessor, Decker (Ford) for answers. It looks as stunning and innovative as the original and, in the hands of Dennis Villeneuve (Arrival), promises to deliver a new dystopia. Insyriated, on the other hand, explores the all too real and immediate dystopia that is Syria in wartime. This is not comfortable viewing but brings the headlines vividly to life with a stunning and powerful central performance by Hiam Abass. In total contrast, Loving Vincent harks back to a gentler time, exploring the life, death and the myth of Vincent van Gogh through animated images of paintings and actors in a way that is truly innovative. With even more to see, including Goodbye Christopher Robin, Jo Nesbo’s The Snowman and Luis Buñuel at his most controversial, there is nothing dull or repetitious here!
