IN CASE I DON’T SEE YOU GOOD AFTERNOON, GOOD EVENING, AND GOODNIGHT * As the Film Programme draws to a close, I have tried to cover as many titles as possible that will not be found in multiplexes and to celebrate some of the finest moments in our history. Emma Thompson delivers another riveting performance in Richard Eyre’s adaptation of Ian McEwan’s The Children Act, exploring the rights of children versus the wishes of their parents. A very timely drama. Similarly of the moment is The Miseducation of Cameron Post, one of the highlights of the Sundance Festival this year, exploring the process and impact of reprogramming on young people who identify as gay in conservative America. In a time before Woody Allen and Ingmar Bergman was Anton Chekhov, and the latest adaptation of The Seagull is graced with fine performances by Elisabeth Moss, Saoirse Ronan and Annette Bening. From across Europe comes C’est la Vie! (Le Sens de la Fête), a delirious comedy about planning the wedding of the year from the makers of Untouchable, with which it shares its irreverent humour and depiction of a more diverse France. Then there’s L’Apparition, which is a compelling tale of a war journalist commissioned to research the supposed miracles of a young woman proposed for canonisation, and The Guardians, set on a farm behind the Western Front in 1915, with more than a nod in the direction of Thomas Hardy. At the end of the programme comes Cold War by Paweł Pawlikowski, Oscarwinning director of Ida and winner of the Palme d’Or at Cannes this year for this stylish, witty and affecting film. As I was assembling the programme, I was approached by the projectionists and asked if they could select their favourite titles to commemorate our temporary closure. They have suffered my programming choices for years, so it seems only fair that they should have their say. What a shrewd move! There are a cluster of the very finest films here: Gus Van Sant’s heartbreaking My Own Private Idaho, the lush and satirical reflection on the 1980s, Peter Greenaway’s The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover, Guillermo del Toro’s dazzling Civil War fantasy/nightmare, Pan’s Labyrinth, the evergreen, joyous and brilliantly clever Singin’ in the Rain and we close, inevitably, with a paean to cinema and its culture, Cinema Paradiso. It has been an honour and a pleasure to share movies and events with you over nearly 40 years. Thank you for your loyalty and support. I shall miss you. Goodbye,

His latest - and final - gig is a luxury wedding in a 17th century castle, featuring period costumes, a hyper-sensitive singer and a morose, micromanaging groom. As the celebration spins further and further out of control, Max just needs to make it through the night. “THIS IS AN EXPERTLY ASSEMBLED, TARTLY PLAYED AND HUGELY ENJOYABLE ROMP”

While everyone is passionately caught up loving someone who loves someone else, a tragicomedy about art, fame, human folly, and the eternal desire to live a purposeful life unfolds. “BENING AND RONAN ARE EXCELLENT…BOTH ARE SKILLED IN BALANCING THE COMEDIC WITH THE DRAMATIC, EARNING LAUGHS AND GASPS IN EQUAL MEASURE.” Indiewire

PROJECTIONIST’S CHOICE

Singin’ in the Rain U Sat 15 Sep Dir: Stanley Donen, Gene Kelly USA 1952 103min Cast: Gene Kelly, Donald O’Connor, Debbie Reynolds Things are not looking good for 1920s film star Don Lockwood (Kelly): an intolerable co-star, an uninspiring repertoire, and a challenging transition from silent films to ‘talkies’ all conspire to make his life miserable. But the humour of his longtime collaborator Cosmo (O’Connor) and a fortuitous meeting with a spirited showgirl (Reynolds) will turn his fortunes around. Filled with unforgettable numbers such as Make ‘Em Laugh, Good Morning, and of course the titular Singin’ in the Rain, this fabulous musical classic never loses its charm.

The Guardians 15 (Les Gardiennes) Wed 19 & Thu 20 Sep Dir: Xavier Beauvois France/Switzerland 2017 135mins French with subtitles Cast: Nathalie Baye, Laura Smet, Iris Bry The First World War is raging, but parts of the French countryside remain unspoiled and fertile, kept alive by the women left behind while their husbands, brothers, and sons are fighting for their country. Faced with difficult decisions, Hortense (Baye), the family’s matriarch, reluctantly brings in teenage orphan Francine (Bry) to help her daughter Solange (Smet) and, despite being from different worlds, they triumph over the land, acquiring a newfound independence. The Guardians is an affecting drama of love, loss and resilience, played out against the upheaval of The Great War.

Hurricane 15 Fri 21 & Sat 22 Sep Dir: David Blair UK/Poland 2018 115mins Cast: Iwan Rheon, Milo Gibson, Stefanie Martini Hurricane tells the fascinating true story of Squadron 303, a group of Polish pilots who joined the RAF to take a last stand against the Luftwaffe during World War Two. The film follows no-nonsense, ace pilot Jan Zumbach (Rheon) as he leads a group of Poles equipped with the almost-obsolete Hurricane and (despite some initial reluctance) RAF uniforms. Together, they risk their lives to defend Britain from invasion, and to keep the dream of a free Poland alive. Brought to life using one of the last operating Hurricanes in existence, this powerful and gripping story is a must-see.

(Zimna wojna)

(Nuovo Cinema Paradiso)

Fri 21 - Sun 23 Sep Dir: Paweł Pawlikowski Poland/France/UK 2018 88mins Polish with subtitles Cast: Joanna Kulig, Tomasz Kot, Borys Szyc

Sun 23 Sep Dir: Giuseppe Tornatore Italy/France 1988 142mins Italian with subtitles Cast: Salvatore Cascio, Philippe Noiret, Jacques Perrin

Following his Oscar-winning film Ida, Paweł Pawlikowski returns with a stunning and sweeping epic, set against the backdrop of post-war Europe. When Zula (Kulig), a young singer from a provincial background who forces her way into a communist folk troupe assembled for propaganda purposes in 1940s Poland, meets Wiktor (Kot), a talented composer who dreams of artistic freedom, the pair fall deeply in love. Sumptuously shot in black and white, Cold War spans decades and nations to tell a love story that is as tragic as it is moving, and as transportive as it is honest.

Salvatore Di Vita (Perrin), a successful but jaded film director, recalls his childhood in Sicily where, as a six-year-old filmlover, he spent every free moment at the local movie house, Cinema Paradiso. There, he developed a friendship with the fatherly projectionist, Alfredo (Noiret), who let him watch films from the projection booth and taught him to love the magic of movies. When an accident left Alfredo blind, Salvatore was hired to show the films, which were censored by the local priest to remove any romantic moments.

“BITTERSWEET AND UNBEARABLY LOVELY.”

Hollywood Reporter

Winner of the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film in 1990, this is truly the film-lover’s film and, we hope, a fitting send off for our beloved cinema, for now. “TRANSCENDING BOUNDARIES OF ARTHOUSE AND SUBTITLE, CINEMA PARADISO WRAPS YOU IN A TENDER EMBRACE AND REFUSES TO LET GO.”      Empire 09

Warwick Arts Centre 20:20 is a 3 year project to refresh, renew and redevelop our building to create modern, updated, larger spaces where we can continue our distinctive, creative, artistic and cultural programme. As we embark on Stage 2 of the project this autumn, our cinema will be closing for two years in order to commence the new build. We will be building three new cinemas, moving the Mead Gallery to the ground floor; and creating a spacious new-look foyer and restaurant, offering a more welcoming and comfortable environment for our visitors. Warwick Arts Centre will be open throughout – please follow updates on our website regarding digital screenings, outdoor exhibitions and other events happening during the project. We apologise for this disruption – but please bear with us because on re-opening in Autumn 2020 our building and facilities will be fit for the 21st century. Warwick Arts Centre will be fully accessible, environmentally sustainable and a centre for world class cinema, live event transmission, contemporary exhibitions, live performances and much more. We look forward to welcoming you.
