2023 - 2024 Orchestral Series

Expect plenty of genuine surprises for our 2023-2024 Orchestral Season, as our programme boasts truly iconic works alongside lesser-known masterpieces, and all performed by some of the most accomplished musicians in the world.

We begin with the pioneering Chineke! Orchestra, presenting a programme of French classics that take us back to a time of radical societal change. And at the centre (of both their concert and the period) is the remarkable Joseph Bologne (aka Le Chevalier de SaintGeorges). A true polymath, he’s the very definition of ‘young, gifted and Black.’ No wonder Hollywood’s jumped onto his remarkable story, retelling it as biopic Chevalier.

In another cinematic link, hearing John William’s iconic Imperial March from Star Wars performed by the Symphony Orchestra of India, conducted by Richard Farnes, will undoubtedly delight film buffs. Hearing the brooding march in a cinema is one thing – but performed by a full orchestra is genuinely something else. A ‘force’ to be reckoned with ... Over the coming months, we also welcome back Miloš Karadaglić, who has done so much for the classical guitar, and who can’t wait to see Sir Mark Elder and Sir Stephen Hough reunited? With Sir Mark’s The Hallé tenure coming to a close after a quarter of a century, it’s a concert that draws our season to a climatic close.

But it’s not just about those established giants, as other season highlights include the National Youth Orchestra, who represent the next generation, consistently amazing audiences with their spirited and masterful performances - another chance to see Sir Mark Elder in work as the NYO have secured his services to conduct, and rising star (and Royal Philharmonic Orchestra Artist-in-Residence) Zlatomir Fung

Instrumental Experiences to Inspire Young People

Warwick Arts Centre is committed to providing access to its programme of world-class classical music.

We aim to inspire the young audiences of today and encourage them to become the adult audiences of tomorrow. Our Instrumental programme offers free tickets to young people via their School, Home Education Facilitator or Youth Groups to open their ears and eyes to classical music by experiencing some of the best live performers in the world.

In addition, and in partnership with Coventry Music Service, we are excited to be able to offer FREE workshops to Coventry state schools on the solo instrument from a selection of our concerts in the 23/24 Series. A professional music facilitator and instruments are provided for up to 25 students at KS2/3 and no prior experience is necessary.

Getting Here

By car:

Approaching Coventry, follow the brown signs for Warwick Arts Centre. Once at the University of Warwick, please come on to campus via the entrance adjacent to Scarman Road/Varsity pub at the bottom of Gibbet Hill. If you’d like to pay for parking you can do so at one of the two machines in our foyer.

By bus: Regular bus services from Coventry, Leamington Spa and Kenilworth stop outside the Arts Centre. Travel Line: 0871 200 2233.

By train:

Services run regularly from Birmingham, Leicester, and London to Coventry. Coventry station is just a short taxi or bus ride away.

By bike:

There are a number of cycle stands outside Warwick Arts Centre. Please do not attach your bicycles to the railings around the building.

Car parking:

We have many car parks on central campus, close to Warwick Arts Centre. Go to our website for what3words addresses and links to Google Maps.

Although it is not essential, you are advised to book in advance so that we can readily provide assistance. If you require assistance, disabled patrons may also bring a companion FREE of charge.

Warwick Arts Centre is pleased to have a Changing Place facility located on the ground floor of our building. Please head to our website (warwickartscentre.co.uk/ accessible-building/) for further details or ask for information from our Box Office.

Parking spaces for Blue Badge holders are available in car park 8, on Health Centre Road and behind Senate House, which is located next to Warwick Arts Centre. On Concert evening, Parking Stewards will be positioned at key points to assist you. Wheelchair access at ground level to Butterworth Hall, Studio, Arts Centre Café, Woods-Scawen Room, Box Office and Helen Martin Studio.

There is a stair lift to the Theatre and Theatre Bar – if required please ask for assistance from our Front of House team.

Assistance dogs are welcomed and can be cared for during performances by prior arrangement.

Receivers for our Sennheiser infra-red facility are freely available from Box Office.

Toilet facilities accessible on the ground floor.

Chineke! Orchestra

Chineke! travels through pre-and post-revolutionary Paris, where musical and political ambitions collide.

Grandiose and fizzling with wit, Haydn’s fourth Paris Symphony was commissioned by the dazzling violinist/ composer Bologne, who supported the Revolution’s ethos of social reform.

The evening concludes with Beethoven’s epic Eroicaa work that transformed the classical symphony.

India’s only professional orchestra makes its Warwick Arts Centre debut.

A stirring programme features William’s iconic Star Wars Imperial March, Brahms expressive second piano concerto, and Wagner’s Parsifal Suite - a piece which harks back to conductor Farnes’ time at Opera North, where he developed a close affinity with Wagner.

Expect big emotions and great melodies with RPO

Artist-In-Residence Zlatomir Fung and trailblazing South Korean conductor, Shiyeon Sung.

There’s grand emotions and sweeping drama with Dvořák’s Symphony No.9, plus Beethoven’s soul-stirring and courageous Leonore No.3, while Haydn’s Cello Concerto, like a perfectly-cut jewel, highlights the stunning talents of lauded cellist Fung.

Miloš sealed his reputation with 2011’s stunning The Guitar. Performing works by Vivaldi, Bach and more, he continues to expand the classical guitar’s repertoire to great acclaim.

As Sir Mark Elder’s lauded tenure as The Hallé’s Music Director reaches its grand finale, our programme acknowledges a core Hallé tradition of English music with Butterworth’s orchestral rhapsody A Shropshire Lad, and Elgar’s affectionate Enigma Variations, while pianist Sir Stephen Hough performs Brahms’ monumental First Piano Concerto.
