hello In the spirit of Amazon recommendation (but hopefully with rather greater accuracy), I have ‘If you liked this, try these’ suggestions. Potiche has proved to be one of the heartwarming hits of the summer, so there will be another chance to see it at the start of September, and if you liked Potiche try The Hedgehog, a quirky Amelie meets Harold and Maud for our times. If you liked Mid August Lunch, well, Mama’s boy, Gianni returns with his elderly coterie of ladies in The Salt of Life. If you liked Man on Wire, then the production team has just realised another extraordinary documentary, Project Nim, about a group of academics who taught a chimpanzee sign language. If you like inspired and provocative cinema from leading European directors, the eccentric world of Pedro Almodóvar presents The Skin I Live In, which sees the director reunited with leading actor, Antonio Banderas and Lars Von Trier, as ever, surfing the waves of controversy to present his finest film to date, Melancholia, with an outstanding performance by Kirsten Dunst. Woody Allen is rapidly becoming adopted as a European, as is illustrated by his latest movie Midnight in Paris.
Kind Hearts and Coronets U Tue 30 Aug – Thu 1 Sep Dir: Robert Hamer UK 1949 106mins Cast: Dennis Price, Joan Greenwood, Alec Guinness A coolly elegant, critically acclaimed comic masterpiece, Kind Hearts and Coronets is a classic black comedy from Ealing Studios. Louis Mazzini’s mother belongs to the aristocratic family D’Ascoyne, but she ran away with an opera singer. Therefore, the D’Ascoynes rejected her and Louis. Once an adult, Louis decides to avenge his mother and himself by becoming the next Duke of the family. Murdering every potential successor – all famously played by Alec Guinness – is clearly the safest way to achieve his goal. Regarded by many as Ealing’s greatest film, Kind Hearts and Coronets was voted the 7th best British film ever made by Total Film magazine.
Danish director Nicolas Winding Refn goes across the Atlantic to make Drive with the ubiquitous Ryan Gosling. Cary Fukunaga crosses the pond in the opposite direction to direct ‘Alice’ Mia Wasikowska in a new realisation of Jane Eyre, with Michael Fassbender as an impressively glowering Rochester and Judi Dench as Mrs Fairfax. A very starry cast has been assembled for the review of the cold war classic Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy and Kevin Smith sheds his eternal slacker persona to deliver a thrilling and incisive depiction of the American religious right in Red State. Enjoy.

Fri 2 – Tue 6 Sep Dir: Chris Weitz, US 2011 98mins Cast: Demián Bichir, José Julián, Eddie ‘Piolin’ Sotelo
This comedy thriller, set on the west coast of Ireland, stars Brendan Gleeson as Sergeant Gerry Boyle, a small town cop with a confrontational personality, a subversive sense of humour, a dying mother, a fondness for prostitutes and absolutely no interest whatsoever in the international cocaine smuggling ring that has brought FBI agent Wendell Everett to his door. Despite the fact that Boyle seems more interested in mocking and undermining Everett than in actively working to solve the case, Boyle finds that circumstances keep pulling him back into the thick of it. These events unwittingly offend Boyle’s murky moral code. He realises that he needs to take matters into his own hands and the only person he can trust is Everett. And so the scene is set for an explosive finale.

Potiche (Trophy Wife)
Director Chris Weitz (About a Boy) takes on this powerful story of a Mexican gardener living in L.A. and trying to raise his son, keeping him away from the dangers of street gangs. Beautifully acted and skilfully directed, this is a moving portrait of both the difficulties immigrants face in America and the relationships between fathers and sons.
“a little gem where humanity is observed with compassion, not condescension.” The Hollywood Reporter
Potiche (Trophy Wife) 15 Fri 2 – Sun 4 Sep Dir: François Ozon, France 2010 103mins subtitled Cast: Catherine Deneuve, Gerard Depardieu, Fabrice Luchini The hit film of the summer is back by popular demand. It’s 1977 and women’s liberation is in the air but Suzanne (Deneuve) is still the self-effacing, elegant housewife of wealthy industrialist Robert Pujol (Luchini). Pujol oversees his umbrella factory with an iron fist and is equally tyrannical with his children and ‘trophy housewife’. When the workers go on strike and take Robert hostage, Suzanne steps in to manage the factory. To everyone’s surprise she proves herself a competent and assertive woman of action. Her new role throws her back in touch with union leader Gerard Depardieu, a romantic fling from the past that still has sparks. When Robert returns from a restful cruise looking to reassert himself things get complicated.
“With a frothy, sophisticated, quick-witted script, Mr. Ozon’s film follows in the tradition of the American screwball comedies of the 1940s. And the transformation of Suzanne… is a joy to behold in one of the most finely tuned, raciest and most gripping performances of Ms. Deneuve’s career.” The New York Times 3

Beautifully shot and featuring some genuinely astonishing footage, this is a thoroughly entertaining documentary that delivers a powerful message. One Life shows the bonds that connect all living creatures through a series of imaginative and vividly captured stories, created from 10,000 hours of footage of incredible, intimate creatures that are in turn heroic, strange, loveable, beautiful and surprisingly funny. Voiced by Daniel Craig and directed by Michael Gunton and Martha Holmes from the BBC Natural History Unit, One Life is a joyous celebration of the most brilliant and imaginative stories of survival from the natural world.
Elles s’appellait Sarah
Based on Tatiana de Rosnay’s best-selling novel, Sarah’s Key tells the story of an American journalist (Scott Thomas) on the brink of making big life decisions regarding her marriage and her unborn child. What starts off as research for an article about the Vel’d’Hiv Roundup in 1942 in France ends up as a journey towards self-discovery. She stumbles upon a terrible secret and discovers the heartbreaking story of a Jewish family forced out of their home, a home that is now her own. Tour de force performances from Kristin Scott Thomas and Mélusine Mayance anchor this remarkable film which critics are comparing to Sophie’s Choice.

In a bold new feature version of Jane Eyre, director Cary Joji Fukunaga (Sin Nombre) and screenwriter Moira Buffini (Tamara Drewe) breathe new life into Charlotte Brontë’s timeless, classic story. Mia Wasikowska (Alice in Wonderland) and Michael Fassbender (Inglourious Basterds) star in the iconic lead roles of the romantic drama, the heroine of which continues to inspire new generations of devoted readers and viewers.

Michael Parks is mesmeric in this total departure for Kevin Smith (Dogma, Chasing Amy), moving away from comedy and arriving at a far more serious subject matter. A horror opening has three teenagers kidnapped by the far right Five Ways Church (dead ringers for the Wesboro Baptist Church) with Michael Parks as their charismatic leader. Then the second half of the film becomes an action thriller with guns and explosions aplenty. Smith’s trademark flair for dialogue is still present in this departure and his directorial skill has never been more apparent.

Kirsten Dunst picked up the best actress award at Cannes for her portrayal of a troubled woman with Charlotte Gainsborough as her long suffering sister in the last days of the earth. The often controversial Von Trier takes the B movie premise of a planet called Melancholia about to crash into the earth and makes a beautiful film from it. Accompanied largely by music from Wagner’s Tristan and Isolde, the film is visually gorgeous.

Butterfield 8 15
A chance to spend the day exploring a particular theme of film guided by specialists in that field.
Dir: Daniel Mann US 1960 109mins Cast: Elizabeth Taylor, Laurence Harvey, Eddie Fisher
Elizabeth Taylor
A woman who has long been short on feelings falls in love with a married man in this emotional drama.
Sat 8 Oct 11am – 3.30pm £10 (£6.50) Few screen idols have equalled the brilliance and impact of Elizabeth Taylor. She became the byword for glamour in the ‘50s and ‘60s. She was never out of the headlines for her several marriages and tempestuous relationship with Richard Burton. A precursor to contemporary celebrities, Oscar winner, fashion icon and latterly social campaigner, she was the embodiment of the ‘Star’. This Close Up Film Talk looks at the life, career and legacy of one of the last screen icons. There will be a complete screening of one of her greatest movies, Butterfield 8, which earned her an Oscar in 1961.
Based on the novel by John O’Hara, Butterfield 8 earned Elizabeth Taylor her first Academy Award for Best Actress.
Julia is a Film Studies teacher who has been leading the postscreening discussions (in the frame) at Warwick Arts Centre for two years and invites you to come and have a chat about the film you have just watched. Everyone is welcome to talk about whatever issues the film has raised.

Kes PG Sat 15 Oct 1.30pm Cinema £4.50 (£2.50) Dir: Ken Loach UK 1969 110mins Cast: David Bradley, Brian Glover, Freddie Fletcher Introduce the young people in your life to Ken Loach’s classic on the big screen as it should be seen. Billy (Bradley) is an awkward teenager with a miserable home life and a school life that’s equally bad. This all changes when he finds a baby kestrel which he names Kes. It becomes the focus of his life, an all consuming relationship as he finally finds a vocation. Then tragedy strikes.

Strictly Ballroom PG Sat 29 Oct 1.30pm Cinema £4.50 (£2.50) Dir: Baz Luhrman Australia 1992 94mins Cast: Paul Mercurio, Tara Morice, Bill Hunter The flamboyant Baz Luhrman (Moulin Rouge!, Romeo + Juliet) takes on ballroom dance in this wildly offbeat comedy. Scott is a champion calibre dancer who dreams of winning the Australian title, but he is shunned by the ballroom world for his insistence on dancing new steps. When his long term partner leaves him, tired of his obsession, he meets the shy Fran who has two left feet but longs to learn how to dance. So they pair up in an attempt to take the ballroom world by force. A simple story told well makes this uplifting film perfect for a fun family afternoon out.
