This visually stunning journey takes in a ballet of disembodied heads, a story told entirely by pictures emerging from a briefcase and a tiny Moses with a cardboard head full of lonely wisdom. Told with beautiful puppets and Blind Summit’s trademark performing style, this story combines dark humour and flat-pack technology. No man is an island… but sometimes a puppet can be a table.

In 2002 John Osborne won a competition on John Peel’s Radio One show. His prize was a box of records that took eight years to listen to. This five-star, sell-out smash theatre hit of the Edinburgh Festival is an ode to radio, those records and anyone who’s ever sought solace in wireless. Featuring records previously owned by the late John Peel and partly adapted from his acclaimed book Radio Head (Radio 4’s Book of the Week) with a script edited by Joe Dunthorne (Submarine).

One World Week Fri 20 – Sat 28 Jan One World Week at the University of Warwick is the world’s largest student-run international event and one of the most exciting weeks on campus. Taking place every January, One World Week is a celebration of the cultures and diversity represented at Warwick and features a huge range of events. This year, Warwick Arts Centre will again be hosting two of the week’s most spectacular events: the Fashion Show in the Butterworth Hall (Sat 21 Jan) and the World Music Concert in the Theatre (Sun 22 Jan). The Fashion Show features models from the numerous societies at Warwick in addition to dazzling performances by the One World Week Models. The World Music Concert showcases the best musical talent at the University together with professional acts from around the world.

Hardcastle, a man of substance, looks forward to acquainting his daughter with his old pal’s son with a view to marriage. But thanks to playboy Lumpkin, he’s mistaken by his prospective sonin-law Marlow for an innkeeper, his daughter for the local barmaid. The good news is while Marlow can barely speak to a woman of quality, he’s a charmer with those of a different stamp. And so, as Hardcastle’s indignation intensifies, Miss Hardcastle’s appreciation for her misguided suitor soars. Misdemeanours multiply, love blossoms, mayhem ensues. One of the great, generous-hearted and ingenious comedies of the English language, Goldsmith’s She Stoops To Conquer offers a celebration of chaos, courtship and the dysfunctional family.

International Dance Festival Birmingham 2012 presents Dave St-Pierre Company

We all, at one time or another, need tenderness. Un peu de tendresse bordel de merde! (A little tenderness for crying out loud!) explores the moment of wandering between two love relationships; the different forms of tenderness shared with a dying person, a child, a former lover, a father; the intense request to receive or give tenderness, or to give it when the other refuses. “St-Pierre is a provocateur, but what gives his productions integrity is their underlying sincerity: they demonstrate both the ugliness and the beauty of our basic instincts.” Toronto Life Using humour to tackle taboo subjects the show features 20 dancers, naked both literally and figuratively. As the performers leap with primal urgency, or lie crumpled and defeated on the ground, a narrator leads the audience on a journey through their emotions towards a breathtakingly beautiful and moving finale. Branded the ‘enfant terrible’ of his generation, award-winning Canadian choreographer Dave St-Pierre has been a major force on the contemporary dance scene for over five years and has provoked comparisons with Pina Bausch’s theatre of cruelty. International Dance Festival Birmingham (IDFB) takes place in venues and outdoor spaces across Birmingham and the West Midlands from 23 April – 19 May 2012. Harold Budd, Simon Fisher Turner and Daniel Biro Sun 19 Feb 7.30pm Theatre £12.50 The brainchild of Harold Rhodes, the revolutionary Fender Rhodes electric piano was born in 1965. Originally built from US Air Force bombers’ surplus parts, it has since become an iconic instrument defining the sound of many 70s classic albums and is now enjoying a well-deserved revival. Tonight brings together some no-less iconic artists to explore the Rhodes’ sonic depths. Ambient and avant-garde composer Harold Budd, best known for his collaborations with Brian Eno on classics such as The Plateau Of Mirror and The Pearl, has applied his meditative minimalist style to the Rhodes. Cult composer and sound-sculptor Simon Fisher Turner came to prominence by scoring most of Derek Jarman’s films and has since produced some of today’s finest electronic music including the recent BFI restored footage of Scott’s journey to Antarctica The Great White Silence. Budd and Turner will be joined on stage by long-time Rhodes obsessive and artist Daniel Biro to create a unique and unmissable collaborative work.

Hailing from Berkshire, Fiona Cox came of age in California in the dawning years of the 21st Century. Citing influences such as Joni Mitchell and Joan Baez, Fiona’s beautiful vocal delivery soars through intricately crafted original material with an emotional force that breaks hearts as often as it impresses. A country-tinged, lyrical act, backed by acoustic guitars.

Goodnight Lenin’s songs are reminiscent of the singer songwriters of the 1960s and 1970s whilst still being relevant to the modern day listener. Inspired by Dylan, Young and Simon & Garfunkel, they constantly strive to deliver honest, experience-based lyrics that flow along into their carefully crafted sound that seamlessly crosses genres.

Stylusboy is the acoustic creation of Steve Jones, a Coventry bred guitarist and vocalist. He has already gained a strong following with his intimate live performances that have seen him play alongside Newton Faulkner and The King Blues, as well as enchanting the crowds from the mainstage of the Godiva Festival.

Folk collective Boat to Row, captained by Michael King, has cast off as a five piece with a fresh energetic sound. King’s nimble guitar melodies cushion a rich set of boy-girl harmonies, tripping glockenspiel, swooning violin and ricocheting drum beat.

Chris Tye marries delicate, gorgeous indie-folk with a city-dwelling, carefree romanticism. In his latest EP, Matchbox Stand, he has captured the beauty and charm of his live performances, as well as bringing a larger sound with more focused production to the table.

The Indiscipline of Painting International abstraction from the 1960s to now The Indiscipline of Painting is an international group exhibition including works by forty-nine artists from the 1960s to now. Selected by British painter Daniel Sturgis, the exhibition considers how abstraction has remained a site of urgent, relevant and critical enquiry for generations of artists over the last 50 years. The exhibition goes on to demonstrate the ways in which the history and legacy of abstract painting continues to inspire artists working today. This is an incredibly rare opportunity to see paintings by historical and contemporary figures. The show brings together works by British, American and European artists made over the last five decades and features major new commissions and loans. It includes important works by Andy Warhol, Frank Stella, Michael Craig-Martin, Peter Young and Bridget Riley alongside younger artists such as Tomma Abts, Tauba Auerbach, Jacob Kassay and Cheyney Thompson.

Family Workshops Our resident artist Nadia will run family workshops on Saturday afternoons to help parents and children explore abstract painting (see page 41). The exhibition will also feature a new commission by Swiss artist Francis Baudevin, and the recreation of a street painting by Gene Davis entitled Franklin’s Footpath, which was originally located in Philadelphia and will be situated outside the Warwick Arts Centre for the duration of the exhibition. The Indiscipline of Painting is a collaborative project between Mead Gallery and Tate St Ives, where it opened on 8 October 2011. Arriving at the Mead Gallery from 14 Jan until 10 Mar, the exhibition also draws on the particular context of the significant colour-field abstract paintings which the University of Warwick has collected over the last 50 years, and which are on display across campus.

‘Papa’ Joseph Haydn didn’t just invent string quartets, he wrote them with more imagination, wit and zest for life than any composer before or since. And as his quartet Op.33 No.5 proves, just because he’s shaking your hand, it doesn’t mean he isn’t about to pull the rug from under your feet. The humour of Shostakovich’s penultimate quartet surprised some listeners too – though there are some very sinister figures lurking in the shadows. But with Beethoven’s second Razumovsky Quartet, the joke is on a cosmic scale.

They say that string quartets are ‘the music of friends’ – so why not share the joy? Antonin Dvořák did exactly that when he invited a double bass to join in his Quintet Op.77, and the result is thirty minutes of Bohemian sunshine, pounding dance-tunes and melodies that you just can’t get out of your head. Earlier on, it’s as if the happiness rubbed off on Dmitri Shostakovich; certainly, he never wrote a more optimistic string quartet than his brilliant First. Schubert’s darkly romantic Rosamunde quartet, meanwhile, distils pain into ravishing poetry. Well, what did you expect from the greatest songwriter of all time?

PING! is a musical promenade starting in the foyer and moving around the Arts Centre, culminating in the premiere performances in the Butterworth Hall of Joe Cutler’s new work for the Coull Quartet and four table tennis players, with film by Tom Dale. The work will explore the strong and distinct sounds and rhythms that table tennis players can create and is inspired by the dynamism of Olympic and Paralympic sports, the passion of human endeavour so central to the Games, and the once-ina-lifetime opportunity of creating a musical work contributing to a global celebration.

He was a man ahead of his time, as his style lends itself to a medium that did not exist in his lifetime. Most of his novels have been adapted for cinema, and by way of celebration Adrian Wootton explores how well cinema has treated Charles. We accept Visa, Mastercard, Delta, Maestro, Amex cards. There is a 50p per ticket booking fee added to all tickets sold at Warwick Arts Centre, whether by phone, online or over the counter (excluding schools and groups of 9+).

On selected events we offer a discounted rate for groups (price shown in brackets plus every 10th ticket FREE). No booking fee. Check Box Office for availability.

reservations: Pay within 4 days, or 30 minutes before, whichever is sooner.

exchanging tickets: Tickets are not normally refundable. Tickets can be exchanged for another performance or for a credit voucher valid for 180 days. However, you must return your original tickets to the Box Office at least 24 hours before the performance (14 days for groups of 9+). There is an administration fee of 50p per ticket. Tickets purchased as part of a subscription or package deal cannot be exchanged for credit vouchers. The booking fee is not refunded. Any credit not used after 180 days have elapsed will go to the Warwick Arts Centre Development Fund.

postage We charge 75p for posting your tickets to you at a UK billing address (if booked one week in advance otherwise we will hold them for collection at the Box Office on the day of performance).

how to find us by car: On approaches to Coventry, simply follow the brown signs to Warwick Arts Centre. We are situated in the centre of the main campus of the University of Warwick. Parking is FREE after 6pm We recommend the following car parks: Car Park 7 (multi-storey, 3 mins walk, directly opposite us). A token / barrier system is used to exit. Please note there can be delays on exit at the end of a busy night. Car Park 8 (multi-storey, 5 mins walk, on left just before Sports Centre). No barrier therefore easy exit, larger spaces!

Car Park 4 (flat surface, behind bus stops towards back of Arts Centre) NB limited no. of spaces Car Park 15 (multi-storey, 10 mins walk). A token / barrier system is used to exit. Please note the multi-storey car parks do not have lifts.
