It is a secret meeting. We must protect the interests of all the other participants. You may not know them by name but you will probably recognise them, because for as long as you can remember they have been looking after you.

They have employed you. They have cut your hair. Sold you your newspaper. They have engaged you in small talk. But that talk was never small, in fact everything that has been said so far has been said to protect you. We can only say that your presence at our meeting will be greatly appreciated. In fact without you there will be no meeting. You are the heart of our organisation. Ring is a sound journey in complete darkness. It is an antidote to choice. Be there for the beginnings of this new show from director David Rosenberg (Electric Hotel, cofounder of Shunt), writer Glen Neath (author of The Outgoing Man and Romcom by Rotozaza) and producers Fuel (Kursk, The Summer House). As with all Triggered at Warwick Arts Centre events, China Plate will be on hand to host an Exchange following each performance. 50p per ticket booking fee applies

You just fucked up. Now what? Sometimes, fuck-ups are so massive, there’s no way back. In this Fringe First winning show, poet Hannah Jane Walker and Chris Thorpe examine the poetic guts of mistakes in a bundle of words and strip lighting. Fucking up is the truest, funniest, most terrifying moment you can experience. You should probably see this if you’ve ever stood on a rake. Or accidentally made your party cocktails with bleach. Or locked yourself in a shed. Or been caught cheating. Or if you’ve done none of these things. Because someone has… And one day you might do them too. The oh fuck moment is a conversation around a desk for brave souls to hold their hands up and admit they fucked up, or for people to laugh at us because we did. “…brilliant celebration of our mistakes.”  Lyn Gardner, The Guardian

The acclaimed West End hit production. One of the seminal plays of the twentieth century, Top Girls flashes with razor-sharp wit and ingenious theatricality. Thatcher’s England: hard-nosed, go-getting businesswoman Marlene is hosting a dinner party to celebrate her promotion to MD of the Top Girls Employment Agency. Her guests, all powerful women from myth and history, make for an extraordinary gathering. Top Girls becomes a muscular, moving study of success – the compromises Marlene has made and, chillingly, what happens to those left behind. Max Stafford-Clark directed the premiere of Top Girls in 1982. His brand new production was a hugely acclaimed hit in the West End in 2011. “Max Stafford-Clark’s immaculate revival. Simple, cryptic, sad and hilarious.”  Time Out “Outrageously funny. A classic play in a classic production.”  The Independent “A piece of theatrical history. The Table

John Peel’s Shed

Wed 15 – Fri 17 Feb 7.45pm Studio £10.50 (£8.50), Under 26s £8 1hr 5mins (no interval)

by John Osborne

Following a sell-out, award-winning run in Edinburgh, puppet innovators Blind Summit Theatre present a brand new adult puppetry show, The Table.

Sun 12 Feb 7.45pm Studio £10.50 (£8.50) 1hr (no interval)

This visually stunning journey takes in a ballet of disembodied heads, a story told entirely by pictures emerging from a briefcase and a tiny Moses with a cardboard head full of lonely wisdom. Told with beautiful puppets and Blind Summit’s trademark performing style, this story combines dark humour and flat-pack technology. No man is an island… but sometimes a puppet can be a table.

In 2002 John Osborne won a competition on John Peel’s Radio One show. His prize was a box of records that took eight years to listen to. This five-star, sell-out smash theatre hit of the Edinburgh Festival is an ode to radio, those records and anyone who’s ever sought solace in wireless. Featuring records previously owned by the late John Peel and partly adapted from his acclaimed book Radio Head (Radio 4’s Book of the Week) with a script edited by Joe Dunthorne (Submarine).

“Astonishingly accomplished puppetry.”  The Daily Telegraph “Blind Summit prove once again that when you’re working in miniature you don’t have to think small.”  The Guardian

“Beautifully written, funny and poignant… Just as John Peel’s records changed his life, this lovely, simple, beautifully executed show has enriched ours.”  The Scotsman “Shy and awkward but with a keen eye for a killer line and the significance of the trivia of daily life, Osborne sits somewhere between Tom Wrigglesworth and Daniel Kitson, which is a very good place to sit. I could have listened for hours.”  The Independent As broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in December 2011

From Jackson Pollock to Amy Winehouse, from Oscar Wilde to Charlie Sheen, everyone’s on something but why? Created solely from material made during a sevenday experiment, in which Bryony was kept in various states of scientific drunkenness. Performed sober. “A bold, brassy yet sobering show with lots of bottle.” The Guardian “Warm, funny and visually stunning.” Time Out “An unabashedly wacky sweetheart with a delightful anything goes air.” The Times A Soho Theatre and Junction co-commission. The Comedy of Errors

Travelling Light by Nicholas Wright with Antony Sher Thu 9 Feb 6.45pm Cinema £15, restricted view £10 How had a twenty-two year old pretentious layabout made a discovery that would elude every other cinematic pioneer for years to come? In a remote village in Eastern Europe, around 1900, the young Motl Mendl is entranced by the flickering silent images on his father’s cinematograph. Bankrolled by Jacob, the ebullient local timbermerchant, and inspired by Anna, the girl sent to help him make moving pictures of their village, he stumbles on a revolutionary way of storytelling. Forty years on, Motl – now a famed American film director – looks back on his early life and confronts the cost of fulfilling his dreams. Following Vincent in Brixton and The Reporter, Nicholas Wright’s new play is a funny and fascinating tribute to the Eastern European immigrants who became major players in Hollywood’s golden age. The award-winning Antony Sher – whose previous work at the National includes Primo and Stanley – returns to play Jacob.

Sleeping or waking? Mad or well advised? Known unto these, and to myself disguised! Two sets of twins separated at birth collide in the same city without meeting for one crazy day, as multiple mistaken identities lead to confusion on a grand scale. And for no one more so than Antipholus of Syracuse and his servant Dromio who, in search of their brothers, arrive in a land entirely foreign to their distant home. Do you know me, sir? Am I Dromio? Am I your man? Am I myself? Shakespeare’s furiously paced comedy is staged in a contemporary world into which walk three prohibited foreigners who see everything for the first time. But thanks to playboy Lumpkin, he’s mistaken by his prospective sonin-law Marlow for an innkeeper, his daughter for the local barmaid. The good news is while Marlow can barely speak to a woman of quality, he’s a charmer with those of a different stamp. And so, as Hardcastle’s indignation intensifies, Miss Hardcastle’s appreciation for her misguided suitor soars. Misdemeanours multiply, love blossoms, mayhem ensues. One of the great, generous-hearted and ingenious comedies of the English language, Goldsmith’s She Stoops To Conquer offers a celebration of chaos, courtship and the dysfunctional family.

International Dance Festival Birmingham 2012 presents Dave St-Pierre Company

Un peu de tendresse bordel de merde! (A little tenderness for crying out loud!) Thu 26 – Sat 28 Apr 7.30pm Theatre £18 (£16), £21 (£19), £24 (£22), Under 26s £12 Age: 18+ please be aware that this production contains explicit adult material that some may find shocking.

We all, at one time or another, need tenderness. Un peu de tendresse bordel de merde! (A little tenderness for crying out loud!) explores the moment of wandering between two love relationships; the different forms of tenderness shared with a dying person, a child, a former lover, a father; the intense request to receive or give tenderness, or to give it when the other refuses. “St-Pierre is a provocateur, but what gives his productions integrity is their underlying sincerity: they demonstrate both the ugliness and the beauty of our basic instincts.” Toronto Life Using humour to tackle taboo subjects the show features 20 dancers, naked both literally and figuratively. As the performers leap with primal urgency, or lie crumpled and defeated on the ground, a narrator leads the audience on a journey through their emotions towards a breathtakingly beautiful and moving finale. Branded the ‘enfant terrible’ of his generation, award-winning Canadian choreographer Dave St-Pierre has been a major force on the contemporary dance scene for over five years and has provoked comparisons with Pina Bausch’s theatre of cruelty. International Dance Festival Birmingham (IDFB) takes place in venues and outdoor spaces across Birmingham and the West Midlands from 23 April – 19 May 2012. Produced by DanceXchange and Birmingham Hippodrome, IDFB is sponsored by Brewin Dolphin and funded by the European Union, Advantage West Midlands, Arts Council England and Birmingham City Council.

Spaghetti Western Orchestra Thu 1 Mar 8pm Butterworth Hall £18.50 (£16.50) The magnificent five are riding into town! Armed with over 100 instruments, these brilliant musicians perform a fistful of Ennio Morricone classics from the movies that made Clint Eastwood a star. The stunning soundtracks include The Good, The Bad and The Ugly, For A Few Dollars More and Once Upon a Time in the West. This ingenious gang of comic maestros underscore these iconic compositions with hilarious sound effects… blowing on bottles, crushing cornflakes, ‘playing’ coathangers, apples, squeaky toys, rubbergloves, bicycle pumps, nailclippers and many more – recreating every punch up, gunshot and jangling spur that define the gun slinging west. “Take five multi-talented, unashamedly theatrical Australians and let them loose on 100 instruments and you have some idea of Spaghetti Western Orchestra. Zoe Jonny Rahman Kearney Quartet & Lucy Farrell Thu 15 Mar 7.45pm Studio £12.50

Mercury-nominated jazz pianist and composer Zoe Rahman will be touring the UK to mark the release of her fifth album, Kindred Spirits. The music is a powerful and fresh portrait of her combined English, Irish and Bengali heritage, and features her brother Idris on clarinet alongside her regular jazz trio partners Gene Calderazzo and Davide Mantovani. As well as touring internationally with her own band Zoe has toured extensively with Courtney Pine, Jerry Dammers’ Spatial AKA Orchestra and Way To Blue: the songs of Nick Drake, among many other projects and her own music reflects the diversity of her musical interests and influences. “Pianist Rahman and her fine quartet began with a set of life-affirming music that was never less than entertaining and intellectually stimulating… a fusion of Bengali and Irish musical influences that was truly remarkable.” Western Mail (Brecon Jazz 2011) “Zoe joyfully celebrates her influences with originality, personality and a certain contemporary verve.” Julian Joseph

Just as likely to appeal to fans of Gillian Welch and Low Anthem as the traditional folk world, their EP, The North Farm Sessions received 4 stars from The Guardian. They have supported both The Unthanks and Bellowhead and appeared at summer festivals including Green Man, End of the Road and Cambridge. “Delicate, thoughtful and intimate.”  The Guardian “There’s something about Jonny and Lucy that makes us feel this is the start of something pretty damn special – They’re made of magic.” MTV

Goodnight Lenin & Boat to Row

Fiona Cox & Stylusboy & Chris Tye Sat 25 Feb 7.45pm Studio £7 (£5.50) A triple bill for this under the radar gig…

Sun 15 Jan 7.45pm Studio £7 (£5.50)

Hailing from Berkshire, Fiona Cox came of age in California in the dawning years of the 21st Century. Citing influences such as Joni Mitchell and Joan Baez, Fiona’s beautiful vocal delivery soars through intricately crafted original material with an emotional force that breaks hearts as often as it impresses. A country-tinged, lyrical act, backed by acoustic guitars.

Goodnight Lenin’s songs are reminiscent of the singer songwriters of the 1960s and 1970s whilst still being relevant to the modern day listener. Inspired by Dylan, Young and Simon & Garfunkel, they constantly strive to deliver honest, experience-based lyrics that flow along into their carefully crafted sound that seamlessly crosses genres.

Stylusboy is the acoustic creation of Steve Jones, a Coventry bred guitarist and vocalist. He has already gained a strong following with his intimate live performances that have seen him play alongside Newton Faulkner and The King Blues, as well as enchanting the crowds from the mainstage of the Godiva Festival.

Folk collective Boat to Row, captained by Michael King, has cast off as a five piece with a fresh energetic sound. King’s nimble guitar melodies cushion a rich set of boy-girl harmonies, tripping glockenspiel, swooning violin and ricocheting drum beat.

Chris Tye marries delicate, gorgeous indie-folk with a city-dwelling, carefree romanticism. In his latest EP, Matchbox Stand, he has captured the beauty and charm of his live performances, as well as bringing a larger sound with more focused production to the table.

Conductor Antonio Pappano Viola Antoine Tamestit When Elgar’s First Symphony was premiered in 1909, it sent shockwaves through British music. Everyone knew that Elgar could write a great tune – but they didn’t realise that a British composer could write music of such blazing drama and heartfelt emotion. It’s still the greatest of all British symphonies, so who better to play it than the Rolls Royce of British orchestras, the mighty London Symphony, and a conductor who knows better than anyone that being British doesn’t mean being buttoned-up – Antonio Pappano, the hugely popular Music Director of the Royal Opera House.

So expect tingles to run down spines in this shamelessly romantic programme, devised specially for Warwick Arts Centre. The Indiscipline of Painting International abstraction from the 1960s to now The Indiscipline of Painting is an international group exhibition including works by forty-nine artists from the 1960s to now. Selected by British painter Daniel Sturgis, the exhibition considers how abstraction has remained a site of urgent, relevant and critical enquiry for generations of artists over the last 50 years. The exhibition goes on to demonstrate the ways in which the history and legacy of abstract painting continues to inspire artists working today. This is an incredibly rare opportunity to see paintings by historical and contemporary figures. The show brings together works by British, American and European artists made over the last five decades and features major new commissions and loans. It includes important works by Andy Warhol, Frank Stella, Michael Craig-Martin, Peter Young and Bridget Riley alongside younger artists such as Tomma Abts, Tauba Auerbach, Jacob Kassay and Cheyney Thompson.

Quartet in G major Op. 33 No.5 Quartet No.14 in F sharp major Op.142 Quartet in E minor Op.59 No.2 Razumovsky

‘Papa’ Joseph Haydn didn’t just invent string quartets, he wrote them with more imagination, wit and zest for life than any composer before or since. And as his quartet Op.33 No.5 proves, just because he’s shaking your hand, it doesn’t mean he isn’t about to pull the rug from under your feet. The humour of Shostakovich’s penultimate quartet surprised some listeners too – though there are some very sinister figures lurking in the shadows. But with Beethoven’s second Razumovsky Quartet, the joke is on a cosmic scale.

Shostakovich Schubert Dvorák ˇ

They say that string quartets are ‘the music of friends’ – so why not share the joy? Antonin Dvořák did exactly that when he invited a double bass to join in his Quintet Op.77, and the result is thirty minutes of Bohemian sunshine, pounding dance-tunes and melodies that you just can’t get out of your head. Earlier on, it’s as if the happiness rubbed off on Dmitri Shostakovich; certainly, he never wrote a more optimistic string quartet than his brilliant First. Schubert’s darkly romantic Rosamunde quartet, meanwhile, distils pain into ravishing poetry. Well, what did you expect from the greatest songwriter of all time?

In one extraordinary new work, lovers of Baroque opera have it all: the world’s best singers, glorious music of the Baroque masters and a story drawn from Shakespeare. In The Enchanted Island, the lovers from Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream are shipwrecked on his other-worldly island of The Tempest. Inspired by the musical pastiches and masques of the 18th century, the work showcases arias and ensembles by Handel, Vivaldi, Rameau and others and a new libretto devised and written by Jeremy Sams.

Salvagepunk Wed 18 Jan 7.15pm Conference Room £5 (£3) An evening heralding the arrival of the newest rebel on the literary scene: salvagepunk. Hosted by Evan C Williams, internationally-renowned salvagepunk guru (and author of Combined and Uneven Apocalypse), China Miéville (triple Arthur C. Clarke Award winner) and guests, this promises to be an extraordinary night of readings, discussions and unexpected ideas, reclaimed from the literary refuse heap. In China Miéville’s words this will be: “a cobbled together and junk-sutured evening of film snips, rag-ends of poetry, art garbage, half-heard scraps of discarded theory and a messy coagulum of other conceptual rejectamenta, dug stinking out of the cultural dump and forced into new and ungainly shape by a bickering troupe of recusant trash-swaggerers.”

Saturday Film Talk Adrian Wootton: Bicentenary of Dickens’ Birth Sat 28 Jan 11am – 3.30pm Cinema £10 (£6.50) Charles Dickens will be 200 this month. He was a man ahead of his time, as his style lends itself to a medium that did not exist in his lifetime. Most of his novels have been adapted for cinema, and by way of celebration Adrian Wootton explores how well cinema has treated Charles. Adrian has explored adaptations of Graham Greene and Raymond Chandler for us previously. There will be a complete screening of David Lean’s 1946 classic – still the most visually striking Dickens film Great Expectations.

Simon Callow: Charles Dickens and the Great Theatre of the World Sat 11 Feb 7.15pm Conference Room £15 (£13) Join Simon Callow as he reads excerpts from his exciting new book, Charles Dickens and the Great Theatre of the World. Simon says: “When you find a writer that you love it’s like finding a best friend. Dickens never ceases to delight me. There’s something in him which chimes with me: the energy; the scope; the generosity; the endless inventiveness of it. There is in Dickens the spirit of the medieval carnival that just deeply turns me on. That sense of the world as one big body and a celebration and embrace of all its grotesqueness, the ugliness, the smell, the sweat.” This promises to be an extraordinary evening, celebrating a great novelist.

James Campbell is a stand up comedian for children over 6, their parents and anyone who likes comedy without the rude words. His show may cover ways to make parsnips interesting, how to look a chicken in both eyes at the same time and why owls don’t like Easter. James may also attempt a new world record in badger-hurdling and doing loop-the-loop with his 93 year old Auntie Histamine. The show may also involve three dancing oatcakes called Celia, Amelia and Dealor-no-Delia and a discussion on “Horses: Friends or big-headed twits?” (Contents may vary and the actual show may not involve any of the above!)
