Midnight in Paris 12A
hello
Fri 28 Oct – Thu 3 Nov Dir: Woody Allen Spain / US 2011 94mins Cast: Owen Wilson, Rachel McAdams, Marion Cotillard, Michael Sheen
It looks as though the Awards’ Season has started early! You normally expect the big, serious films to crowd into the first three months of the year but a number are here before Christmas, suggesting that even more and better is yet to come.
Woody Allen’s latest romantic comedy is set firmly in Paris where he follows the nocturnal wanderings of Gil (Wilson).
Roland Emmerich’s glossy costume piece, Anonymous, suggests that Shakespeare was a drunken illiterate who fronted for the Earl of Oxford; a proposition to send shock waves through the local economy! Rhys Ifans is a charismatic Earl of Oxford, and Rafe Spall a wonderful loutish Bard in a bewitching tale of deceit and intrigue. Tilda Swinton has never been far from the awards lists in the past few years and her latest appearance in We Need To Talk About Kevin will return her to that spotlight once more. This alarming novel has been sympathetically adapted for the screen and vividly portrays a parental nightmare.
A couple comes to stay in the French capital for professional reasons. They discover that, despite their fantasies, Parisian life is not really right for them. Gil starts to look at night for what he can’t find during the day. During his nightly perambulations he comes across a cast of characters as disparate as they are impressive…
“Marvellously romantic. A credible blend of whimsy and wisdom.” The New York Times “4 Stars. Prime Woody Allen – Insightful, philosophical and very funny.” Time Out, New York
Fans of Nordic Noir will be delighted to see The Silence, after The Millennium Trilogy and The Killing on TV, more gritty and grisly crimes dissected in minute social detail and brilliantly shot. In contrast to this, we see the 10th anniversary re-issue of Amélie, the most beguiling French comedy of the er… last decade (although keep your eyes open for The Artist in the New Year). This heralds the return of the French Film Festival screenings at the beginning of December. Surprise pleasure of the season is Morgan Spurlock, mercifully slimmed down from his Supersize Me adventure to deliver The Greatest Movie Ever Sold, a journey into the bizarre world of movie making and product placement, fronted by a beguiling and entertaining enthusiast who can clearly sell ice to Eskimos! Enjoy!

The Debt POM Wonderful Presents: The Greatest Movie Ever Sold
The Debt 15 Fri 28 Oct – Thu 3 Nov Dir: John Madden US 2010 114mins Cast: Helen Mirren, Sam Worthington, Tom Wilkinson Even the best secret agents carry a debt from a past mission. Rachel Singer must now face up to hers… The story begins in 1997, as shocking news reaches retired Mossad secret agents Rachel (Mirren) and Stephan (Wilkinson) about their former colleague David (Hinds). All three have been venerated for decades by Israel because of the secret mission that they embarked on for their country back in 1965-66, when the trio tracked down Nazi war criminal Dieter Vogel. While Rachel found herself grappling with romantic feelings during the mission, the net around Vogel was tightened by using her as bait. At great risk, and at considerable personal cost, the team’s mission was accomplished – or was it? The suspense builds in and across two different time periods, with startling action and surprising revelations.
“A superbly crafted espionage thriller.” Los Angeles Times
POM Wonderful Presents: The Greatest Movie Ever Sold 12A Fri 4 – Thu 10 Nov Dir: Morgan Spurlock US 2011 90mins Cast: Morgan Spurlock, JJ Abrams Boundary-pushing Oscar-nominated filmmaker Morgan Spurlock explores the world of product placement, marketing and advertising, in this film that was fully financed through product placement from various brands, all of which are integrated transparently into the film. While using brands in film production is not new for Hollywood, it certainly is new territory for the documentary format. Spurlock exploits the phenomenon to new heights, with everything from branded pizza boxes and in-flight film promotions to branded-everything in-film. With humour and insight, POM Wonderful Presents: The Greatest Movie Ever Sold unmasks the marketing process to bring audiences behind closed doors, directly into the pitch meetings and marketing presentations which ultimately inform our everyday entertainment decisions. 3

Anonymous We Need To Talk About Kevin
Anonymous 12A Fri 11 – Sun 20 Nov Dir: Roland Emmerich UK / Germany 2011 129mins Cast: Rhys Ifans, Vanessa Redgrave, David Thewliss Was Shakespeare a fraud? Set in the political snake-pit of Elizabethan England, Anonymous speculates on an issue that has for centuries intrigued academics and brilliant minds ranging from Mark Twain and Charles Dickens to Henry James and Sigmund Freud, namely: who was the author of the plays credited to William Shakespeare? Experts have debated, books have been written, and scholars have devoted their lives to protecting or debunking theories surrounding the authorship of the most renowned works in English Literature. Anonymous poses one possible answer, focusing on a time when cloak-and-dagger political intrigue, illicit romances in the Royal Court, and the schemes of greedy nobles hungry for the power of the throne were exposed in the most unlikely of places: the London stage.
We Need To Talk About Kevin 15 Fri 11 – Thu 17 Nov Dir: Lynne Ramsay UK / US 2011 112mins Cast: Tilda Swinton, John C. Reilly, Ezra Miller We Need To Talk About Kevin, from acclaimed Scottish director Lynne Ramsey, is an intimate and disturbing look at a mother confronting very dark truths about her teenage son. Based on Lionel Shriver’s Orange Prizewinning bestseller of the same name, the film stars Tilda Swinton in a heartbreaking performance as Eva, a once-vibrant woman who finds herself re-examining her life and role as a mother, and her possible complicity in the fact that Kevin has always been evil. Enhanced by a brilliantly subtle score by Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood, Ramsey’s film poses nature-versusnurture questions about predisposition, maternal instinct, guilt and conditional love. The answers are far from clear-cut, so be prepared for a post-credits debate among friends.

Satyagraha
Amélie 15
Fri 18 – Thu 24 Nov Dir: George Clooney US 2011 101mins Cast: George Clooney, Ryan Gosling, Paul Giamatti, Philip Seymour Hoffman Having taken a historical look at politics and the news media in his earlier film Good Night, and Good Luck, George Clooney comes bang up-to-date with this smart and incisive exploration of dirty politics on the campaign trail. Based on Beau Willimon’s award-winning play Farragut North, The Ides of March brings together an outstanding cast in a story of ambition, loyalty, betrayal and revenge. It’s the frantic last days before a heavily contested Ohio presidential primary, when an up-and-coming campaign press secretary (Gosling) finds himself involved in a political scandal that threatens to upend his candidate’s shot at the presidency. Crisply written and classily delivered, this is a riveting and suspenseful drama and a film that is most definitely of and for our times.

Wuthering Heights 15
Wuthering Heights
Fri 2 – Thu 8 Dec Dir: Andrea Arnold UK 2011 129mins Cast: Kaya Scodelario, James Howson No starched lace, no panoramic views, no sweeping score – Andrea Arnold takes Emily Brontë’s classic novel and strips it to the root of youthful passion. Following her bracing portraits of female desire in Red Road and Fish Tank, Arnold pushes even further here, portraying love as a rush of heart-stopping beauty, cruelty and impulsive acts. Avoiding the typical pleasantries of period romance, Arnold’s Wuthering Heights uses natural sounds in place of a score, emphasising the rhythms of wind, voices and silence. Arnold places Cathy and Heathcliff within a specific and sometimes harsh environment, the effect is to bring Brontë’s characters closer to nature. Handheld camera work captures every look and touch exchanged between the passionate young lovers, swaying and darting into the wet black mud one minute, carried aloft withCredit a bird the next.

In the early summer of 1956, 23 year-old Colin Clark worked as a lowly assistant on the set of The Princess and the Showgirl, the film that united Sir Laurence Olivier with Marilyn Monroe, who, whilst shooting, was also on honeymoon with her new husband, the playwright Arthur Miller. Nearly 40 years on, his diary account The Prince, The Showgirl and Me was published, but one week was missing, and this is the story of that week: an idyll in which he escorted a Monroe desperate to get away from her retinue of Hollywood hangers-on and the pressures of working.

This tense, atmospheric adaptation of John Le Carré’s seminal best-seller features a stellar cast including Mark Strong, Benedict Cumberbatch, John Hurt and Simon McBurney.

Mia Wasikowska (Alice in Wonderland) and Michael Fassbender (Inglourious Basterds) star in the iconic lead roles of the romantic drama, the heroine of which continues to inspire new generations of devoted readers and viewers.
“A classic for a new generation! Mia Wasikowska is splendid. Michael Fassbender is superb. He inhabits the glowering Rochester with erotic intensity and leavening wit. They make a pair of ravishing romantics. Judi Dench is excellent.” Rolling Stone “Beautiful. A splendid example of how to turn a beloved work of classic literature into a movie.” The New York Times
The collision of the two worlds – old England and new Hollywood – is as incongruous as it is delightful. Slowly Marilyn begins to shake off the dark fog of insecurity and fear always hovering around her. She is not without her contradictions – everyone wants something from her and the pressure is crushing her… yet, for a moment, lost in the English countryside, it seems she might finally escape. Marcel Pagnol celebrated the life of Marseille and Provence in a tapestry of novels, plays and films, many of which have made their way to the screen or been remade after his death. Jean de Florette, Manon des Sources, La Gloire de mon Père and the Marius/Fanny/Caesar trilogy are staples of French cinema.
