We Are Many tells the story of 15 February 2003, when over 30 million people in over 800 cities across the world marched in demonstration against the Iraq War. The documentary charts the events and discourse that led to the day of protest, the biggest global demonstration ever, with first person testimonies from activists and demonstrators, and contributions from many of the key leading political and cultural figures of the time. An inspiring story about the power of modern communications which provided a template for many of the epoch-defining popular protests of the last decade.

Fri 18 – Thu 24 Mar Dir: James Vanderbilt US 2015 125mins Cast: Cate Blanchett, Robert Redford, Dennis Quaid, Elisabeth Moss, Topher Grace
Fri 18 – Mon 28 Mar Dir: Ethan Coen, Joel Coen US 2016 106mins Cast: Josh Brolin, George Clooney, Ralph Fiennes, Jonah Hill, Scarlett Johansson, Tilda Swinton, Channing Tatum
James Vanderbilt’s (screenwriter of Zodiac, The Amazing Spiderman) directorial debut details the 2004 CBS 60 Minutes report investigating then-President George W. Bush’s draft-dodging military service, and the subsequent firestorm of criticism that cost anchor Dan Rather and producer Mary Mapes their careers. Robert Redford is outstanding as Dan Rather, and Cate Blanchett rises to the challenge of portraying his nervy producer and confidante Mary Mapes with aplomb. Truth is a thrilling piece of filmmaking about journalism and politics in the tawdry age of counter-messaging.
Truth
Set in 1950s Hollywood, the comedy follows a single day in the life of Eddie Mannix (Brolin), Head of Physical Production at Capitol Pictures. He is, however, more of a fixer; constantly putting out fires, soothing egos and solving problems for big names and stars in the industry. When Whitlock (Clooney), a dim-witted star of a cheesy Roman biblical epic is kidnapped and held for ransom, Mannix is faced with his largest problem to fix yet. The Coen brothers (No Country for Old Men, The Big Lebowski) take on a comedy which poses serious questions about life and creative frustration. Hail, Caesar!

Ben Wheatley’s (Sightseers, Kill List) High-Rise is a dystopian new film based on J.G Ballard’s 1975 novel, an unrestrained and brilliant satire of both 1960s social idealism and the Thatcherite values that undermined it.
Screened at the 2015 London Film Festival where it was hailed as “close to being an instant classic” by the Evening Standard, Couple in a Hole follows a Scottish couple who fled to the French countryside after their previous home was destroyed by a wildfire.
The film follows young, respectable doctor, Robert Laing (Hiddleston) who moves into a new luxury apartment in a concrete tower block. Inhabited by eccentric tenants who let off steam in endless rounds of themed parties, this insular society is managed by the high-rise’s architect Mr Royal (Irons), until everything begins to fall to pieces.

Escaping from their most recent failed robbery they wind up pretending to be ‘beat poets’ at a Welsh poetry retreat. While there, they both fall for the smouldering charms of Richard (Tom Cullen – Downton Abbey), make a mess of putting up tents and hear lots of bad poetry. A very entertaining low budget UK film that will leave you smiling. 10

Eddie the Eagle
Taron Egerton (Testament of Youth) stars as Edwards, who in his Gloucestershire childhood fosters the seemingly unlikely goal of becoming an Olympic athlete, despite any obvious sporting skills. With sheer drive, ambition and perseverance he eventually employs a tough coach (Jackman) and manages to prove everyone wrong. A very British production about a very British hero – a film full of warmth and wit.

From her early starring roles as blond ingénue in Jacques Demy’s 1960s musicals, Catherine Deneuve forged a unique career as the star of international art cinema. Now in her 70s, she shows no sign of slowing down, stepping gracefully into roles of strong, active older women, as in the recent successful art films Three Hearts and Standing Tall. This illustrated presentation discusses the various incarnations of Catherine Deneuve and asks what the secret of such longevity on screen is.
