HELLO The spring programme spotlights extraordinary women. Few are more remarkable than Sabine de Barra, horticulturist and designer of some of the epic gardens at the Palace of Versailles. Kate Winslet presents her as a cause to ‘praise older women’ in Alan Rickman’s unusual historical drama, A Little Chaos. Carey Mulligan brings a strong and independent Bathsheba Everdene to the fore in the latest adaptation of Hardy’s Far from the Madding Crowd. Helen Mirren is the tenacious Austrian refugee wrangling with the government to reclaim the art stolen from her by the Nazis. Juliette Binoche delivers an outstanding performance as an actress revisiting the role that made her famous amid the Clouds of Sils Maria. From Norway, Blind tells stories of perception and fantasy through the eyes of a woman who has recently lost her sight. From Poland come the Oscar winning Ida and wartime drama Stones for the Rampart. From Hungary White God reminds us how vivid and visual cinema can be. Phoenix, from Germany, recounts a search for lost love in the years after the War. From France Samba, by the makers of The Untouchables, starring Omar Sy, takes a warm, sympathetic look at life for illegal immigrants in Paris and The New Girlfriend with Romain Duris in a wry comedy of parenting and gender roles. Every so often comes a film that is so much of its time and full of insight. Timbuktu is one such, viewing the influx of Muslim fundamentalists into Saharan Africa. Whatever the weather, May and June will be warm, bright and full of surprises in the cinema.

Tue 26 May 6.30pm Dir: Phil Grabsky UK 2015 90mins

Newly restored version of Powell and Pressburger’s visually sumptuous and colourful adaptation of Jacques Offenbach’s final, unfinished opera, Les Contes d’Hoffmann.

The Impressionists features unique access to a major new exhibition from the Musee du Luxembourg Paris, National Gallery London and Philadelphia Museum, focussing on the man credited with inventing Impressionism as we know it: 19th century Parisian art collector Paul Durand-Ruel.

Often seen as a companion piece to Powell and Pressburger’s earlier (and equally masterful) Red Shoes, the film shares many key personnel as the poet Hoffmann tells tales of three women who break his heart: a mechanical performing doll, a courtesan, and a singer. “[A] RAVISHING SYMPHONY OF SIGHT AND SOUND.”  The Guardian
