The Big Short 15

Sun 1 – Mon 2 May Dir: Tom McCarthy US 2015 129mins Cast: Mark Ruffalo, Michael Keaton, Rachel McAdams

Sun 1 – Tue 3 May Dir: Sebastian Schipper Germany 2015 138mins Some subtitles Cast: Laia Costa, Frederick Lau, Franz Rogowski

Tue 3 & Wed 4 May Dir: Adam McKay US 2015 130mins Cast: Christian Bale, Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling, Brad Pitt

In 2001, scandals of abuse and molestation by priests came to a new height – when a group of Boston Globe reporters exposed a widespread corruption within the Catholic Church, shaking the system to its core.

An intelligent comedy starring Ryan Gosling and Brad Pitt, The Big Short tells the story of a group of men who predicted the credit and housing bubble collapse of the mid2000s and decided to take on the big banks for their lack of foresight and greed.

Rachel McAdams (Midnight in Paris), Michael Keaton (Birdman) and Mark Ruffalo (The Kids Are Alright), against the backdrop of 9/11, push themselves to breaking point to bring into the open a vastly disturbing subject matter.

Shot in one fluid, continuous take, Victoria pulls the audience into a vivid and wild uncontrollable night out in Berlin. Four young Berliners meet Victoria, a young Spanish woman newly moved to Berlin, outside a club, and romance kicks in. They stumble through the night, drinking, dancing, flirting, until she finds herself involved in a crime and events that spiral out of control. Winner of the Silver Bear for Outstanding Artistic Achievement at Berlinale 2015, Victoria is a breathless, visceral thrill-ride.

Low-key, intense, and very, very secretive, it should be just as loved by similar audiences today.

Thu 19 May 6.10pm followed by Q&A with Richard Loncraine Dir: Richard Loncraine UK 1995 104mins Cast: Ian McKellen, Annette Bening, Nigel Hawthorne, Robert Downey Jr., Kristin Scott Thomas, Maggie Smith

Fri 20 – Sun 22 May Dir: Don Cheadle US 2015 100mins Cast: Don Cheadle, Ewan McGregor

The classic Shakespearean play about a murderously scheming king is staged in an alternative fascist England setting, superbly realised in the remastered southern landscapes: the Brighton Pavilion is turned into a seaside palace and the Armageddon of Bosworth Field is played out with Battersea Power Station as a backdrop. A seamless, high-octane thriller of power and politics with brilliant performances from a stellar cast.

Written and directed by actor Don Cheadle (Hotel Rwanda), Miles Ahead is a free-form biopic on undisputed jazz legend Miles Davies. Unpicking a complex and multifaceted character, Cheadle gives a brilliant performance, full of attitude, as he explores both the persona and the myth. Using flashbacks and a loose improvisatory style, similar to that of Jazz, Cheadle effortlessly evokes the period as well as Davies’ proud, neurotic swagger and turbulent life as he recounts his exploits to Rolling Stone reporter Dave Braden (Ewan McGregor).
