CREATIVE WARWICK Image: Creative Warwick
Creative Warwick 2017 is a celebration of the 250+ student societies at Warwick. Taking place each month from January through to the end of June, there will be something for everyone to get involved with or watch. Led by Warwick Students’ Union, in partnership with Warwick Arts Centre and the University of Warwick, Creative Warwick will showcase all the incredible things societies get up to and will culminate in June with the first-ever ‘Warwick Fringe Festival’, which is open to all. By raising awareness of the creativity inherent to student societies, we aim to encourage a discussion around the theme ‘What is creativity?’, and what can we do to foster it across all generations?

Situation with Outstretched Arm
Overload
In this transcendental performance created by Philippe Saire, one of Europe’s leading exponents of experimental choreography, movement and visual arts converge and bodies weave through black holes and shards of dazzling light. The slo-mo optical canvas mesmerises as two male forms float through a vacuum created in space.

The saluto Romano, the Olympic salute, the Bellamy Salute or, in its most common form, the Hitler Salute is one of the most powerful and violent symbols of the twentieth century. This German production by Oliver Zahn takes a unique cross-discipline approach to a controversial subject, re-contextualising through physical performance and essay.
Overload is a fast paced and explosive physical theatre performance by four Italians intent on dissecting the noisy interruptions that bombard our dayto-day lives. Through a witty narrative, the show jumps from one distraction to another analysing the feelings triggered by something ending prematurely and our perpetual sense of confusion.

My Country; a work in progress In the words of people across the UK and Carol Ann Duffy Directed by Rufus Norris Thu 25 – Fri 26 May 7.30pm Sat 27 May 2pm & 7.30pm In the days following the Brexit vote, a team from the National Theatre spoke to people nationwide, aged 9 to 97, to hear their views on the country we call home. Britannia calls a meeting, to listen to her people. Caledonia, Cymru, East Midlands, North East, Northern Ireland and the South West bring the voices of their regions. The debate is passionate, the darts are sharp, stereotypes nailed and opinions divided. Can there ever be a United Kingdom? A new twist on Shakespeare’s classic comedy of mistaken identity.
Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter, The Woman in Black), Joshua McGuire (The Hour) and David Haig (Four Weddings and a Funeral, The Witness for the Prosecution) star in Tom Stoppard’s brilliantly funny situation comedy. Against the backdrop of Hamlet, two hapless minor characters, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, take centre stage. As the young double act stumble their way in and out of the action of Shakespeare’s iconic drama, they become increasingly out of their depth as their version of the story unfolds. A ship is wrecked on the rocks. Viola is washed ashore but her twin brother Sebastian is lost. Determined to survive on her own, she steps out to explore a new land. The nearby households of Olivia and Orsino are overrun with passion. Where music is the food of love, and nobody is quite what they seem, anything proves possible. Simon Godwin (NT: Man and Superman, The Beaux’ Stratagem) directs this joyous new production with Tamsin Greig (Friday Night Dinner, Black Books, Episodes) as a transformed Malvolia. 3hrs 30mins Theatre £18, £11 (restricted view)
Angus Jackson directs Shakespeare’s epic political tragedy, as the race to claim the empire spirals out of control. Caesar returns from war, allconquering, but mutiny is rumbling through the corridors of power. The Rome season in the Royal Shakespeare Theatre opens with the politics of spin and betrayal turning to violence. Following his sell-out productions of Tom Morton-Smith’s Oppenheimer (2014) and James Fenton’s adaptation of Don Quixote (2016), Season Director Angus Jackson steers the thrilling action. Wed 24 May 7pm Iqbal Khan directs Shakespeare’s tragedy of love and duty, picking up the story where Julius Caesar ends. Following Caesar’s assassination, Mark Antony has reached the heights of power. Now he has neglected his empire for a life of decadent seduction with his mistress, Cleopatra, Queen of Egypt. Torn between love and duty, Antony’s military brilliance deserts him, and his passion leads the lovers to their tragic end. 3hrs 30mins Cinema £18, £11 (restricted view)
Sat 10 Jun 1pm All children, except one, grow up… When Peter Pan, leader of the Lost Boys, loses his shadow, headstrong Wendy helps him to reattach it. In return, she is invited to Neverland, where Tinker Bell, Tiger Lily and the vengeful Captain Hook await. A riot of magic, music and makebelieve ensues.
The story has been told before, but never like this. An occupied desert nation. A radical from the wilderness on hunger strike. A girl whose mysterious dance will change the course of the world. This charged retelling turns the infamous biblical tale on its head, placing the girl we call Salomé at the centre of a revolution.
Captured live at the National Theatre, this is a recorded performance of JM Barrie’s much-loved tale.

12A The decay of Rome reaches violent depths in Shakespeare’s most bloody play.
Part 2 Perestroika Thu 27 Jul 7pm America in the mid-1980s. In the midst of the AIDS crisis and a conservative Reagan administration, New Yorkers grapple with life and death, love and sex, heaven and hell. Andrew Garfield (Silence, Hacksaw Ridge) plays Prior Walter along with a cast including Denise Gough (People, Places and Things), Nathan Lane (The Producers), James McArdle (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) and Russell Tovey (The Pass). This new staging of Tony Kushner’s multi-award-winning two-part play is directed by Olivier and Tony awardwinning director Marianne Elliott (The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time and War Horse).
Titus is a ruler exhausted by war and loss, who relinquishes power but leaves Rome in disorder. Rape, cannibalism and severed body parts fill the moral void at the heart of this corrupt society. Shakespeare’s gory revenge tragedy presents us with murder as entertainment, and, as the body count piles up, poses questions about the nature of sexuality, family, class and society.

Christoph König Tasmin Little
Wagner’s majestic Prelude to Die Meistersinger raises the curtain on a whole world of sunshine, melody and romance – so it’s a fitting opener for Bruch’s perennially-popular First Violin Concerto. From twilit opening to the gypsy passion of its exuberant finale, Bruch could have written it for the gleaming sound and effortless charm of Tasmin Little – a national treasure who’s conquered the world. Rachmaninov’s mighty Second Symphony is opulent and impassioned, swept by thunderous winter storms and filled to bursting with the kind of long, blissful tunes that only Rachmaninov could write. This might just be the ultimate Russian romantic symphony. Pre-concert Talk: Woods-Scawen Room 6.15pm £2.50 In conversation with Tasmin Little 18
Yuri Simonov Freddy Kempf
Shostakovich’s Festive Overture is a fabulously tuneful way to light the blue touch paper on a whole evening of Russian fireworks from the Moscow Philharmonic – the great Russian orchestra that premiered several of Shostakovich’s symphonies. Tonight it’s all about colour as Yuri Simonov conjures the dancing chickens, glowing skulls and flying witches of Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition. Russian music simply doesn’t get any more brilliant or more entertaining – unless, of course, you’re lucky enough to witness a top-flight pianist in Rachmaninov’s sweeping Third Piano Concerto. It’s said that this Everest of romantic piano concertos demands a pianist with hands of steel and a heart of gold: and former BBC Young Musician of the Year Freddy Kempf has both. 3 Divertimenti 3 Idylls Quartet Op.103 (unfinished) Quartet in A minor 132
Genius doesn’t always love company. When Haydn taught Beethoven, they didn’t really hit it off. But then, we’re talking about the two supreme masters of the string quartet, and Haydn’s unfinished last quartet actually makes a wonderfully poignant counterpart to Beethoven’s heart-breaking Op.132: a suffering genius praying through his music, and finding both strength and profound beauty in response. Benjamin Britten had a much warmer relationship with his teacher Frank Bridge and their spring-fresh miniatures are a gateway into a world that may surprise and delight even British music fans who think they’ve heard it all. Patience pokes fun at the eccentric affectations of barely-disguised Victorian celebrities, including Oscar Wilde and his followers. Willowy poets, sighing maidens, hearty milkmaids and burly officers – all become targets of Gilbert and Sullivan’s razor-sharp wit. Expect plenty of tunes and humour as fresh today as it was at the first performance.
Puccini’s visceral depiction of love in the midst of a war-torn Rome, Tosca is one of the world’s best-loved operas, brimming with lust, corruption and political intrigue. When the painter Cavaradossi helps a fugitive escape, he attracts the attention of Scarpia, the malevolent chief of police. What will Tosca be prepared to sacrifice to save her lover from his fate?

alongside pieces which emphasise the structural or aesthetic properties of interior space. Nan Goldin’s photographic series, Empty Rooms, Berlin/Hamburg (1983-96), taken in brothels, hotels and gay bars, speaks of absent human subjects and activities that have taken place there. Beverly Buchanan’s series of miniature houses (2009-12), roughly crafted out of wood, allude to shacks, cabins and other basic human dwellings, including those damaged by hurricanes. Heidi Bucher’s
Herrenzimmer (1977-78) or ‘room skin’ is an installation made by moulding, in skin-like sheets of latex, the interior of her father’s study in the parental home. The exhibition also includes Cell XVII (Portrait) (2000) by Louise Bourgeois, in which a single elongated head is housed within a glass-fronted cage: a structure both protective and imprisoning. Together, such works depict the room as a tangible entity, rooted in a specific place and time, and yet charged with emotional and imaginative resonance.

Andy Zaltzman returns to plot his planet’s path to and/or from preservation and/or perdition. Edinburgh Comedy Award nominee 2016 and New Act of the Year award winner Bilal Zafar brings us his highly anticipated debut show Cakes.
Come and see what Jon Richardson can do with words when he has more than thirty seconds to work with. Or should that be “with which to work”? “ONE OF OUR MOST INDIVIDUAL AND INTERESTING STAND-UPS” ★★★★★ The Times Butterworth Hall £22.50
“POLITICAL COMEDY AT ITS BEST” Sunday Times Studio £13

Our cover photograph this season is the third and final in our series of images of Warwick Arts Centre audiences and staff taken for the 2016–2017 season around the campus of the University of Warwick. This picture was taken on the grass outside the front doors of the Arts Centre. It’s a place to investigate as it’s the location of three interesting sculptures made of black basalt by Japanese artist Atsuo Okamoto* (Tip: listen carefully to them, you might hear something interesting). There’s also an oak tree planted on the occasion of the visit in 2000 to the University of Warwick of the then United States President Bill Clinton and Prime Minister Tony Blair. Do take a look for yourself next time you visit. On our cover are energetic Ria and Harriet. Ria is one of our Family Ambassadors and Harriet is currently studying for a PGCE at Warwick. This space will be in action again with creative activities (weather permitting, but we’re sure the sun will be shining) on our Family Day on Sun 4 Jun 10am – 5pm. Come along, it’s free and everyone is welcome!
