Fleabag by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, performed by Maddie Rice Tue 8 – Sat 12 May 7.45pm Following the BAFTA award-winning BBC series, DryWrite and Soho Theatre bring you the acclaimed stage production of Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s cult hit. Fleabag may seem over-sexed, emotionally unfiltered and self-obsessed, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg. With family and friendships under strain and a guinea pig themed café struggling to keep afloat, Fleabag suddenly finds herself with nothing to lose. Stumbling through a maze of social anxiety, disastrous job interviews and meaningless sex, Fleabag serves up an uproariously funny and true account of some sort of a female living her sort of life. 1hr 5mins / Age 15+ The Goose Nest £18 (£16), Under 26s £13 Post Show Talk Thu 10 May

Love, Bombs And Apples
It’s 50 years on. The 70-year-old is confronted by the 20-year-old. Do they share the same beliefs? If not, is it the world that’s changed, or him? Why did his generation vote Brexit? Has he sold in or sold out?
Love, Bombs and Apples is the comic and poignant new play from award-winning playwright Hassan Abdulrazzak – a tale of four men, each from different parts of the globe, all experiencing a moment of revelation. A Palestinian actor learns there is more to English girls than pure sex appeal. A Pakistani-born terror suspect figures out what is wrong with his first novel. A British youth suspects all is not what it seems with his object of desire. A New Yorker asks his girlfriend for a sexual favour at the worst possible time. This one man play is extremely funny with a sharp cutting edge for today’s multi-cultural Britain. 1hr 30mins / Age 16+ The Goose Nest £15 (£13), Under 26s £10 Post Show Talk Mon 21 May 07

Misterman by Enda Walsh Fri 4 – Sat 5 May 7.45pm “There is a town where angels from Heaven come to visit Earth.” Misterman tells the story of Thomas Magill, a marginalised member of a small Irish town called Inishfree, who re-enacts a day in his life through a series of tape recordings. This is clearly routine for Thomas – he knows the nuances of the conversations, the timings of responses. MUSIC THEATRE WARWICK
Spring Awakening Wed 16 – Sat 19 May Following a phenomenal production of RENT, Music Theatre Warwick are back with their next show. Based on Frank Wedekind’s groundbreaking and controversial nineteenth-century play, Steven Sater and Duncan Sheik’s folk-infused rock score tells the story of teenagers discovering the inner and outer tumult of teenage sexuality. It explores the consequences of repressive sexual cultures and what happens when we fail to communicate with one another. The Goose Nest Prices TBC – see website for details
by Elizabeth Plant Thu 31 May – Sat 2 Jun 7.45pm “The friendzone is a construct, my friend.” Sam is an introverted newcomer to an eccentric student house she had to grab last minute. Every one of her new cohabitants is bursting with life, opinions, feelings and issues. Quick to quip and stumble into one another, causing continual chaos, they’re all barely keeping tensions beneath the surface. Upon inviting Sam’s crush to the house – along with her control-freak boyfriend – neither Sam, nor the others, can keep the lid on things any longer. Opinions lead to arguments, secrets come to light and substances are abused. Hormones is a play that explores the turbulence of human connection in the 21st century, comedically but unrelentingly addressing the importance of respect, honesty, and consent in all forms of relationship. Ancient Airs and Dances – Suite III Clarinet Concerto in A major K.622 Elegy Op.58 Symphony No.5 in B flat Hans-Peter Hofmann Emma Johnson
What is it about Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto that makes us love it so much? Is it the glorious melody of the famous slow movement? The sweet, playful humour of Mozart’s finale? Or the miraculous fact that Mozart’s last concerto turned out to be one of his very finest? No clarinettist is better equipped to answer that question than Emma Johnson. She’s been bringing all her charisma and warmth to this sublime music for four decades now, and she’s joined today by an orchestra of friends – a hand-picked premiership team of Europe’s finest young professional players. That’s the European Union Chamber Orchestra. Pre Concert Talk: Helen Martin Studio 6.15pm £2.50 In conversation with Emma Johnson

So who better to take us on a musical road-trip that starts in the fields and villages of Dvořák’s Bohemia and ends amidst the majestic fjords and Scandinavian forests of Norway? It’s an evening packed with favourite melodies, too: no one ever forgets the otherworldly sadness of Sibelius’s The Swan of Tuonela, while from In the Hall of the Mountain King to the radiant freshness of Morning, Grieg’s music for Peer Gynt contains some of the most hummable tunes ever composed. Nothing beats hearing this music performed live, and under their distinguished British chief conductor Jan Latham-Koenig, this fine Belgian orchestra will give it their all. Simon Wright Nicholas McCarthy Jess Gillam
Doctor musicians from all over Europe join together under the direction of conductor, Simon Wright, in aid of their chosen charity OHMI – a charity enabling music-making for the physically disabled.
Both Kodaly and Dvorák had it in their blood, and you can feel the passion – and the rhythm – in every note of these two enchanting, rarely-heard string quartets.
Marking the centenary of the end of the First World War, soloist Nicholas McCarthy, who was born without a right hand and who became the first left hand only pianist to graduate from the Royal College of Music, performs the Ravel Concerto for the left hand. He will also talk about his personal journey and the work of OHMI.
The Coull Quartet adore this music. Together with the unbuckled ardour and tender romantic poetry of Schumann’s lovely second quartet, it’ll make for a wonderfully high-spirited finish to their musical adventures in Coventry this season.
The remarkable young musician, Jess Gillam, who was the first saxophonist to win the Woodwind final of BBC Musician Of The Year, will play a transcription of the lovely Baroque C minor Oboe Concerto, accompanied by members of the orchestra. Then to the mystery of Elgar’s Variations.

OPERA OPERA NORTH
Salome Strauss Sung in German with English titles Conductor Sir Richard Armstrong Thu 3 May 7.30pm Salome Herodes Herodias Jokanaan
Jennifer Holloway Arnold Bezuyen Katarina Karneus Robert Hayward
Opera at its most extreme. Concentrated into just 100 intense minutes, there is no let-up in its power and intoxication. The latest in Opera North’s powerful concert performances in concert dress, this is the savage and bloody tale of King Herod’s step-daughter Salome. When Herod’s prisoner Jokanaan rebuffs her advances, Salome vows she will kiss him—no matter the consequences. From the seductive Dance of the Seven Veils to the explosive vocal parts, the violent sensuality of the score illustrates every moment of the story with unflinching vividness, illuminating the darkest corners of a world that has lost all moral compass. A new concert performance of a work that caused an outrage when it was first performed in 1905, and which, more than a century later, has lost none of its power to shock. ★★★★★ The Times on the 2017 concert staging of Turandot 1hr 40mins (approx.) Tue 1 May – Thu 21 Jun, Mon – Sat 12 – 9pm, Sundays and Bank Holidays 12 – 5pm FREE ENTRY John Piper (1903-1992) was a major contributor to the artistic and cultural landscape of twentieth-century Britain. Through landscape paintings and collages, photographs, abstracts, theatre designs and relief constructions, Piper expressed a sensitivity to the physical characteristics and atmosphere of his native land while drawing influence from Paris-based abstract artists including Jean Helion and Alexander Calder. In particular, the artist was drawn to English churches and monuments. In this, the first major exhibition of John Piper’s work since 2003, is presented a selection of works starting with the artist’s
20
idyllic images of rural Britain in the late 1920s and 1930s through to the depictions of bombed out churches made during the Second World War as Official War Artist, as well as his romantic landscape paintings which were a preoccupation after the 1940s. On 15 November 1940, the day after the Coventry Blitz, Piper visited Coventry and made a series of drawings of the ravaged city, in particular of the cathedral and other gutted churches. He returned to Coventry in the 1950s when Basil Spence commissioned the artist, with Patrick Reyntiens, to design
a huge stained glass window for the city’s new cathedral, which was consecrated in 1962. This exhibition, presented as Coventry prepares to become City of Culture in 2021, makes direct reference to Piper’s significant contribution to the city.

Join David on a musical journey through his hilarious and often surreal imagination, where bears live in the cupboard under the stairs, wolves are roaming the corridors at school, and trips to the moon are a regular occurrence. This latest release builds on the success of his critically-acclaimed debut album Letters Through Your Door, which had families across the UK singing (quite literally!) its praises. David’s songwriting draws from a wide range of musical influences, deftly blending folk, jazz, reggae and rock ‘n’ roll, always with an emphasis on quality and musicianship. Sarah Jane Ben Folds & A Piano Morris & Antonio Forcione Fri 25 May 7.30pm Sarah Jane Morris and Antonio Forcione have each been compared to an impressive array of musical geniuses including Janis Joplin and Tom Waits as well as Jimi Hendrix. They are both hugely respected artists in their own right. Channelling their energies together, they share audiences all over the world. As a duo they give loyal fans the chance to experience favourites afresh and attract new audiences with the strength and artistry of their unique partnership.
Taking to the stage with just a grand piano for company, cult hero Ben Folds plays tracks both classic and current. After focusing on largescale live work with orchestras in recent years, this show recalls his original solo tours where he defied sceptics by delivering high energy rock performances using only a piano. There are few musicians that can draw on such a varied and vast body of work, and at this concert don’t be surprised to hear Ben Folds five favourites followed by stripped back renditions of newer songs. The real joy of Ben Folds live comes from the man himself, with his love for the music shining through on every occasion.

She also says she’s very, very, very modest.

Our cover image features actor and writer Sukh Ojla in a dressing room before performing in her own play, Pyar Actually, one of the first professional productions staged in our temporary Goose Nest Theatre in Autumn 2017. Sukh Ojla is part of the RIFCO Associate programme, set up to provide support and guidance to British Asian artists in creating original and new work. RIFCO are an award winning touring theatre company that develops and creates vibrant, accessible and high quality theatre which reflects and celebrates the contemporary British Asian experience, and a company that Warwick Arts Centre has supported and partnered over many years. This cover image is the third and final in our series of three images featuring staff and artists behind the scenes at Warwick Arts Centre. Warwickshire based, freelance photographer, Katie McCullough has taken all of the images in the series. Katie has a passion for revealing the unseen charm of her subjects. To see more of Katie’s creatively composed but subtle photography, visit katiemcculloughphotography.co.uk See more behind the scenes images on our Instagram @warwickarts #wac_behindthescenes
