STAN’S CAFE

A Translation of Shadows Wed 22 – Fri 24 Apr 7.45pm World premiere from local heroes, Stan’s Cafe. Have you ever fallen in love with someone in a film? It’s easily done. When silent film first arrived in Japan, a narrator called a Benshi was employed to explain the movie and audiences would fall in love with them. They were the stars and they guided you through their interpretation of the screen images. Though once mighty and numerous, the dominance of the Benshi was short-lived. ‘The talkies’ eventually killed them off. But now the Benshi is back, in all his glory! Stan’s Cafe have been to Tokyo with film-maker Oliver Clark and shot Shadows, a beautiful and mysterious silent movie about a young couple in love, all that remains is for the Benshi to tell us what every shot and symbol means, who the actors are, why he loves them, why the director is terrible, when and why we should cry and laugh, what will happen in the end, why he is the greatest, most indispensable Benshi in history and why we should fall in love with him. If only it was as simple as that…

WENDY HOUSTOUN

Pact with Pointlessness Tue 28 & Wed 29 Apr 7.45pm Pact with Pointlessness is a show that asks the big questions. A barrage of old time patter and online chatter fuel the slow, slow, quick, quick, slow cycles of coming and going in an absurd piece triggered by life, death and what to do about it all. It is an escapology act of strange logic, a philosophical piece of stupidity driven by an urgent sense of futility. The seasoned Wendy Houstoun is in defiant form. Treading the boards once more in (more or less) an hour of absurd action, breakneck looping chatter and more than a few laughs. Stand up meets vaudeville eccentricity in this performance of organised chaos. Pact with Pointlessness is funny and moving in equal measure and follows hot on the heels of Houstoun’s successful 50 Acts, winner of the 2013 TMA award for achievement in dance and The Critic’s Circle National Dance Award 2014 – Outstanding Female Performance (Modern). Co-produced by Southbank Centre, Nottingham Lakeside Arts with Dance4, The Nightingale Theatre Brighton, South East Dance and Dance East, with additional support from Arts Council England.

BARELY METHODICAL TROUPE

Bromance

Presented by Crying Out Loud on behalf of Circus Evolution Tue 26 & Wed 27 May 7.30pm Meet Britain’s hottest young acrobats, Barely Methodical Troupe. This exceptionally skilled allmale trio won a Total Theatre Award at the 2014 Edinburgh Festival for their outstanding debut Bromance, and it’s easy to see why. A thrilling show, it wittily celebrates all things blokey through a series of heroic, risk-taking physical feats. With an inventive mix of flawlesslytimed acrobatics, shoulder-high balances and a stunning routine inside a spinning metal wheel the lads explore male companionship and its limits. Playful and touching, this jaw-dropping show takes British circus to new heights. Barely Methodical Troupe are outlandishly talented; Bromance, their award-winning show, is unmissable! 60mins (no interval) / Age 8+ £15 (£13) Under 26s £10

RIFCO & WATFORD PALACE THEATRE

The Deranged Marriage Written and directed by Pravesh Kumar Tue 2 – Sat 6 Jun 7.30pm Sat matinee 2.30pm The smash hit show returns for its tenth anniversary. Rishi and Sona have agreed to get married in the traditional way and the whirlwind wedding circus is on the move with or without them. Their frenzied families go into overdrive to ensure this is the most elaborate wedding ever seen but hidden amongst the show off dance numbers and sparkling saris, a forbidden love story starts to unfold. As the ice sculpture melts and missing Ladoos continue to cause mayhem, the young couple’s cold feet threaten to enter the wedding mandap. Does tradition have any value in our modern lives? Does love have anything to do with getting married? 120min (including interval) / Age 13+ Theatre Tue £15 (£13) Wed – Sat £23 (21), £21 (£19), £19 (£17) Under 26s £16 This year there’s a chance to get up close and personal – a limited number of seats are available in the Groom’s Family section. LIVE LIVE CINEMA

The Little Shop of Horrors Wed 10 – Sat 13 Jun 7.30pm Sat matinee 2.30pm Filled with a truly original style of humour, spoof and farce, Roger Corman’s 1960s cult film The Little Shop of Horrors was created over just two days. The classic black comedy focuses on a clumsy man named Seymour and his friend, a carnivorous talking plant that has a taste for human blood. In this unique and vibrant “live live” cinematic experience the classic film is screened whilst the live soundtrack is created by four performers, forced to work at break-neck pace to re-voice multiple characters in perfect lip synch whilst playing a new, original musical score and creating live Foley (sound effects). Our Audrey, Seymour, Mushnik and Dentist along with all the other characters will be leaping from piano to guitar, to bass to Door Bell, to that thing that makes the sound of footsteps. Tue 12 – Thu 14 May 7.15pm

A motor-mouthed collage of spoken word and storytelling. Tales of paranoia, young love and ultra-violence. From the desk of Christopher Brett Bailey comes a spiralling odyssey of pitch-black humour and nightmarish prose.

Early Days The war is over and the nation lies in ruins. You and your fellow survivors must build the beginnings of a new country. What are the rules you’re going to live by? And can you avoid the mistakes of the past? A piece of interactive theatre for a playing audience, Early Days (of a better nation) explores the possibilities of nationhood and democracy, drawing inspiration from the 2011 England riots, Arab Spring, Iceland’s crowdsourced constitution and the rise (and fall) of Occupy. 2hrs 30mins / Age 14+ Helen Martin Studio £12 (£10) Under 26s £9

City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra Fri 8 May 7.30pm Mozart Bruckner

Violin Concerto No.4 Symphony No.7

Conductor Violin

Andris Nelsons Baiba Skride

Anton Bruckner heard the beginning of his Seventh Symphony in a dream – played by an angel. You’ll realise why when you hear its soaring opening theme, and that’s just the beginning of one of romantic music’s most stirring spiritual odysseys: a voyage through sunlit mountain peaks and lilting waltztunes, blazing triumph and tragic depths. CBSO Music Director Andris Nelsons has built a global reputation as an interpreter of the German romantic repertoire – he’s one of the youngest conductors ever to be invited to conduct at Richard Wagner’s Bayreuth Festival – and in his final season with the CBSO, this is an unmissable opportunity to hear him in the music closest to his heart. He’s joined by his friend and fellow-Latvian, violinist Baiba Skride, in the teenage Mozart’s lovely Fourth Violin Concerto – the musical equivalent of a refreshing sorbet before Bruckner’s well-aged steak!

Jacek Kaspszyk Claire Meghnagi Hannah Pedley Andrew Rees Paul Carey Jones University of Warwick Chorus

“I embrace you, oh you millions – here’s a kiss for all the world!” Beethoven never did anything by halves – but there’s a good reason why his Ninth Symphony changed the history of music, and why every performance is a special occasion. From tragic opening to its final, overwhelming Hymn to Joy it’s one of the greatest emotional journeys in all music, and the supreme test of any conductor and orchestra. Meeting that challenge is the Warsaw Philharmonic and its energetic new music director Jacek Kaspszyk, who are joined by the University of Warwick Chorus. As a team, Kaspszyk and the Warsaw Philharmonic are already winning rave reviews in their native Poland; their current tour is a first chance to feel that electricity here in Warsaw’s twinned city of Coventry. Schubert’s playful Third Symphony raises the curtain – a delicious showcase for an orchestra and a conductor with a sense of humour, and the perfect appetiser for the tremendous musical adventure to follow.

Royal Philharmonic Orchestra Thu 21 May 7.30pm Bernstein Copland Gershwin Gershwin Bernstein Bernstein

Candide Overture Rodeo Suite Rhapsody in Blue On the Town: Three Dance Episodes West Side Story Symphonic Dances American in Paris

Conductor Piano

David Charles Abell Wayne Marshall

Life, liberty and big, big tunes! Take raw optimism, add endless confidence and a wagon full of swinging melodies, and you’ve got yourself a supersized helping of American music. And whether we’re hearing the plain-speaking cowboys of Aaron Copland’s Wild West, the high-kicking hustlers of Leonard Bernstein’s Big Apple, or Gershwin tap-dancing through Jazz-age Paris, the thrill is unmistakable. You know the tunes already, but one thing’s for sure: they sound even better performed live, all in honour of the University of Warwick’s 50th anniversary. Music ensembles from the University of Warwick will play a set from the American Songbook, and a set from the Warwick Global Songbook to open the concert. Following this, the University of Warwick Symphony Orchestra will perform alongside the RPO during their concert. Butterworth Hall £44 (£42), £40 (£38), £36 (£35), £29 (£28), £23 (£22), £15 Under 26s £12.50. Under 18s £10.50 if accompanied by a full paying or Subscription ticket holder. Under 10s £5 if accompanied by a full paying or Subscription ticket holder.

English Piano Trio plays Schubert Sun 10 May 3pm Schubert Schubert Schubert

Sonatina in G minor for violin and piano Op.posth.137 No.3 Arpeggione sonata in A minor for cello and piano Trio in B flat Op.99

If chamber music is “the music of friends”, Schubert’s is surely the friendliest of all – a twenty-something composer who lived in coffee houses and student apartments, while quietly exploring the deepest corners of the human soul. In this all-Schubert programme, the English Piano Trio – making a welcome return to Warwick after their acclaimed series of concerts last year – explores three facets of this most loveable of composers. COULL QUARTET

Grand Tour Mon 20 Apr 7.15pm Brahms Sextet in No.2 in G Op.36 Tchaikovsky Souvenir de Florence Op.70 Viola Cello

Gustav Clarkson Michal Kaznowski

Take a string quartet, add a viola and a cello, and suddenly the sun shines in. There’s just something about string sextets – something warm, something songful; no wonder that when string players want to relax, this is the music they turn to! Tonight, the Coull Quartet invite two of their greatest musical friends to celebrate the end of the season, first with the swinging tunes and deep, mellow harmonies of Brahms’s Second Sextet, and then with the unbuttoned Mediterranean fun of Tchaikovsky’s Souvenir de Florence. This is Tchaikovsky in holiday mood, and there’s no more entertaining way for six string players to let their hair down. Come and join the party! 2hrs (including interval) Helen Martin Studio £18.50 (£16.50)

Royal Opera House Live Screenings La Fille mal gardée

Guillaume Tell

Thu 7 May 7.15pm

Rossini

Frederick Ashton’s final full-length ballet is one of his most joyous creations, inspired by his love for the Suffolk countryside. It is based on an 1828 French ballet and the music was adapted by John Lanchbery from Ferdinand Hérold’s original score. La Fille mal gardée was a resounding success on its premiere in 1960 and has remained a firm favourite in The Royal Ballet’s repertory. The title translates as ‘The Wayward Daughter’.

Sung in French with English Surtitles Sun 5 Jul 2.45pm

La Fille displays some of Ashton’s most virtuosic choreography – the youthful passion of Lise and her lover, Colas, is expressed in a series of energetic pas de deux. The ballet is laced with good humour and a whirl of dancing chickens, grouchy guardians and halfwit suitors take to the stage.

The opera’s theme is liberty, as exemplified in the struggle against Austrian occupation led by the Swiss archer and patriot Guillaume Tell. Rossini’s score is one of his most outstanding, and packed with glorious arias, choruses and ensembles, as those who have heard Antonio Pappano’s admired recording – which also features Gerald Finley (Tell), John Osborn (Arnold) and Malin Byström (Mathilde) – will know. The exciting young Italian director Damiano Michieletto makes his debut with what promises to be a spectacular and thought-provoking production.

Approx 2hrs 15mins Theatre £18, £11 (restricted view) Please note this is an encore screening.

Opening with what is arguably the most exciting of all operatic overtures, Rossini’s final opera helped to lay the foundations of the genre of French grand opéra that dominated European stages throughout the mid-19th century.

MEAD GALLERY Wed 29 Apr – Sat 20 Jun 2015 Open Mon – Sat 12 noon – 9pm Closed Bank Holiday Mondays and Sundays FREE ENTRY

Imagining a University Fifty Years of The University of Warwick Art Collection The fiftieth anniversary of the University of Warwick also marks the fiftieth anniversary of its Art Collection. This exhibition examines how the forces that shaped the University also influenced the development of the collection.

The exhibition will include the work of over 100 artists including Hurvin Anderson, Claire Barclay, Jack Bush, Terry Frost, Tess Jaray, Patrick Heron, Richard Long, Melanie Manchot, Francis Morland, Yoko Ono, Eduardo Paolozzi, Fiona Rae, Ann Redpath, Lucie Rie and Andy Warhol.

Simon Patterson, Cosmic Wallpaper, 2002, digital wallpaper

The exhibition opens with the modernist utopia of the early University where the great colourfield paintings were hung like flags for the new, egalitarian age. It looks at how prints were bought to respond to ideas of a community in the 1970s, humanising the campus. In the 1980s, both the University and the collection were rewired by a new phase of development that included the creation of the Mead Gallery, while at the millennium, commissions sought to redefine public art in the context of a university.

In the twenty-first century The University Art Collection has many roles: delivering teaching, learning and research; introducing thousands of children and their families to the University; providing work experience for students and opportunities for artists; developing a sense of place and identity for the campus; initiating and extending discussions with its many audiences.

On Tue 19 May 2015, Professor Brian Cox and Dr Michael Scott will discuss the future of interdisciplinarity. What does the future hold for ArtsScience collaboration? JOSHUA CLOVER

Riot Now What We Look at When We Look at Riots Tue 9 Jun 4pm A talk by film and music critic Joshua Clover, Professor of English Literature at University of California, Davis. The riot has returned as a central feature of social antagonism. From whence has it returned, why now, and what does it want? In considering these questions, the talk will look at actual images of riots that circulate online, so common and compelling they have become a genre unto themselves. But what are we seeing in these images, beyond chaos, violence, desperation? Alongside these images, the talk will consider some classic cinematic representations, including scenes from Do The Right Thing, Children of Men, and The Hunger Games. The talk will confront the question of whether the riot’s intense visual appeal is a feature or a failing, how we might understand the new Age of Riots, and how it might unfold over the coming years. 90mins / 12+ Cinema FREE (Please note, spaces will be allocated on a first come first served basis)

“Nothing the world holds could match the love waiting for me in Mexico City” – Morrissey

Yamato Drummers of Japan

In Mexico Morrissey has always been a prophet with honour. His songs of love, loss and longing, with powerful imagery and metaphors have found a huge audience and chimed with generations raised on rancheras and mariachis and their singers who were not afraid to cross the line.

Fri 1 May 8pm

Now the love can be returned, with a band made in Mexico City reinventing Morrissey’s songs south of the border. Together they sound like a brass and accordion led combo from the smallest village with the biggest bleeding heart.

The sheer physical strength and dynamic movement of the drummers is as impressive as the music, in this visually spectacular and highly entertaining show.

In the Dead Poets’ Death Match you’ll choose the competitors and you’ll be the ones who’ll crown the winner. There can only be one. Let the wordy bloodbath begin! Studio £13.50 (£12)

Funny Business

Thu 25 Jun 8pm

Fri 26 Jun 8pm

Reginald D Hunter returns to the UK in 2015 with a brand new tour following a hugely successful year filming and performing around the world.

Jimmy’s been described as “the hardest working man in comedy”.

Butterworth Hall £25 (£23)

It’s like being the “Tallest Dwarf” or the “Healthiest Glaswegian”. Really not that big a deal.

“THIS IS COMEDY OF A RARE SCOPE.” ★★★★★ The Times

Which, let’s face facts, is not that impressive.

Funny Business is Jimmy’s brand new stand up show, after returning and selling out Warwick Arts Centre with this Gagging Order show a record five times! Come for the witty and incisive musings on the human condition; stay for the knob gags. Butterworth Hall £26

EXPERIENCE MORE

There are lots of ways to both have your say and get a little closer to what we do at Warwick Arts Centre.

Ambassadors

Thank you for donating!

A platform for meaningful conversations with people who are passionate about Warwick Arts Centre. The information and insight that is shared with us informs how we grow and develop as an organisation.

Warwick Arts Centre has charitable status as part of the University of Warwick, and if you’ve booked recently you’ll have been asked for a donation to support our artistic commissioning and pioneering education work in the local community.

Currently we have the following groups: • Family Ambassadors • Access Ambassadors • Teacher Ambassadors For more info email j.branson@warwick.ac.uk or call 024 7657 2678.

“I AM VERY LUCKY TO LIVE VERY CLOSE TO WARWICK ARTS CENTRE AND HAVE BEEN A REGULAR VISITOR OVER THE PAST FEW YEARS WITH MY 3 CHILDREN TO MANY SHOWS AND ACTIVITIES.” Family Ambassador

Here is how you have helped recently:

Transport for schools Feedback from schools tells us that the biggest barrier to them bringing children to Warwick Arts Centre for a live and inspiring arts experience is the cost of transport. We try our best to lower that barrier by subsidising the cost of coaches, particularly for those schools serving the more disadvantaged areas in Coventry and the surrounding areas. It’s a simple way of ensuring that many more children and young people can experience the excitement and stimulation of the arts. If you like what we’re doing, join us as a Supporter. Thank you for donating!

Are you a student? There are lots of ways to get involved at Warwick Arts Centre:
