COMING UP... EXCITING NEWS! WARWICK 20:20 PROJECT Image: Ellis Williams Architects
In October 2017 we will embark on a journey to refresh, renew and redevelop Warwick Arts Centre. Originally constructed in 1974, we will update the existing building and create a modern, larger space in which to continue our distinctive, artistic and creative programme.
Image: Ellis Williams Architects
The project will involve essential maintenance, plus a new build to house three digital auditoria, a large ground floor gallery to exhibit contemporary art, sculpture and photography, and a spacious new-look foyer offering a welcoming environment. The plans include open spaces for eating, drinking and socialising, and the foyer will be designed to showcase the very best in art and entertainment. We continue to remain open throughout the refurbishment with a full programme of events and shows taking place within the venue and, in 2017-18, in an onsite temporary theatre known as The Goose Nest. To find out more or to keep up-to-date with developments, visit warwickartscentre.co.uk/2020-project
THE GOOSE NEST THEATRE The Goose Nest Theatre was named following a student vote led by the Creative Warwick team at Warwick Students’ Union. Fourth Year Mathematics Student, Alex Holmes, proposed the name which won 63.5% of the vote. Opening in October 2017 and with seating for 300, The Goose Nest Theatre will be located next to the Helen Martin Studio and will host student society performances, as well as professional theatre, comedy and family shows.

Celebration
From multi award-winning company Barrel Organ, Anyone’s Guess How We Got Here is a road-trip. A haunted-house. A bedtime story. A photo-album. An 80s fantasy film. A demolition project. A riot.
The world’s been getting us down lately. It feels like everything is slowly unravelling.
In ten years’ time, we discover a way to store memories externally. Molly watches thousands of other people’s pasts at work every day. Billie decides to sell just one clip. Gloria Grahame: Femme Fatale Film Noir Icon PG Sat 25 Nov 11am – 3.30pm (including lunch break) For a time embodying the notion of the Femme Fatale, the alluring Gloria Grahame (1923–1981) will be forever remembered for her scintillating performances in films like Crossfire (1947), In a Lonely Place (1949) and the Oscar-winning Bad and the Beautiful (1952). This talk by Adrian Wootton OBE, coincides with a new Grahame biopic starring Annette Bening, adapted from the book Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool. The life and career of Jack Nicholson 12A Julie Wright, lecturer in Film Studies at the University of Warwick, provides an insight into the life and career of Jack Nicholson. An actor, director, writer and producer, Jack Nicholson was first given the opportunity to work in Hollywood by Roger Corman in the 1960s before career-making roles in Five Easy Pieces, Chinatown and his Oscar-winning performance in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. If Nicholson defined the 70s anti-hero, by the 80s and 90s he had become Hollywood royalty, admired for his acting abilities and widely liked for his wicked personality. Audiences have watched this icon, now 80, age on and off-screen, and Something’s Gotta Give is an especially poignant look at a male Lothario coming to terms with his advancing years. The day includes a complete screening of Something’s Gotta Give. Date to be announce in September, please see warwickartscentre.co.uk for details Cinema £15 (£12.50)

British art of the 1960s is noted for its bold, artificial colour, alluring surfaces and capricious shapes and forms, yet these exuberant qualities are often underpinned by a strong sense of order, founded on repetition, sequence and symmetry. Kaleidoscope looks across media and movements – from the mind-bending surfaces of Op Art, the flattened repetition of Pop, the mathematical order of Constructivism, and the sequential

The Hallé Thu 2 Nov 7.30pm
St Petersburg Symphony Orchestra Sun 15 Oct 7.30pm Mussorgsky Rachmaninov Rimsky-Korsakov
Night on a Bare Mountain Piano Concerto No.4 Scheherazade
Conductor Piano
Alexander Dmitriev Peter Donohoe
Until you’ve heard Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade played live by a genuine Russian Orchestra you haven’t really heard it at all. The St Petersburg Symphony Orchestra is the real thing, its impassioned strings, characterful woodwind and fiery brass section will make Rimsky-Korsakov’s musical tales blaze with colour and emotion. First, though, experience the spine-tingling thrills of Mussorgsky’s Halloween shocker Night on a Bare Mountain – and hear East meet West, as the great British piano virtuoso Peter Donohoe joins the St Petersburgers in Rachmaninov’s dazzling Fourth Concerto. It’s not as famous as the other Rachmaninov concertos, but if you haven’t heard it before, you’re in for a fabulous surprise: it’s packed with big, memorable melodies, edge-of-the seat drama and, of course, truly world-class piano playing. Pre-concert Talk: Helen Martin Studio 6.15pm £2.50 In conversation with Peter Donohoe 30
Ravel Debussy Ravel Elgar
Rapsodie espagnole Rhapsody for Clarinet & Orchestra Boléro Enigma Variations
Conductor Clarinet
Sir Mark Elder Sergio Castelló López
“I go all over the world to work with marvellous orchestras” says Sir Mark Elder, “yet still I miss the Hallé, what we have together. They know the way I work, they play so beautifully, they retain their curiosity… You can take musical risks.” After 17 years together, Elder and his Manchester orchestra are one of the great musical partnerships of our time. But hear for yourself, in a concert that could have been designed to show a great orchestra at the top of its game. Ravel’s Boléro and the flamboyant Rapsodie espagnole are all about colour (though the tunes certainly stick in your head too!), while Debussy’s lovely Rhapsody makes a beautiful showcase for the Hallé’s stunning young principal clarinet Sergio Castelló López. As for Elgar’s Enigma Variations – well, the piece that gave the world Nimrod hardly needs introduction, and Elder and the Hallé have this music in their blood. Pre-concert Talk: Helen Martin Studio 6.15pm £2.50 In conversation with Sir Mark Elder
Armonico Consort Thu 7 Dec 7.30pm Handel
Messiah
Director Christopher Monks Soprano Elin Manahan Thomas Countertenor William Towers Tenor Nathan Vale Bass Sir Willard White
City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra Fri 17 Nov 7.30pm Mozart The Magic Flute Overture Chopin Piano Concerto No.2 Messiaen Un Sourire Debussy La Mer Conductor Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla Piano Rafal Blechacz Simon Rattle, Sakari Oramo, Andris Nelsons... the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra has made something of a habit of finding the most inspiring conductors of their generation. And if the critics are to be believed, Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla might just be the most exciting yet, with The Guardian describing her as “spellbinding, bewitching”.
“I think I did see all Heaven before me, and the great God Himself” declared George Frederic Handel, as he composed his Messiah. But you don’t need to be a believer to be moved by the power of this most beloved of all sacred masterpieces. More than just an oratorio, it’s practically a national institution and with melodies like Ev’ry Valley, For Unto Us a Child is Born, The Trumpet Shall Sound, I Know That My Redeemer Liveth and of course Hallelujah! it has been part of the soundtrack of our lives since the day it was first performed in April 1742. Nearly three centuries later, no British Christmas is complete without it. This performance by the internationally acclaimed period instrument ensemble Armonico Consort, under its artistic director Christopher Monks, gets back to the style of performance Handel himself would have known – you’ll never hear a fresher or more joyful Messiah.
The freshness and optimism of her interpretations have energised audiences in Birmingham, and this imaginatively-devised concert gives a wonderful example of what she has to offer – from the classicism and wit with which she approaches her beloved Mozart to her lucid, emotionally charged way with 20th century music, in Messiaen’s exquisite but rarely played Un Sourire (A Smile). Anchoring the programme are two romantic classics in which she’ll be able to pour out her heart – Chopin’s dreamy Second Piano Concerto, with Polish pianist Rafal Blechacz, and an early centenary tribute to Claude Debussy: the ravishing La Mer. Pre-concert Talk: Helen Martin Studio 6.15pm £2.50 In conversation with Mirga Grazinyte-Tyla 31

An extraordinary fusion of sublime melody, vocal challenge, and dramatic power, Norma examines an ageless and archetypal situation: a powerful woman compromises her ideals for love, only to find herself betrayed by her lover. Our cover photograph features Deputy Technical Stage Manager Adam Cardew and is the first in a series of three images featuring staff and artists behind the scenes at Warwick Arts Centre. Adam has worked as part of our technical team for over 30 years, starting when he was 16 years old. His job involves a variety of technical duties including sound, lighting, rigging and projection. Over the years Adam has seen many changes to Warwick Arts Centre and is looking forward to the Warwick 20:20 Project. Warwickshire based, freelance photographer, Katie McCullough has taken all of the images in the series. Katie has a passion for revealing the unseen charm of her subjects. To see more of Katie’s creatively composed but subtle photography, visit katiemcculloughphotography.co.uk See more behind the scenes images on our Instagram @warwickarts #wac_behindthescenes
