intro • news in brief • g.u.m. clinic

Welcome to The Bubble – our fortnightly guide to everything that’s going on in your Union. You’ll find copies delivered to halls, around campus and in both the Warwick SU buildings to read at your leisure! After a great first two weeks at Warwick, Week 3 gives you the chance to have your say on Union Democracy during the Autumn Elections, where you can elect the members of our all-new Student Council. We are also launching our first ever Social Enterprise Project, where anyone can propose an idea which could receive 1000s of pounds’ worth of funding! The week concludes with one of the SU’s most-loved events: Skool Dayz. Week 4 starts with the inaugural meeting of Student Council, and ends with the Halloween Ball 2012 - I hope to see you there! As always, feel free to get in touch or come and say hello to any of the Sabb team in the SUHQ building. Nick Swain WARWICK SU PRESIDENT

news in brief international student association (ISA) The International Student Association is a new committee which aims to increase engagement, participation and representation of non-UK students within the Students’ Union. As with the PGA, its role will be to pass resolutions on issues directly affecting international students at Warwick, and bring these to both Student Council and All Student Meetings. Look out for more information about our first meeting of the year coming soon, in which we’ll electing councillors to represent you for the year!

The Postgraduate Association is our one-stop shop for all things related to postgrad representation here at the SU. The committee is made up of the Postgraduate Officer, the 4 elected Faculty Representatives, and a PGR rep and Social Secretary who will be elected at the first meeting. Our regular meetings will be open to all postgraduate students, and we want as many of you to come along as possible. We will be discussing both academic and non-academic issues, and hopefully bringing policy along to All Student Meetings so that we can enact change and make a real difference to the lives of postgrad students.

chaplaincy lecture

wed week 3

The Chaplaincy has invited Sir Ghillean Prance to give a lecture entitled Towards Global Sustainability: a Faith perspective. Sir Ghillean is a leading Botanist and was the director of the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew. The talk takes place on Wednesday 17th October (Week 3) - for more information and to sign up, visit the University website now: www2.warwick.ac.uk/newsandevents/events/distinguishedlecture

free screening: batman begins mon week 4 “Why do we fall down, Master Wayne…?” – presumably so that we can pick ourselves up again and see how Christopher Nolan’s acclaimed Dark Knight trilogy all began at this free screening in L3, courtesy of Warwick Student Cinema and KPMG. Cape and cowl gets donned at 7:30pm.

tuesday week 4 In association with the local county health service, we bring G.U.M. (Genito-Urinary Medicine) Clinics to the SU twice a term. These are completely free and confidential, and a great way to get yourself checked out for sexually-transmitted infections, whether you’ve had unprotected sex recently or just want to get a clean bill of health. The first clinic of term will take place in CR2 on Thursday 23rd October (Week 2) – it’s non-invasive and there’s no need to make an appointment. Just turn up on the day and you’ll be seen! If you have any questions, email welfare@warwicksu.com

autumn elections 2012

Week 3 will see the Students’ Union awash in a tide of orange publicity and the return of a certain cheekylooking hamster as we urge you to cast your vote in the 2012 Autumn Elections. So, what’s it all about? Your elected representatives can make a big difference. Do you want to risk the development of your student experience to just anyone? The best way to help enact the change that you want to see is by electing the best people to represent your views. Following on from last year’s Democracy Review, we are currently electing Postgraduate Faculty Representatives to join the Postgrad Association, together with Student Council Councillors from all year groups. The election of Undergraduate Faculty Representatives occurs during the Officer Elections in Term 2. Student Council meets five times a year and acts as the overseer of policy implementation here at the SU, making sure that things get done by your elected Officer Team. They also update policies due for renewal, as well as proposing policy at All Student Meetings. If you have an interest in what your Union does and how we go about putting this into action, it’s really important that you have your say!

DON'T FORGET TO VOTE Nominations are available to view online now - don’t forget that the University recognises Warwick SU as the official voice of students, so the more of you who vote, the bigger the mandate and the stronger our collective voice is! Voting opens on Tuesday Week 3 (16th October) via WWW.WARWICKSU.COM/VOTE

freshers 2012

freshers 2012

WE CAME, WE SAW, WE CONQUERED! Well! As expected from the feverish advance buzz, Freshers Fortnight 2012 turned out to be one of the biggest and best to date. Following a truly hectic Arrivals Weekend which saw thousands of you converge on the Freshers Fair before Ministry of Sound rinsed the decks into a right old lather at the Unitrash Welcome Parties, things got off to a thoroughly messy start at a sell-out Paint Party on the first night of term. From here, mayhem aplenty ensued at Avalanche, followed by two weeks of packed-out Pop! madness on Wednesday and 1400 of you having it very large indeed to Zane Lowe. Tinchy Stryder rocked the house on Saturday of Week 1, before our very own Comedy Society brought the laughs to CR2. Congratulations are due to Rootes, who were crowned Hall Wars Champions 2012 after a hard-fought contest on Monday of Week 2 – there was also snappy dress up the wazoo at the Prohibition-era Freshers Party, a night of thoroughly thumping tunes upstairs at Crash and, finally, Tony Lee’s unforgettable XXX-rated hypnotism show. We hope you had as much fun at the various different events as we did putting them on! Now that the hectic pace of the first few weeks has died down, we hope you’ve all settled in to the swing of things here – don’t forget that if you’re ever unsure of anything, experiencing problems or just need someone to talk to, our Student Advice Team are based on the top floor of SUHQ, as are your Sabbatical Officer Team. As always, all info relating to the SU can be found on our website – www.warwicksu.com – or you can email enquiries@warwicksu.com with any questions you may have and we’ll get back to you as quickly as possible.

I love the 90s & early 00s - don your shirt and tie for a night of naughty nostalgia

For those of you who missed it last year, The Exchange is a Bar FTSE game that turns the Copper Rooms bar into a stock exchange for the evening! We will “float” products on the “market”, which will be displayed on screens around the venue. Drinks prices will rise and fall through the night depending on demand, just like on the real stock exchange - so, if eveyone is buying Carlsberg, Grolsch will drop in price... so people start buying Grolsch and the price goes back up and Carlsberg falls! Make sure you follow @warwicksuents on Twitter for insider tips on upcoming deals throughout the night, and keep your eyes open for periodic market crashes when ALL drinks prices plummet simultaneously!
