Seen the news headlines about huge increases in tuition fees and big cuts to Higher Education? The Browne Review recommended that the government remove the cap on tuition fees, meaning that they could rise to £7000 or more for home/EU Students. A week later, the Comprehensive Spending Review announced cuts of up to 75% to the money the government provides for teaching in Universities. Essentially, the government has removed all the funding for the teaching of Social Science and Arts/Humanities subjects. At the same time, fees for International Students continue to rise year by year. Join us at the NUS-UCU National Demonstration as Warwick SU puts its foot down. On the 10th November in Central London, we’ll be joining tens of thousands of other students from around the country in marching against cuts and higher fees. news in brief union council The first Council meeting of the year was held on 25th October with a great attendance. New policy was passed on Student Safety, the By-Laws were voted in and various policies were renewed. A summary of the meeting and full minutes are available online at www.warwicksu.com.

hall society elections Nominations are opening Wednesday 3rd November for this year’s Hall Society execs. If you want to get involved in organising competitions and events between your hall and others, or want to see more socials between kitchens and create a bit of community atmosphere, then why not nominate yourself?
looking for a house? If you’ve already started finding people to live with next year, you’re a step ahead of the game. When it comes to thinking about living arrangements for next year, just RELAX. Year on year, rumours and myths persuade students to sign contracts earlier than is necessary. Don’t get scaremongered into thinking that all the good houses go early, or that there won’t be any houses left past the end of January. Houses constantly flow onto the market, landlords make a point of trying to get rid of their worst properties first, and friendships change throughout the year. You shouldn’t be organising your house until, at the very earliest, the beginning of Term 2. For advice relating to house-hunting, contracts, or second-year living arrangements in general, contact our Student Advice Centre at advice@warwicksu.com.
what is hate crime? Hate Crime is any perceived offensive, discriminatory or victimising remark or behaviour targeting a particular aspect of someone’s identity. By any other name, it’s bullying. Warwick SU prides itself in having a Hate Crime Reporting centre (the Welfare Officer’s office in SUHQ). If you feel you’ve been unfairly treated by academics, by the public, or by your peers, contact your Welfare Officer, Leo Boe, on welfare@warwicksu.com for confidential advice and information, or feel free to pop by his office. freshers fortnight Well! This year’s Freshers Fortnight proved a truly memorable affair with all sorts of notable goings-on here at the SU. The Freshers Fair was our biggest to date, and we hope you were able to net loads of freebies including Domino’s pizza! Thousands of you joined our numerous sports clubs, societies and volunteering initiatives over the first two weeks of term - be sure to make the most of them during your time here at Uni, as it really will enrich the entire experience. If you missed out, don’t forget that you can always join online at www.warwicksu.com it’s never too late to get involved! We also held another incredibly successful book sale in Week 2, all the proceeds from which went right back to you, the students. The Freshers Party saw the Atrium turned into a spectacular Big Top with all manner of sights and sounds, before Example gave the place a right seeing-to with his banging headline set. Elsewhere, Sub Focus, Zane Lowe and RSS gave huge props to the Warwick massive, with packed houses and good times duly following suit at Massive Monday, Pop!, Pressure, O.M.G and Skool Dayz. On the specialist side, Young Guns rocked Crash to the ground, while Idioteque quickly established itself as an essential addition to the programme. However, now that Freshers is over, it doesn’t mean the fun has to stop - we run hundreds of different events throughout the year, so make sure you keep up to date by visiting www.warwicksu.com/events. policy of the fortnight policy 683 - tv licenses Have you been plagued by letters from the TV Licensing Agency even though you have no intention of getting a TV? In 2008, Union Council passed policy mandating the Welfare Officer and Environmental Campaigns Officer to lobby the TV Licensing Agency to:
