intro • news in brief • relax
the next two weeks see pride and rAg running a variety of campaignrelated, fundraising-focused events. pride Week will focus on raising awareness of the diversity and difficulties, of the lgbtuA+ community, whilst also engaging with students about tolerance and the celebration of difference. by far the craziest in Warwick’s calendar, Week 8 is rAg Week. for details of all the shenanigans, check out the third page. finally throughout the rest of this term, the su will be running our housing campaign ‘relAX’. every year freshers rush to get their housing sorted before the end of term 1. not ideal. the truth is that statements like ‘all the good houses go first’ and ‘there aren’t enough houses in leam’ are completely false. you simply don’t have to rush - houses constantly come onto the market, and, in fact, landlords try to get rid of their crap properties first! it really is worth the wait. remember, regardless of when you decide to house-hunt, make sure you run contracts by our expert housing advisors. After all, landlords do take students for a ride! if you have any questions about housing for next year, contact advice@warwicksu.com. leo boe
news in brief movember update Half a month in and your Sabbatical Officers, Union staff (men) and plenty of clubs and societies are starting to proudly sport (sprout) their Mos. All in aid of raising awareness of men’s health issues and money for prostate cancer, watch out for updates and images at www.warwicksu.com/movember over the next couple of weeks whilst keeping your eyes out for some hilarious pictures in The Dirty Duck - head there now if you’re taking part and get your photograph taken.
warwick international development summit 2010 This month hosts the inaugural Warwick International Development Summit (WIDS) on the 19th - 21st November 2010. The theme of this year’s summit is ‘Resources, Crisis and Conflict - facing up to the new decade’. There will be a range of exciting and motivational speakers from UNICEF, the WTO and the World Bank to name a few. The summit aims to explore the challenges our globe faces as we enter a new decade, testing our speakers and panellists to come up with solutions and areas for future improvement. The weekend kicks off with an introductory talk and drinks reception on the evening of the 19th, which all students are welcome to attend. To be a part of it, visit our website www.wids.org.uk to purchase tickets and find out more.
ignis feat. latin heat IGNIS, the smooth and sexy RnB night brought to you by One World Week, is now hooking up with Latin Heat to bring you the hottest night of the year! In true OWW fashion we will be showcasing some of your favourite societies (Breakdance, Bollywood Dance, ACS, Streetvibe and Eqho) as well as performances from the Salsa and Capoeira Societies. All this for just £3 (members) / £4 (non-members)! Don’t forget to don your finest Black n Gold outfit, and come get your swagger on, OWW style. Bhangra, Hip-Hop, RnB, Reggaeton and Latin beats will keep your booty shaking until the wee hours in The Copper Rooms, Saturday 20th November 2010, from 9pm till 2am!
First years are probably thinking about houses and housemates for second year. Relax! The two points to remember are:
○ Signing contracts early isn’t worthwhile. Wait. Not all
○
good houses go first, and not all houses go entirely. Remember that houses pop up throughout the year.
If you have questions about landlords, location, agents, or contracts come to SUHQ to speak to our housing experts in the Student Advice Centre (advice@warwicksu.com). If anyone can help you, they can - they’ve been doing this for years!
week 7: pride week
week Pride, n. "A sense of one's own proper dignity or value; self-respect"
Homophobia Feat. performances from
BEATS & BARS WARWICK GLEE ROCKSOC OFFBEAT Week 7 sees Warwick's annual pride Week take place. pride is about far more than rainbow flags and a glittery veneer (not that we don't love rainbows and glitter). it is a celebration of the diverse voices, behaviours and histories of everyone in the lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, undefined and Asexual community at Warwick and all over the world. however, that doesn't mean you have to be lgbtuA to get involved with and enjoy pride Week. the week is a chance to learn, to engage, and to ask questions about unfamiliar or quirky issues. from trans(gender) identity, the interface of faith and queerness, to representations in the media and the intense but glorious world of liberation activism there is something for everyone to get involved with. A schedule of specific events will be available and distributed during Week 7, when you can also search for ‘Warwick pride Week 2010’ on facebook. in the meantime if you have any questions or want to get more involved email lgbtuapluscampaigns@warwicksu.com And finally, remember to be proud of who you are all year round, not just for this one week. but let's really celebrate ourselves this week, we deserve it.
www.warwickpride.org
As part of Pride Week, Love Music Hate Homophobia will be taking place in the Union on Tuesday evening of Week 7. This event is a sister organisation of Unite Against Fascism and aims to combat all forms of discrimination, oppression and bigotry by uniting folks through music. With live music and DJ sets ranging from acoustic to indie to rock, you'd be silly to miss out. You don't have to be gay to hate homophobia. You don't have to use your fists to fight fascism. Come along, enjoy some CHOONS, be part of an incredible campaign.

And can you mimic that ridiculous quacking noise from Whigfield’s Saturday Night without a hint of irony? if so, wang that old school uniform on and join us for a celebration of all that was great about the 90s and early noughties (plus, you know, rubbish like shania twain and las ketchup). if you’re too cool for school, zip upstairs where you’ll be treated to a display of bouncing oldskool hip-hop beats. Altogether now! ‘boom, shake, shake, shake the room!’ (etc etc)…

PLAN FOR THE YEAR:
PLAN FOR THE YEAR:
‘My aim for this year is to always have something on the go, because issues affecting the LGBTUA+/Queer community shouldn’t just be highlighted during Pride Week. The main focus for next term will be LGBT History Month in February, but ongoing campaigns such as Donation Not Discrimination will definitely remain a constant priority.‘
‘Welfare Committee runs campaigns throughout the year on a whole range of issues that affect students. Look out for the RELAX housing campaign across campus towards the end of this term. I’m always keen for new ideas so if there’s an issue that you want to highlight then I’d love to hear from you. It’s your union - get involved!’
