intro • news in brief • idioteque competition

Welcome Back! Hopefully everyone had a great Christmas and New Year. At Warwick SU, we’ve been busy preparing for the next term and the miscellany of events it’s going to bring. First off, our annual Housing Day on Wednesday Week 1. If you’re looking for off-campus accommodation next year, pop in for a whole load of useful information from our specialised advice team. Friday Week 2 sees the opening of nominations for Officer Elections. Whether you want to stand for one of the full-time Sabbatical Officer posts or fancy tackling one of the part time officer positions alongside your studies, find out more and how to stand at warwicksu.com/elections. Over the Christmas break we’ve made some changes to our Ents line-up following feedback from you! The big news here is that Spank the Monkey returns with Top Banana every Friday of term. £3 entry and £1 selected drinks makes it a great night that’s easy on the wallet. We’ve also teamed up with Uni Express to offer those of you who live in Leam transport before and after the event! Pop! is, of course, still running every Wednesday, and Saturday sees a mix of events including Pressure and Skool Dayz for your entertainment! Time for some Monkey Business! leisure rules! Looking for somewhere to just go and slob out during the day? Well, look no further! Pop up to The Terrace Bar between 12pm - 4pm each day where you can relax with free wi-fi, newspapers, board games, snacks and more. Leisure rules every day at The Terrace Bar!

re-freshers fair The Re-Freshers Fair is your opportunity to join that club or society you wished you had joined last term but didn’t! Is there something you’ve heard your hallmates or coursemates raving about that you want to join? Or have you ended up with nothing to do other than coursework and want to try something new? This is your chance to have a second peek at the clubs and societies we have on offer and find something you’ll love! Head over to the Atrium on Thursday Week 1 between 10am and 4pm.

bus stop Why wait out in the cold? The Terrace Bar is now the warmest bus stop on campus, offering you drinks deals and bar snacks as a hearty alternative to standing looking miserable waiting for the 12 or U1. Join us every Monday to Friday, from 4pm - 9pm.

COMPETITION Think you’re a bit of a smarty-pants when it comes to indie music? Those good folk over at RISE have put up some gift vouchers to spend in their fine store for one lucky winner who can name the most icons used on our awesome Idioteque poster. All you need to do is name the artist which corresponds to each image, simple as that! Email your answers to ents@warwicksu.com and we’ll collate the winning entries to enter into the prize draw!

In Week 10 last term we asked you to RANT about anything and everything you wanted to see change in your Union, however big or small. You ranted, we listened and over the holidays we made some of the changes you wanted to see…

GOT SOMETHING TO SAY...? “ Union computers are too slow.”

“ SU prices are too high! ”

We Agree! We’ve bought a load of new ones! If you’re on a sports club or society exec you’ll find brand new machines awaiting you in the Soc & Sports Room - enjoy!

The SU isn’t here to make a profit; any surplus from our commercial actives gets invested straight back into services for you, including the Student Advice Centre, Sports Clubs and Societies and all our other representation systems.

“ I want to RANT

The recent VAT increase has had very little effect on the prices at Warwick SU compared to our competitors. We’ve unfortunately had to increase the price of drinks, but by only 5p each, and there’s been no increase in the price of food or any of our meal deals!

more often!”

Well, now you can. We’ve launched our feedback service ‘Have Your Say’ with comment cards in outlets and responses in the Atrium and Bubble. More opportunities are coming soon on the website! You can email us your feedback 24/7 on feedback@warwicksu.com.

It’s the first time in three years that drinks prices have increased at all - in fact we dropped them by 10% at the start of the year in The Copper Rooms.

“the Atrium does not feel student-y enough...” We’ve now bought lots of sofas and there’s plenty of new things going up on the walls - you can read our feedback responses, get news from our new ‘have you heard’ boards and find out more about everything your Union has to offer. We’re also promoting the Atrium to societies and clubs to use as an indoor ‘Piazza’ for performances and showcases of what they do. The Indoor Markets will be back and we’ll be hosting different events throughout the term. If you are interested in booking the Atrium for club or society events, please contact the SU’s Central Admin Department by emailing admin@warwicksu.com.

changes to the entertainment programme

As a result of your feedback during the Ents survey and Rant Week, we’re making some major changes to this term’s programme of entertainment here at the Union. Our survey revealed Mondays are among the least popular nights to go out, and so Manic Mondays are now no more. Sadface! However, you stated emphatically that you wanted cheaper drinks on your big night out, and so we are now moving all of the existing £1 drinks offers to Fridays. Huzzah! Indeed, perhaps the biggest change will be the return of that perennial Warwick favourite TOP BANANA on a Friday night, revamped and rebooted for a new generation. Despite a great deal of positive feedback on O.M.G, your comments suggested that you wanted a wider variety of music, a much stronger social atmosphere, cheaper drinks and reduced entry price. Fridays will therefore be £3 in, with selected drinks just £1 all night at the bar plus regular themed events with all manner of added extras. Music-wise, former Top B DJs Chris Carter and Tom Skelhon will be returning to the helm, bashing out an eclectic mix of current chart hits together with your favourite commercial RnB, hip-hop, pop, dance, rock, indie, drum’n’bass and dubstep anthems. Upstairs in Room 2 you can get down and dirty to the sounds of RnB, grime, garage and UK Funky. ’Ead, shoulders, kneez and toez! Keep your eyes open for that cheeky monkey Spank running around causing havoc, and those of you on Facebook may just catch him taking part in a little monkey business over the next term… In response to feedback from regular attendees, Crash will be moving to Saturday nights, three times a term. Rocksoc and Bandsoc will continue to hold their traditional pre-event social in Room 2, bringing you the best of live student talent before the event kicks off at 10pm. Our two most popular events, Skool Dayz and Pop!, will remain unchanged. Look out too for some major changes coming to The Terrace Bar over the coming weeks as we’ll be unveiling a brand new programme of evening entertainment and some big changes during the daytime! You spoke, we listened. Our response now is simple: those who asked for a better atmosphere in the Union, the only person who can make that happen is YOU. See you at Top B!

warwick inspire Are you interested in inspiring young people to reach Higher Education? The Warwick SU Inspire scheme takes Warwick Students into local schools where they talk about their life as a student at Warwick, and chat with pupils about their perceptions of the University experience. Participants will have the chance to motivate the next generation of University students, many of whom may not have considered Higher Education as an option. For information and to get involved contact your Education Officer, Sean Ruston, by emailing education@warwicksu.com or coming to see him in his office in SUHQ.

policy of the fortnight policy 594: specialist food provision on campus This policy, passed in 2006, mandates your Union to offer vegetarian and vegan options across all the outlets and to label them accordingly. From burritos and beanburgers to salads and ciabattas, we’re proud to fulfil this policy and like to go the extra mile. If you’ve got any allergies or intolerances (wheat, dairy etc.) then just ask at the bar and see what the chefs are able to make to your needs - they’ll do their best to help.

we say... Absolutely any student can run in the Autumn Elections to be on Council and we do our best to advertise that fact. If you don’t run and don’t vote then you won’t get people who represent your views. Why not get involved in the Officer Elections and help your Union whilst getting a great career boost.
