intro • news in brief • rag quiz

Well, with the SU still buzzing after an eventful elections period, I can’t wait for all of the vibrant events coming up in Weeks 7 and 8, which will include fascinating awarenessraising talks, films, world record attempts and more! Go Green Week in Week 7 will give you the chance to find out how you can help tackle climate change as a student through a range of intellectual discussions and awesome events. Mental Health Awareness Week and the first half of Fairtrade Fortnight in Week 8 promise to host brilliant talks, screenings, performances and debates to raise awareness about one of the most misunderstood and misconceived facets of the 21st Century. Come along to challenge your own perceptions! It’s not black and white when it comes to these complex topics. Finally, Week 8 will also see the return of The Big 5, a survey Warwick SU does to find out what YOU want from the SU and how YOU want it to change. We need as many of you to fill it out as possible - the more responses, the more able we are to make the right changes for you guys. This is your Union, after all – let us know what you think! Leo Bøe WELFARE OFFICER

news in brief UNICEF entertAID On Tuesday of Week 7, Warwick UNICEF on Campus invites you to attend ENTERTAID - the annual charity concert that aims to raise awareness of children’s rights. With all proceeds going towards UNICEF UK’s ‘Put It Right’ campaign, this year’s performers include our very own Warwick bands and dance societies. Don’t miss out!

be your own boss 2011 (feat. Raef Bjayou) Warwick Entrepreneurs brings Dragon’s Den to campus. Five finalists will present business ideas to a panel of judges including Raef Bjayou (formerly starred in BBC’s The Apprentice), Accenture and others with an aim of winning £1500 (the runner-up wins £500). The evening will be a classy affair with Ramphal full of businesses founded at Warwick (or by Warwick students). The event itself, as well as including an intense competition, will see many societies performing and will end with a Middle Eastern dinner available to all. There will be time to network with the judges before the event. This will be one of the events to remember for 2011. Will you be there to see Warwick students compete for £2000? (Suits/dresses optional.)

big debate

thursday week 7

The Warwick Debating Union will offer another lively debate on a hot topic here in the Atrium during Week 7, as they pose the question: ‘Should Britain be involved with the arms trade?’ As always, there’ll be guest panellists and plenty of feverish discussion on one of the burning issues which affect the modern world – entry is free, and everyone is welcome to come and participate regardless of where they sit on the motion!

battle of the bands At the time of writing we’ve already seen Hoon Army and Fly By Night romp to victory in their respective heats, with Apache Death Squad and To Plant A Seed gearing up for the semi-final. Bandsoc’s annual tournament now continues in earnest during Weeks 7 & 8 with the penultimate and final heats before the play-offs begin. Expect a tasty feast of musical talent up onstage as Warwick’s student bands limber up for their shot at the Grand Final!

rag quiz Good news for those of you looking for a way to wile away the start of the week: RAG’s weekly charity quiz now has a new home in The Mighty Duck on Monday nights. As always, feel free to come along and take on your fellow students on a wide range of trivia questions. There are top prizes to be won, including sweets and drinks, along with your pride! And don’t forget, all the proceeds go to sweet, sweet charidee!

the big five 2011

THE BIG

WWW.WARWICKSU.COM/THEBIGFIVE At Warwick SU, we are committed to giving you best possible experience whilst at University. We want to make sure that we are doing the best we can for all our students, but to do this we need you to tell us what the Union does well, and what we could make better. In order to ensure we get the whole picture, we are looking at 5 key areas. Our Big 5 are: Service

Involvement

Engagement

Representation

The Future

The Big 5 is Warwick SU’s massive annual survey, carried out as part of SUEI: the National Students’ Union Evaluation Initiative. Our aim is to poll as many members of the student body as possible to find out exactly what you think of your Union – what we’re doing right, what we can improve, and how we can better suit your needs during your time here at Warwick. Love The Bread Oven and The Dirty Duck but feel there’s something they’re not offering? Too much RnB in The Copper Rooms? Not enough RnB in The Copper Rooms? (Trust us, we get this one all the time…) This is your chance to have your say on all aspects of the Union’s operations, from clubs & societies and food & beverage outlets to welfare, democracy and entertainments. This is YOUR Union, and it can only work as you want it to through your input, engagement and feedback. You need to fill in this questionnaire – it only takes a few minutes but the results really do make a difference to you and everyone else. If you’ve ever praised, griped or whinged about something we’re doing, now’s your chance to say so. All the results are reviewed by the Sabbatical and Management teams here at the Union, and we will do our best to act on your feedback wherever possible. The survey will be up online throughout Week 8 at www.warwicksu.com/thebig5 – and paper copies will be available on the buses and in the Atrium. Make sure you take a few minutes to log on/write up and fill out the survey as your feedback really is important to us. Get clicking and ticking!

get your hands on some top prizes! As an added incentive, there’ll be top prizes up for grabs from entries drawn at random. Here’s a selection of what you can get your hands on:

ultimate lifestyle packages: THE ULTIMATE LIFESTYLE PACKAGE

Grab a deluxe gift box for 2, including make-over and photoshoot, 8 paintball tickets, Laugh passes and Guestlisting to clubs across the UK.

superdry hoodies: Get your hands on one of three superb Superdry hoodies* courtesy of your local Superdry Store in Leamington Spa. *Hoodies may differ from those depicted.

moet and chandon champagne: Celebrate your winning ways with a bottle of Moet and Chandon Champagne, courtesy of Think Bubble.

go green week • fair trade fortnight • mental health awareness week

Warwick SU Campaigns and People & Planet are thrilled to be launching Go Green Week in Week 7.

Fairtrade Fortnight is going to hit Warwick and the rest of the world in Weeks 8 & 9!

This will be the largest student-run week of action and awareness-raising on climate change in the world. This year’s Go Green Week has been very much themed around what you can do to make a difference. 2012 will be a critical year in mankind’s response to climate change - you owe it to yourself to sit up and pay attention!

This year’s theme is ‘SHOW OFF YOUR LABEL’: being LOUD AND PROUD about Fairtrade, and being a Fairtrade University.

On Monday we have some really wacky inventions out on the piazza - you won’t be able to miss the bike-powered sound-system cycling around campus or the bike-powered smoothie maker! The highlight of Tuesday’s travel-themed day will be a poetry-slam feat. the much acclaimed Danny Chivers. Wednesday sees numerous events tackling the massive problems surrounding food wastage. We are lucky enough to be joined by Mark Lynas on Thursday evening, author of some of the best-selling climate change books in the world. Come and learn from those responsible for occupying airport runways across the country when Plane Stupid will be holding a workshop with Seeds for Change on Friday afternoon. This is only a snapshot of what we’ve organized - see the SU website for full event details! And remember… GO GREEN!

○○ a ‘Chocolate Party’ ○○ FREE educational film screenings in The Mighty

Look forward to a plethora of events throughout the fortnight including:

○○ a visit from a Fairtrade Producer all the way from Ghana

Duck at Warwick SU

○○ the highly anticipated ENTERTAINMENT NIGHT on Monday of Week 9. Entry will be free and brilliant line-ups are in store, with a fashion show, play and professional DJ to boot!

○○ a stall on the Piazza over the two weeks where you can show your support and opinions on Trade Justice by decorating a flag and be part of a bunting GUINNESS WORLD RECORD!

You can check out the full line-up for the fortnight by searching for Fairtrade and Ethics at Warwick University on Facebook.

mental health awareness week

wk 8

Keeping fit and healthy isn’t just about physical exercise – your mind is just as important a component in living a full and active life. In Week 8 our Advice & Welfare team will have plenty of tips on how best to cope with the stresses and strains of student life, as well as offering useful advice which will help keep you in top mental shape during your time here at Warwick! In Week 8, the Psychology Society is holding the very first Mental Health Awareness Week at Warwick. They’ve got some really interesting talks planned, as well as other events to raise awareness-a debate, a documentary sceening, and hopefully a performance as well. Mental illnesses affect a huge number of people, but many people hold misconceptions about them. Hopefully, by the end of the week these misconceptions will be corrected! For constant updates, find us on Facebook (Mental Health Awareness Week 2011) or check our website: www.warwickpsych.com.
