intro • news in brief • events in the copper rooms - week 10
Weeks 9 and 10 bring with them the pinnacle of the sporting year at Warwick. The 21st Annual Varsity is underway, and Coventry currently hold a narrow 6-2 overall lead. The overall Varsity winner will be crowned on Wednesday of Week 10 following the football at Butts Park Arena with last year’s Varsity series closer than ever before, it is vital that we get as much support as possible to the remaining Varsity fixtures! The Football Finale promises to be a real spectacle, and while we have to be considered the favourites for the fixture, it’s certainly going to be a competitive game. Before that we have fixtures in Rugby Union, Women’s Rugby and Motorsport, all of whom will need to win if we’re going to go into the final Varsity day – Wednesday 16th March – brimming with confidence. More details on all the fixtures, and tickets to the finale, are available via the website at www.warwicksu.com/varsity. The Football Finale at the Butts is followed by the Varsity Pop! Special, this year featuring Beat-a-Maxx, as we celebrate (hopefully!) another victory over the local Poly! See you at the Butts Park Arena in Week 10! George Whitworth SPORTS OFFICER
news in brief varsity XXI finals Well, it’s finally here. Term 2 has seen Warwick’s collective sports teams battle it out against their counterparts at Cov Poly (sorry, ‘Uni’! Did it again!), and now it all comes to a rousing conclusion at the final match of this year’s Varsity tournament. On Wednesday of Week 10, our footy teams will line up to stick the boot in one last time at the Butts Arena as we aim to reclaim the title for yet another year. One thing’s for sure – win, lose or draw, we need as many of you there as possible to REPRESENT (as well as dish out a series of derisive chants which are frankly far too rude to reprint here). Make sure you grab your tickets via www.warwicksu.com/varsity and let’s ensure that football well and truly comes home!
the big debate
thursday week 9
As part of International Women’s Week, the Warwick Debating Union will offer another lively debate here in the SU as they pose the teasing question: ‘Is Feminism Still Relevant?’. Prepare yourselves for much feverish discussion and, no doubt, a few fireworks as we get stuck into another important issue as always, everyone’s welcome to come along and participate regardless of their stance on the motion (except, perhaps, Richard Keys and Andy Gray…)
vintage fashion fair
monday week 10
On Monday Week 10 your favourite vintage tea shop Curiositea will once again host its Vintage Fashion Fair. If you’re a fan of all things vintage, this is the place to pick up some bargains!
battle of the bands
weeks 9 & 10
Get ready for two of the best nights out on campus this year as Battle of the Bands enters its final stages! After five hard-fought heats, the judging panel have whittled down this year’s entrants to the last ten. On Thursday of Week 9, the runners-up from each heat will ruck it out for the last place in the Grand Final, which takes place on Tuesday Week 10. Who will follow in the footsteps of last year’s winners Lethe and bag a place on the bill at this year’s Summer Party? Make sure you come along and cheer on your favourite act, or simply soak up the very best in student musical talent!
events in the copper rooms
week 10
The Final of this year’s BOTB is just the first in an amazing four-night stand to round off your term here at the SU. The following evening, we’ll be celebrating what will no doubt be another pasting of Cov Uni at Varsity Pop!, which will feature an appearance from mash-up supremo Beat-aMaxx. Then it’s a case of ‘Oompa Loompa, doom-pa-deedoo…’ on Thursday night as we invite you into our Wonka Wonderland for fun, folics and, of course, chocolate galore at the Easter Ball! Finally, make sure you get stuck into the bubbly stuff as the Top B Foam Party returns for more frothy merriment. Get those essays in on time and we’ll see you down the front!
spring referendum • education officer election
m u d n e refer This time it’s down to you to decide. Referenda give each of you a vote on two contentious issues for the Union:
Should the Union allow Sports Clubs and Societies to seek sponsorship from currently banned companies? To remove all sponsorship bans on Societies and Sports Clubs and remove the power of Union Council to impose sponsorship bans on Societies and Sports Clubs. Currently Union Council maintains a list of companies it defines as unethical, including Nestle, Oil Companies and Arms Companies.
Should Racists and Fascists be banned from speaking at this Students’ Union? To ban Racists and Fascists from speaking at Union events and forming Union societies. In addition, Union Officers would not be allowed, in their capacity as Officers, to share a platform with Racists or Fascists. The President and Anti-Racism Campaigns Officer are responsible for defining and maintaining a list of Racist and Fascist organisations.
Polls open: 9am on Monday 7th March Polls close: 9pm on Friday 11th March Come along to the Public Debate at 12 noon on the 7th to hear the arguments and have your voice heard.

international women’s week 2011 • fairtrade fortnight 2011 continues
international women’s week 2011 On 8th March there will be celebrations around the world to commemorate the 100th anniversary of International Women’s Day (IWD). However, we go further than the UN and take a full week to celebrate female talents, successes and struggles! Every year, the SU dedicates a week to exploring issues of equality and gender, and celebrates the achievements of women. Male or female, if you are interested in gender issues there’s a full program of events which help raise awareness of the issues facing women around the world (and if it affects women, it affects men!). The theme for this year’s IWD is ‘The Pathway to Decent Work for Women’. Around the world, women are still not getting a fair deal in the workplace and face substantial discrimination. Events range from tackling serious issues such as human trafficking and women & the law to inspiring talks from international speakers. There will also be a ‘This is what a feminist looks like’ t-shirt sale throughout the week so make sure you pick yours up to show your support! Both men and women are invited - if you are engaged with the issues, intrigued to find out more or want to challenge the preconceptions you may have about women’s issues, then come along and help reinvigorate the campaign for equality! Visit the Women’s Campaigns page on the Warwick SU website for more information: www.warwicksu.com/campaigns/womens

meet your varsity captains Leo Harris MEN’S FOOTBALL CLUB ‘All football teams have local rivals which create epic derby matches - with pride as well as points at stake, these fixtures produce some of the most exciting games. Universities also have rivalries, and few come bigger than Warwick and Coventry. It is the first time football has been the Varsity finale, and both first teams are on form and have been top of their leagues. With nothing between them, we’re going to need all the support Warwick has to offer to come out on top. We need YOU!’ Football | Butts Park Arena | 17:30 | Wed Week 10
