intro • news in brief • the royal wedding
Hope everyone had a good Easter break and you aren’t all too bogged down with essays, dissertations and exam prep! While you’ve been away (or working in the library!) we’ve been busy preparing for an action-packed term – with our revamped Warwick SU website, Big 5 responses, Taken for a Ride success and some fantastic summer events to look forward to. Week 1 is a bit of a wash-out with all the Bank Holidays, but the Summer Party line-up is launched on Tuesday 26th and be sure to join us on Friday as we bring you the Royal Wedding in style – live in the Atrium from 10am with cream teas, sandwich platters and cocktails! Week 2 sees us return to normal scheduling with Top B and Skool Dayz. It is also ‘Just Vote’ Week as the nation goes to the polls on Thursday with the AV Referendum. If you’re still to be convinced one way or the other, join us in the Atrium on Tuesday for the AV Debate and Rock the Vote afterwards in The Terrace Bar. No matter what your views on the issue, please take the time to vote! This is the last Bubble for a while so to keep up to date with all that’s going on check out our new-look website – www.warwicksu.com. Chris DEMOCRACY AND COMMUNICATIONS OFFICER
news in brief new su website As you hopefully will have seen by now, the new SU website went live this week – if you haven’t had chance to check it out yet, scoot over to www.warwicksu.com and take a look! We took all your feedback from The Big Five survey and beyond into consideration during the planning and development stages, so hopefully you should all now find it easier to navigate and use on a daily basis. As always, you can let us know what you think by emailing us via feedback@warwicksu.com!
sports ball 2011
tuesday 28th june
In addition to the Grad Ball and Summer Party at the end of Term 3, this year’s Sports Ball will be taking place in Week 10 in the luxurious surroundings of the Hilton Hotel in Birmingham. This will be a snazzy Black Tie event featuring a delicious 3-course meal and a host of additional entertainment including a live band and casino! Tickets cost £42 for Warwick Sport members (£49 for non-members) and go on sale via the SU website on Tuesday 3rd May.
varsity 2011 We won again, of course… standard. Congrats to all Warwick’s sporting lads and lasses for another sterling display last term!
term 3 entertainment programme Things traditionally quieten down on campus during the exam season, but here at the Union we’ll still be running a slightly scaled-down programme of our regular nights in case you need distracting from your revision. Tuesday nights are home to our student-led acoustic night Un-plucked in The Dirty Duck, with Pop! bringing the midweek mayhem each and every Wednesday over in The Copper Rooms. Thursdays see Offbeat and Rise take to the decks to bring you the finest contemporary indie music at Idioteque, while Top Banana (together with its mini-offshoot, ‘Baby B’) will be on-hand to dispense a little monkey business most Fridays. If that’s not your thing, there’s also Get Funked in The Terrace Bar on Friday evenings, with our beats & cocktails night Mixology following on Saturday night. On top of that we’ll also be hosting Skool Dayz on Saturday of Weeks 2 & 8, with Crash in Weeks 3 & 9. Make sure you get the right balance of work, rest and play throughout the term, and we’ll look forward to seeing you out and about!
the royal wedding
friday week 1
Better get one’s fancy hat on - it’s the Royal Wedding, innit! We’re gearing up to watch Kate and ‘Wills’ tie the knot in what will no doubt be a typically subtle and restrained affair…. oh, who are we kidding?! To celebrate, we’ll be screening the entire ceremony live in the Atrium from 11am, with English Cream Teas served in Curiositea, Great British Sandwich platters in The Bread Oven and Royal Cocktails available from The Terrace Bar. Watch the future King & Queen share a snog in front of millions, then doss out the rest of the public holiday in style. Cheers, Your Majesty!
food & drink at your union in term 3
take a much needed-break at your union! We know it’s Term 3 and you’re all up to your eyeballs with revision, but here at the SU we have plenty of great offers, theme weeks and stress-busting food specials to help break up the monotony and hopefully ease the tension! Every outlet has something different to give you that much-needed break:
Xananas Bistro & Bar
Week 3 is National Doughnut Week, and Xananas will be celebrating by offering up some extra-special doughnut-dedicated desserts. Come and unleash your inner Homer Simpson by indulging in some chocolatey goodness! Week 4 is Sandwich Week. Fed up with gazing longingly at the sun-drenched fields outside the Library, wishing you could just chill out? We’ve got a sandwich for that - available in standard 6-inch or crikey-this-is-quite-a-largesandwich 12-inch varieties! World Ocean Week hits in Week 7 and we end the term celebrating the British tennis classic that is Wimbledon in Weeks 9-10. Strawberries and cream, anyone?
Curiositea Summer Frappés
on the Piazza
The ever-popular BBQ will return from Week 4 out on the Piazza, offering up a succulent array of lunchtime snacks flame-grilled by our very own sizzling specialists. There will be delicious meat and vegetarian options available, so head to the Piazza and check out the full menu.
Curiositea also gets in on the doughnut action during Week 3, as well as serving up Summer Frappés throughout the term. A special ‘Exam Pick-Me-Up’ offer gives you an extra shot of espresso in every coffee during Term 3, then June will see them host ‘A Month of Sundaes’ for all your ice-cream needs. On top of that we’ll see the return of the Vintage Fashion Fair on Monday of Weeks 3 and 8, as well as offering you another chance to get your apron on at our Cupcake Decorating Class on Wednesday 19th May (Week 4)!
The Bread Oven Salad Bar
Doughnut Week in Xananas & Curiositea Warwick SU BBQ on the Piazza
Remember that a hearty meal is an essential revision aid, so make sure you don’t go hungry this term! Up in The Dirty Duck there’s our regular Tuesday acoustic night, Un-plucked, plus a Cider Festival from Thursday to Sunday of Week 8 featuring a selection of ciders and perries together with party games run by RAG with a live music set.
Cider Fest at The Dirty Duck
If you’re early onto campus and in need of a good feed to start the day, The Bread Oven will be preparing tasty Hot Breakfast Baguettes every day between 10am -11am. Their new Salad Bar will also be opening at the start of term, and don’t forget to check out the menu boards for the weekly specials!
the big five • society events • have your say
A massive thanks to all of you who filled out a copy of The Big Five survey at the end of last term – your feedback really is absolutely invaluable in determining which issues we need to focus on over the coming year. We’ve been pouring over the results during the Easter break and will soon be writing a detailed response which we will put up on the SU website so you can see what you’ve been saying, and what we’re going to do about it. There also seemed to be several key misconceptions about where the SU’s jurisdiction begins and ends on campus and beyond, so we will also be preparing a ‘Mythbusters’ article which will hopefully clear up any confusion! In short, keep your eyes on www.warwicksu.com over the coming weeks for our response to your feedback, together with details of all the competition winners from the survey’s prize draw!
society events warwick student cinema Warwick Student Cinema will be running a slightly reduced schedule in Term 3, but is still showing films on the same nights of the week until Week 6! Sundays now only have one screening (with the same film repeated on Tuesday), but there are still loads of great headline movies including Tron: Legacy, Black Swan, The King’s Speech and True Grit. On top of that there’s the Lord of the Rings AllNighter - all three films back-to-back on both Friday and Saturday of Week 2, plus a quiz with the chance to win amazing prizes! Don’t miss out.
christian union ‘Globe Café’ is a free weekly ‘café’ style event that has been run by the Christian Union for several years for international students. A varied theme each week provides different foods and activities to be sampled, while people can meet and make friends from many different cultures. If you’re an international student, head over to the Chaplaincy every Friday from 5pm until 7pm.
