intro • news in brief • ‘create a project’ competition

Well, a year has gone by in a flash. Everyone here at Warwick SU hopes that’s it’s been a smooth and memorable ride for all of you! Without a doubt, it has been a memorable but incredibly busy year for us! We’ve compiled a booklet entitled “What We Do For You” to explain what we’ve been up to this past year. Some highlights include launching our campaign against tuition fees, our Relax housing campaign and a record turnout in elections. The entire booklet is available to view on our website, so take a look when you have some spare time. Most importantly, make sure you celebrate the end of term with a blast! To get you started, we’re holding some fantastic events such as the Summer Party featuring Feeder, the Graduation Ball, Sports Ball and WSAF. Tickets are running out fast so be sure to get yours in time. Whatever your plans are this summer, whether it’s travelling, working or writing up your dissertation, Warwick SU wishes you all the best! We hope you’ve enjoyed your time here at Warwick and for others, we’ll see you back next term! Daniel Stevens WARWICK SU PRESIDENT

news in brief strategic plan Here at the Union we always rely on your input to tell us what you want from us as an organisation – what we’re doing right, where we can improve and which specific issues you’d like us to focus on. In recent weeks we’ve taken onboard all your comments and feedback from the Big 5 survey, Rant Week, Have Your Say and numerous focus groups in order to determine the direction we should take as a Union over the next three years. The results have been compiled into a consultation document which we’re now handing over to you for approval. You can take a look at our proposals and submit your comments and feedback on the Warwick SU website at www.warwicksu.com/strategy - please take a few moments to look at these proposals, as it’s your contribution as members which helps keep the good ship SU sailing in the right direction!

moss bros. - summer ball suit hire Attention, gents! Moss Bros will be returning to the SU to offer discounted suit hire for the Grad Ball and Sports Ball during Week 9.

********* EXCLUSIVE STUDENT OFFER ********* Only £42.50* for the hire of: Jacket • Trousers • Shirt • Bow Tie | (*price includes accidental damage waiver)

Pop along for a fitting between 11am - 4pm every day from Monday 21st to Thursday 24th June, or 10:30am - 2pm on Friday 25th.

warwick trampoline society 24 hour jump From 12 noon on Thursday 30th June to Friday 1st July, Warwick Trampoline Society will hosting a 24hr sponsored ‘jump’ in the SU to raise money for the victims of the Japanese Earthquake. With an Olympic-size trampoline filling the Atrium, this is set to be a veritable feast for the eyes, as members of the club bounce their way through a marathon 24 hours! Sponsored by Red Bull, the ‘bouncers’ will certainly be in need of wings for this worthy endeavour - all students are invited to come along and show their support!

‘create a project’ competition Warwick Volunteers has launched a competition, supported by Santander Universities, to find exciting new volunteering projects that will benefit the local community! If you have a good idea, you could receive up to £1000 funding to run a project and win £100 for yourself! If you fancy a challenge, have the qualities to be a good leader, are hardworking and committed and want to leave your mark on Warwick, this is your perfect opportunity to make a difference. Please follow this link for more information: www2.warwick.ac.uk/ about/community/volunteers/news/warwick_volunteers_santander

sabb goodbyes

sabb goodbyes At the end of another long and exhausting year, we tracked down the outgoing Sabbatical team to find out their highlights of the last 12 months. Here’s what they had to say…

fairwell,

DANIEL STEVENS I’m most proud of all the students here at Warwick - it’s been a privilege to represent all of you this year and I wish you all the best!

STU STANLEY Particular highlights for me are the (fairly) smooth running of the Booksale and the organisation of the Summer Party and Grad Ball. I hope your year has been as good as mine!

andy white The Societies Fair back in October is up there as a highlight. What a buzzing atmosphere and so many society signups over two days after months of prep. Great feeling!

george whitworth Best moment – winning Varsity for the 21st consecutive time! Worst moment – losing the BUCS Lacrosse South Premiership on a goal difference of two. At least I have another year to set the record straight!

sean ruston Taking 300 students to London to protest against cuts to higher education, visiting schools with the Inspire scheme and getting the University to commit to changes on intercalated fees, feedback and widening access.

chris luck Elections turnout up, quorate Referenda, a new look warwicksu. com, RANT week, Have Your Say and What We Do For You – an amazing year with amazing people!

leo bøe I’m proud of having provided more GUM clinics than ever before, directly helping over 800 individual students, and having been part of the first Sabb team to deliver on buses. Looking forward to next year!

wsaf 2011 • summer of sport: weeks 9 & 10 • cider fest

wsaf 2011 Boasting some of Warwick’s finest creative and performing talent, Warwick Student Arts Fest (WSAF) returns in Weeks 9-10 for the eighth consecutive year. Building on past successes, WSAF fuses different genres of performance and showcases original material from individual students, as well as shows by long-running societies. There’s something to suit everyone’s taste, from Shakespearean Drama to Pole Dancing, classical music to rock, quiz shows to stand-up comedy – together with brilliant combinations of genres that you never thought possible. Celebrate the end of another great year in style, and take part in this unique event! What will your WSAF be? Visit www.wsaf.co.uk for more information and a full schedule of events.

a summer of sport: weeks 9 &10 Now that exams are over and the sun is (hopefully) out, some of our sports clubs will be bringing you great opportunities to participate in sporting activities throughout Weeks 9 and 10. With so much time on your hands, grab a few of your mates and get involved! From taster sessions in Water Polo and Handball to tournaments in 5-a-side, Badminton, Cricket and Dodgeball, there should be something for everyone. On Friday Week 9, come down to Cryfield and watch Warwick Sport staff take on the Ladies Football 1st XI, as they look for another victory to match that of twelve months ago! This is one match not to be missed. More details and information, including how to register your teams for the tournaments, are available on the Warwick Sport website. Just follow this link: www.warwicksport.warwick. ac.uk/events/ summersports2011

We’ve got the perfect tonic to help you celebrate the end of your exams and kick back ahead of two weeks’ wellearned relaxation - a special three-day Cider Festival up in The Dirty Duck in Week 8! Running from Thursday 16th to Saturday 18th June, this will be your chance to sample some of the many delicious ciders, scrumpies and perries we’ll be offering from throughout the UK, all specially shipped in for your perusal and delectation. There’ll also be live acoustic music throughout the festival, together with party games from RaG. If you missed out on this year’s sold-out Real Ale Festival, make sure you stop by for a jar or two of the good stuff!

top b & crash top 40 polls For the final Top Banana and Crash events of Term 3, we always hand the reins over to you guys to find out your favourite tunes of the year. Once the results are in, we’ll count down each respective Top 40 chart in its entirety on the night! To cast your vote, search for ‘Top B Top 40 2011’ or ‘Crash Top 40 2011’ on Facebook, ‘Like’ the page, pick your five favourite tunes from the shortlist and post them as a comment on the group wall. We’ll then do the rest, and look forward to seeing you down the front for what are always two of the best nights of music in the Union all year!

helpers & supervisors wanted! Things just never stop here at the SU while you’re busy readying yourselves for the end of the academic year, we’re already thinking ahead to October when a brand new batch of Freshers are due to arrive! It can be a nerve-wracking experience coming to University for the first time, as many of you will remember - that’s why the Union enlists the help of hundreds of volunteers each year to make sure that Freshers and their families receive a friendly and helpful welcome to campus from people who understand their concerns and can answer their questions. As always, we’ll be looking to recruit a team of dedicated students to work as Freshers Supervisors and Freshers Helpers over the opening weeks of term. Keep an eye on the jobs page of the SU website over the coming weeks for full details of all these positions!
