Whether you’re a first year Fresher, a new postgraduate or a returning student, I’d like to wish you a warm welcome to campus! As you know, the seven Sabbatical Officers have been working hard over the summer, responding to your feedback, improving things around campus and, most importantly, within your Students’ Union. The Bubble is a publication we put together to let you know what the SU and students have been up to, together with what’s coming up. These are printed and distributed around campus every two weeks this edition covers what we as your full-time elected officers have done since August, plus the events of Weeks 2 and 3. In terms of what’s coming up, there’s your chance to make a real impact and tell us how the Union and campus could be improved by running to be part of Union Council (kind of like a student parliament), along with a whole bunch of society events and some great nights out. It’s just left for me to say that, on behalf of all of the officers and staff at Warwick SU, I wish you all the best for the year ahead! Leo Bøe WARWICK SU PRESIDENT
news in brief are we all settled in…? While the initial madness of Freshers Week may have subsided, here at the SU we’re still going strong! Tickets for the remaining events are selling fast, so be sure you grab yours in advance via www.warwicksu.com/events and read on for info about other events and offers coming up!

crime prevention roadshows
wk 2
Local Police Officers will be holding a series of Crime Prevention Roadshows out by the Library between 10am-2pm on Tuesday to Friday of Week 2. If you live on campus and can’t make it along, our own campus policeman will be visiting Halls – keep an eye on Izzy John’s blog on the SU website for further details nearer the time!
Aside from taking part in the inaugural Hall Wars in Week 2, another way to show your allegiance to your campus dwelling is by purchasing a Warwick SU Halls Hoodie from our website. They’re available in a wide range of sizes and colours, and are made specifically to order - if you’ve already got yourself a nickname, you can also personalise it! Head over to www.warwicksu.com/shop to see what’s on offer.

freshers 2011 so far...
freshers so far... It’s been an amazing first week of Freshers here at the SU, with rammed 3 day Freshers Fair, Democracy, Societies and Sports Fairs, virtually every event selling out and thousands of you well and truly HAVING IT each night! Things got very messy at the Paint Party on Monday of Week 1 as gallons of UV paint went hurtling through the air splattering everything in sight – rest assured, the cleaners had a grand old time with the mops & cloths the next morning! The following evening, Warwick Snow cemented their reputation as one of the hardestpartying clubs on campus with their spectacular launch party Avalanche, featuring speaker-rumbling sets from Jack Beats, Urban Knights and Audio Criminals. Tasty! Mash-up supremo Beat-a-Maxx then whipped up an audio-visual storm at a heaving first Pop! before Chapel Club took the stage on Thursday to deliver a blistering warm-up for the first Transmission. On Friday night, the campus legend that is Spank the Monkey made sure that Top B got off to a roaring start to the year, while on Saturday Benga, DJ Fresh and friends got the walls shaking at a truly thumping first Pressure. Things then rounded off very nicely with a vibrant celebration of African music at Kultural Fusion on Sunday! But the fun doesn’t stop there - coming up in Week 2 we still have Hall Wars, Zane Lowe’s Insider Tour, Pop!, Top B, Ministry of Sound, Crash and the return of Tony Lee’s comedy hypnotism show – not forgetting, of course, the spectacular (and now sold out!) Moulin Rougethemed Freshers Party featuring Sub Focus, Labrinth, Charli XCX and much more. In short, we’re still up for it, and we hope you are too!

The Warwick SU Inspire scheme takes Warwick students into local schools, where they talk about their life as a student and chat with pupils about their perception of the University experience. Participants will have the chance to motivate the next generation of University students, many of whom may not have considered Higher Education as an option. Applications open on Monday 10th October via the SU website. what have your sabbs been up to?
what have the sabbs been up to? You may have noticed the Sabbatical Officers’ lovely faces plastered up around the building – but who exactly are they and what do they do? Well, put simply, they preside over the Union’s various operations, you elect them and they’re here to represent your interests. Here’s a small taste of what they’ve been up to over the summer…
leo bøe Over the summer I prepared the SU to partake in International Orientation for the first time in order to improve representation of international students. Along with the other officers, I’ve also been in discussions about fee rises for international and PGT students.
sean ruston I’ve been working with Teach First to improve and expand our schools outreach scheme Inspire – apply online (warwicksu.com/inspire). I’ve also been working to better support SSLCs, secure more library investment and improve teaching quality across the University.
chris luck I’ve been working on Officer awareness, making sure you guys know who we are and how to get in touch. We’ve got an up-to-date website, there’s progress on the Democracy Review and we’re all guns blazing with the Autumn Elections.
george whitworth I’ve been redecorating The Copper Rooms and have ordered some new bench seating for the venue. I’ve also been working on the new furniture which will be coming into the Atrium during Week 2 and have been helping to plan the Book Sale!
izzy john Expect to see campaigns around mental health and responsible drinking in Term 1, as well as GUM clinics and Chlamydia screenings. I’ve also been brainstorming the Union’s community strategy and produced a moving-in guide for off-campus students!
matthew rogers Getting sponsorship for the new IKEA Membership Space in the SU so societies have more space on central campus to rehearse - it features mirrors, a piano and more. I’ve also updated the society exec webpages as well as preparing for last week’s Societies Fair.
chris sury The Olympic Torch is visiting us on 19th October with lots of clubs and societies and a carnival in the Piazza. Make sure that you sign up for the Ernst & Young Netball and Football leagues now. Get friends and hall-mates together and have a go!
