intro • news in brief • summer party 2012 facebook page

This term is bursting at the seams with events, and the next two weeks are no exception. After an incredible One World Week, everyone’s attention in the Union is shifting towards The Big 5 – our annual membership survey. This is your chance to tell us what we do well, what we do badly and how we can improve. It takes just minutes to fill in but has a huge impact on what we do for you. As an extra incentive, we’re also rustling up some prize draws for those that fill it in. Before that though, don’t miss the launch of Battle of the Bands 2012, the 2nd Housing Day and of course the Superbowl – details online at warwicksu.com. Remember that nominations are also open for the STARS of Warwick awards, giving you the chance to celebrate your favourite lecturers and tutors. At the end of Week 5, nominations open in the Officer Elections 2012 – the highlight democratic event of the year. Campus will go wild with candidates vying for your votes but first we need some people to run! There are full-time and part-time positions available, with full details at www.warwicksu.com/elections - take the time to have a read about what’s on offer and don’t rule it out.

news in brief warwick student cinema events In addition to their regular programme of screenings, WSC have two notable events taking place in Week 4:

○○ KPMG SPONSORED EVENT: CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON

Tuesday 31st January | Week 4 | 19:30 | L3 This event is FREE for all students to attend. The film will be followed by entertainment (most likely a quiz with prizes) and free food & drink. Our last event filled up completely, so turn up early to avoid disappointment!

○○ MIDNIGHT SCREENING: PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 3

Saturday 4th February | Week 4 | Midnight | L3 See how the activity began in this prequel to the modern-classic horror.

LGBT history month

throughout february

LGBT History Month takes place in the UK every February. It’s a month dedicated to celebrating the lives of lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans people, who have traditionally been erased from history due to social stigma. Very few people learned about Alun Turing, the mathematician who worked to break German cipher codes during World War II and was later imprisoned simply because he was gay. LGBT History month is a chance to re-examine history, finding where LGBT people were persecuted and honouring them as best we can. Keep an eye out for on-campus events - highlights include Love Music Hate Homophobia and Warwick Pride’s Youtube campaign, “You are not alone”.

TEDx Warwick

monday week 4

The next TEDx Warwick Home Grown Ideas Taster Session, subtitled No Videos, Real People, takes place on Monday 30th January at 6pm in S0.21. For more info about the organisation and its various activities, head over to www.tedxwarwick.com.

Have a great couple of weeks!

the wombats & wild beasts: support acts announced

Chris Luck

The opening acts for these two top gigs have now been confirmed: supporting The Wombats will be hotly-tipped Stateside indie-rockers The Static Jacks, while acclaimed experimental act Alt-J will get things warmed up before Wild Beasts. Visit www.warwicksu.com/events to take a listen, and get there early to check them out!

summer party 2012 facebook page For those who don’t already know, at the end of Term 3 we hold a massive mini-festival on campus featuring live bands, fairground rides, inflatable fun and much, much more. The Facebook page for this year’s event is now up online at www.facebook.com/warwicksusummerparty2012 head on over and let us know who you’d like to see grace our Main Stage in June, as we’ll look into the feasibility of all sensible suggestions! (Please note that previous requests for The Beatles, Jeff Buckley and, bafflingly, ‘Mumpkin & Sons’ are not classed as “sensible suggestions”).

the big five 2012

WWW.WARWICKSU.COM/THEBIGFIVE At Warwick SU, we are committed to giving you the best possible experience whilst at University. We want to make sure that we are doing the best we can for all our students, but to do this we need you to tell us what the Union does well, and what we could make better. In order to ensure we get the whole picture, we are looking at 5 key areas. Our Big 5 are: Service

Involvement

Engagement

Representation

The Future

The Big 5 is Warwick SU’s massive annual survey. Our aim is to poll as many members of the student body as possible to find out exactly what you think of your Union – what we’re doing right, what we can improve, and how we can better suit your needs during your time here at Warwick. This is your chance to have your say on all aspects of the Union’s operations, from clubs & societies and food & beverage outlets to welfare, democracy and entertainment. All the results are compiled and looked over by the Sabbatical and Management teams here at the Union, and we do our best to implement your feedback wherever possible. This is YOUR Union, and it can only function through your input, engagement and feedback - if you’ve ever praised, griped or whinged about something we’re doing, now’s your chance to say so. Previous surveys have led to improvements in public transport, increased library opening hours and innumerable campaigns on your behalf, so your contribution really does make a difference! The survey will be up online throughout Week 5 at www.warwicksu.com/thebig5 – make sure you take a few minutes to log on and fill one out, as your feedback really is important to us. As an added incentive, there’ll be prizes up for grabs from entries drawn at random, so get clicking!

get your hands on some top prizes! We really are too good to you! Here’s a selection of what you can get your hands on:

officer elections 2012: nominations open week 5 • battle of the bands • superbowl

In Week 8, campus will descend into madness as candidates campaign for your vote in lectures, kitchens and halls across campus. The Officer Elections are your chance to choose the people who run Warwick SU - each year, you elect 7 people (Sabbatical Officers) who work together to represent you and make your student experience as good as it can possibly be. We have revised officer roles this year - all of these posts are full-time and can be done as a year-out during your degree (or, more commonly, as a year post-graduation):

PRESIDENT

POSTGRADUATE

EDUCATION

SOCIETIES

WELFARE & CAMPAIGNS

SPORTS

DEMOCRACY & DEVELOPMENT There are also a number of positions which you can run for and hold while you study (a bit like being on a society/club exec). This year’s nominations open in Week 5 - If you’re interested in running for a position, check out www.warwicksu.com/elections and come along to the relevant briefing session. Alternatively email democracy@warwicksu.com.

Battle of the Bands

Bandsoc’s annual showcase of live musical talent kicks off again in Week 4 – with the winners bagging the opening slot on the Main Stage of this year’s Summer Party, there’s everything to play for as our own student bands limber up to ruck it out for the top prize. Who will follow in last year’s winners’ footsteps? Come along to the first two heats on Tuesday of Weeks 4 & 5 to find out who’s in with a shout!

Nominations for STARS of Warwick are still open – this is a new awards scheme designed to recognise excellence in teaching here at the University. It is run in conjunction with the student body, and asks you to nominate your lecturers and tutors for consideration by our panel. If there’s a member of the University’s academic staff who you feel deserves special recognition, head over to www.warwicksu.com/education/stars to check out the various categories and cast your vote!

you say... why can’t clubs & societies put posters up around campus?

we say...

DEADLINE: Friday 10 February 2012 th

monday week 4 The next Warwick SU General Meeting has been rescheduled for Monday of Week 4 – every student is welcome to attend and every student has a vote. This time around we’ll be debating policy on postering on campus, the Eden Springs boycott, Bacardi, the Workers Rights Consortium and Kit Kats. Check out all of the full motions on our website at www.warwicksu.com/generalmeeting. See you there!

If you have an idea for an event, activity or project which can help improve internationalisation on campus, let us know! We have a £1000 fund which any student, group of students or society can bid for. HANDY HINT: applications which are sustainable and not just single events are more likely to be granted funding! Head over to www.warwicksu.com/goglobal or email president@warwicksu.com for more information.

sunday week 5 Pizazz is the Warwick dance community’s annual spectacular, showcasing the amazing range of abilities and styles on offer from our very own student societies here at the Union. From Street Dance and Salsa to Ballroom, Breakdancing and beyond, there’ll be something to wow you from every discipline! Taking place at the Royal Spa Centre in Leamington Spa on Sunday 12th February (Week 5), there’ll be two performances this year: a matinée at 3pm and the evening show at 7:30pm. Keep your eyes on the SU website for more info and to purchase tickets!

This is an issue coming up at the General Meeting on Monday 30th January (at 7pm in MS.02) and is one we are working hard on - watch this space!

you say... the copper rooms should sell £1 pints, always!

we say... No, sorry. Not only would it be irresponsible from a Welfare perspective, but financially we wouldn’t be able to offer you all our other services. As a trade-off, we think that’s pretty fair!
