Term 2 has flown by and Varsity week is finally upon us! If you have not heard of the Varsity Series, then you need to sort it out and get on board with TEAM WARWICK. Having never lost a Varsity Series against our rivals at Coventry University before, we need all the help we can get to make sure that our teams get the results they need to bring it home for us again. So far, we have had some pretty exciting matches and they just keep getting better - the series finishes in the Olympic Stadium: The Ricoh Arena with the Football Finale on Wednesday 14th March as our Women’s and Men’s 1st Teams head into battle. Tickets are available at www.warwicksu.com/varsity see you there! Congratulations are also due to our 2012-13 Sabbatical team, who were elected at the end of Week 8 after a week of feverish campaigning – check out the details of who’ll be representing you next year on page 3. Have a great Easter and don’t work too hard. Don’t forget that all the Sabbs will still be here if you need to get in touch or come in for a chat. Have a good one! Chris Sury SPORTS OFFICER

news in brief hidden course costs – week of action Week 10 is the NUS Week of Action against Hidden Course Costs. We will be focusing locally to encourage University Senior Management to increase transparency around these costs (e.g. printing, textbooks and field trips). This ties in with our priority campaign, “The Pound in Your Pocket”, which aims to find out how much it really costs to be a student at Warwick. We will be asking students to tell us about their hidden course costs throughout Week 10, with the aim of increasing transparency and asking that some costs can be included in tuition fees.

varsity finale day 2012 • the one to watch

For the uninitiated, Varsity is an annual series of sporting matches which pit the best of Warwick against our nemeses from Cov University. We’ve not lost to our local rivals in the past 21 years, but every year the scorelines have been edging closer and closer, with Warwick winning 38-32 in 2011. This year we need all the support we can get as we seek to smash it once again! The finale of this year’s competition will take place at the Ricoh Arena on Wednesday 14th March as our Men’s and Women’s Football 1st teams head into battle against their Cov counterparts. Tickets for this all-important clash cost £6, which includes coach transport to and from the event. Later in the evening we’ll then be celebrating (or commiserating… no, definitely celebrating) at a special Varsity Pop! in the Students’ Union! There will also be Cricket, Rugby League, Swimming, Netball, Volleyball and Football matches taking place throughout the day on-campus and beyond – for full details, log on to the website.

presents the one to watch

The Rugby Union Warwick vs Harper Adams game finished 25 – 8 with a confident win for Warwick. Men’s Rugby have been performing very highly this season, with all three teams looking for a promotion this year.

So far, the One To Watch series has featured Classical & Modern Dance, Men’s and Ladies’ Hockey and Riding. It’s a great way to keep up to date with the success stories of Team Warwick - for video clips of matches so far this year, visit www.warwicksu.com/sports/onetowatch. Your club can also apply to be recorded by a member of WTV here – it’s a great way to promote our clubs on campus!

student trustee vacancies • have your say

STUDENT TRUSTEE VACANCIES AT WARWICK SU Warwick SU is a charitable organisation which exists to represent the views and interests of students at Warwick University. The University’s 20,000 + students come from across the UK and overseas, from diverse age groups, with diverse experiences and needs. Warwick SU is a membership organisation which also runs significant commercial services whose surpluses are used to subsidise these welfare, representational and developmental activities for our members. The Trustees of Warwick SU are fundamental to the success of the charity and are responsible for its financial sustainability and strategic direction. As a result of some of our current trustees coming to the end of their Warwick University career, we are looking for up to 4 volunteer Student Trustees with passion and enthusiasm who can commit 4 to 6 hours per month largely in early evenings to drive strategy and ensure strong charity governance. To be a Trustee, you must be a student at Warwick University, be over 18 years old when you take up appointment and have no unspent criminal convictions. You will be required to attend training both at the start of your term of office and throughout in order to ensure you have adequate knowledge to carry out your responsibilities. Our Trustee Board has been lucky enough to include postgraduate and undergraduate students, full time and part time students, home and international students, students from the whole range of faculties and students of varying ages (from 18 to 70!). We would really like to maintain such a wide variety of experiences on our Trustee Board and welcome applications from all students in any of the demographic groups that make up the student body here at Warwick. If you think you would be interested in applying to be a student trustee, email trustees@warwicksu.com for further information. For an informal discussion about the role, please email Leo Boe, Chair of Trustees and Warwick SU President: president@warwicksu.com. Interested parties are asked to send a CV and covering letter detailing why you would like to be a trustee at Warwick Students’ Union and what you could bring to the Board to trustees@warwicksu.com.

you say... is it not hypocritical to run go green week when the library’s heating is on so high?

we say... Go Green Week is run by People & Planet Society in conjunction with the SU, while the Library is a University-run facility, so unfortunately this isn’t something we have control over!

you say... the buses to campus still leave much to be desired...

we say... While improvements have been made in recent months (including the intro. of the new Travel de Courcey lines), we agree that more can be done. We promise to keep up the pressure!

By popular demand, the UV paintfest is back, delivering a night of banging tunes and messy shenanigans to send you off in style!

As a special treat on the penultimate night of term, we’ll be putting on a special EARPHONE DISCO in The Copper Rooms. If you’ve never experienced the madness of this international party phenomenon before, the concept is simple: grab yourself a pair of headphones (supplied free on the night) and choose between one of two settings depending on what sort of music you’re in the mood for. You can then feel free to wail along to your heart’s content as we bang out the tunes direct to your ears – all while the rest of the room stays silent! This is always the oddest night of the year for the bar and venue staff as everyone else belts out the lyrics to songs which just aren’t there. If you’re heading home early at the end of Term 2, there’s no finer send-off!
