intro • news in brief • STARS of Warwick awards ceremony
It’s that time of year again when the Officer Elections take Warwick by storm – Week 8 will see posters and signs appear across campus, lectures will be bombarded with shout-outs and kitchens will be occupied by candidates vying for your vote. The polls open Wednesday 9am and close Friday 9pm - each of you gets a vote and it’s vital that you take the time to have your say on who will run the Union next year. If you’re unsure who to support then pop along to the Candidate Debates at 5pm in the Atrium on Monday and Tuesday (Mon: Welfare & Campaigns, Education, Societies and Postgrad Officers. Tues: President, Democracy and Dev, Sports Officers) take a read of the manifestos and ask the candidates online via Facebook. The next couple of weeks will also see more clashes between Warwick and rivals Cov in Varsity – make sure you cheer our teams on to victory and remember to get your t-shirts while stocks last. Week 9 also promises to be a busy one with Women’s Week, Vegetarian Food Week and the semi-final of Battle of the Bands – never a dull moment in your SU! Happy voting, folks! Chris Luck

chortle student comedy awards
monday week 8
The SU’s Comedy Society is proud to be hosting a heat of this year’s Chortle Student Comedy Awards in Copper Rooms 2 on Monday 27th February. Providing a showcase for new comic talent, the special guest compère is Joe Lycett from TV’s Epic Win. Doors are at 7:30pm – with several previous winners going on to fame and fortune, this could be your opportunity to catch the next big thing live onstage before they take over your telly for good!
the vagina monologues
weeks 8 & 9
Eve Ensler’s acclaimed play The Vagina Monologues returns to Warwick this fortnight! Be part of International Women’s Week and V-Season by coming along to support two wonderful charities, V-Day and CRASAC (Coventry Rape and Sexual Abuse Centre). There will be three performances this year: 1st and 2nd March at 7:30pm in H0.52, and a final showing at Bath Place in Leamington Spa on 9th March (also 7:30pm). Tickets are available via the Societies listings calendar at warwicksu.com/events and cost £5 for students (£6 non-students).
battle of the bands
weeks 8 & 9
The final preliminary heat of this year’s competition roars into life on Tuesday 28th February, offering another six acts the chance to prove their mettle in front of the judging panel. At the time of writing, 3=Car, EOSM and The Price We Pay are all limbering up to duke it out in the Semi-Final (Tuesday Week 9, CR2) – with just one last place available in this year’s final, you can bet that it’s going to be a closely-fought contest indeed!
crash
saturday week 9 Due to the unfortunate cancellation of Week 4’s Crash (curse you, snow!), tickets for that event will be valid on the door for the final Crash of this term on Saturday 10th March. If you bought a ticket for Week 4, just turn up, swipe your card and you’ll be let in!
STARS of Warwick awards ceremony STARS of Warwick is a new student-based initiative honouring the lecturers, seminar leaders and tutors who’ve made a real impression on your time here at University. Nominations were drawn entirely from the student body and, after careful consideration of all the entrants, we’re now ready to unveil the winners at a special ceremony in Week 9! Taking place in the Rootes Social Building at 5pm on Thursday 8th March, the event is open to all and promises to be a glittering celebration of some of the finest academics that Warwick has to offer. Make sure you come along to pay tribute to the people who made a difference to your education!
officer elections 2012
Throughout Week 8, the Union will be awash with orange publicity and campus will come alive as the candidates for next year’s full and part-time Officer Teams encourage you to give them your vote. So! Why is it so important, and what’s all the fuss about?
WHAT IS IT ALL ABOUT? Put simply, the Sabbatical team are in charge of the SU for the next academic year. They sit on committees and working groups at all levels of University and SU operations, and are responsible for steering the Students’ Union in the direction mandated by the membership (that’s you!). Most importantly, they represent the student body, both individually and collectively. If there’s something you’d like to see changed or improved to make your time here at Warwick more enjoyable or less stressful, make sure you read through the candidates’ manifestos and pick the one who best represents your own views and concerns. There are also a number of part-time positions up for grabs, representing minority groups and individual faculties. You can read up on all the candidates online by visiting WWW.WAR WICK SU.COM/ELECTIONS.
HOW TO GET INVOLVED Throughout Week 8 we’ll have a number of electionsbased events in the SU, including Candidate Question time at 5pm in the Atrium on Monday 27th and Tuesday 28th, plus a special Officer Elections Pop! the following night where you’ll get to see candidates take part in various ridiculous stage games.
WHY SHOULD YOU VOTE? Voting is all done online and only takes a few moments – it’s vital that as many of you have your say as possible. Every vote can make a big difference.
HOW TO VOTE Voting opens at 9am on Wednesday 29th February and closes at 9pm on Friday 2nd March – make sure you come along to Top B that night to find out all the results as they’re announced onstage!

varsity 2012 As anyone who’s laid eyes on the Warwick Memes Facebook group will know, a bit of healthy rivalry with our local ‘friends’ over at Cov Uni goes a long way. Throughout Term 2, our sporting lads and lasses don their gear and go into battle in a bid to claim the Varsity crown for yet another year, and things will really start hotting up in Weeks 8 & 9 as we start to reach the culmination of this year’s tournament. On Monday 27th February we have the Netball & Basketball contest over at Cov Uni Sports Centre, with American Football, Athletics, Rugby Union and Tennis matches taking place in various locations the following Sunday. Then in Week 9 it’s onto the Hockey game on Wednesday 7th March. Make sure you don’t miss the Finale Day, which will be coming up in Week 10 on Wednesday 14th March and takes in Badminton, Cricket, Football, Rugby League, Swimming and Volleyball. After the show, of course, it’s the “aaaaaaaafter-party”, and we’ll be celebrating what will no doubt have turned out to be another hard-won victory at a special Varsity Pop! on Wednesday of Week 10. As always, you can find out details of all the fixtures and keep up to date with the latest results by logging onto www.warwicksu.com/varsity.
