intro • news in brief • club cardio

Hello, and welcome to Weeks 7 and 8. The term hasn’t slowed down yet, so don’t worry - there’s still loads going on across the SU! Week 7 will see the return of the fantastic Warwick International Development Summit, tackling major issues affecting development and bringing together students, academics and professionals to share, debate and discuss. Week 8 sees our very first All Student Meeting, addressing issues facing democracy in our Union. One event I hope to see you all coming along to is one of the first in the A Future Worth Fighting For campaign. Students from across campus will march with the National Union of Students through the streets of London on Wednesday of Week 8 – if you want to stand up for education, employment and empowerment, buy your ticket on the Union website today! Whatever you get up to this fortnight, have a great time – and remember, if you have an education issue, my office is always open. James EDUCATION OFFICER

news in brief WUDS presents pornography week 7 London, July 2005: in the course of one week, Britain will experience a chain of events that will change it forever, for better or worse. With the eyes of the world watching and a camera on every street corner, the actions of four young British men will bring the country crashing from euphoria to desolation. But who is innocent and who is guilty in a culture where everyone is breaking the rules? Combining Simon Stephens’ visceral play with uncompromising performance and design, this production will ask you to consider your own responsibility for a national tragedy. Arts Centre Studio | Age 16+ | Tickets: £8.50 (£7.50)

warwick emerging markets forum

week 8

The Warwick Emerging Markets Forum is an exciting student-run forum discussing emerging markets and their increasing prominence in the world. The forum will be held from 10am of 24th November in MS.02 (Maths and Statistics), and this year’s theme is “Upturning the Pyramid”, highlighting the rise of emerging economies over the currently developed world. The forum covers various areas including economic, political, development and investment issues, while prestigious and influential speakers are invited to engage in inspiring discussions aiming to raise awareness of our changing global community. Our forum also includes a new panel on careers in the emerging markets, allowing students to explore their opportunities!

NUS national demo 2012

On 21st November, we want you to join Warwick SU at the NUS National Demonstration in London. Students from across the UK, from higher and further education, will be marching together to demonstrate the strength of our voices and the depth of our anger with the treatment of young people and students in the UK today. As part of our series of events A Future Worth Fighting For, Warwick will be joining thousands of students who are marching through the streets of London to stand up for their future. The three themes of the demonstration are:

We demand a properly-funded tertiary education system, accessible to all, in which all students are supported and encouraged – so that anyone with the ability and aspiration to study has the opportunity to do so.

Month after month, we’ve seen youth unemployment rise (it has now reached over 1 million in the UK), threatening to cause permanent scars to our economy and society. We do not need degrading, exploitative and humiliating workfare schemes – we need fair work and fair pay. Sustainable jobs are a necessary building block for a sustainable future and a just society.

Politicians have let education and employment slip off the agenda, but now we have an opportunity to create a movement which empowers us to take back our future. We need to work together with our teachers, our families, our friends, our communities and other students to build formidable alliances for change – this is your opportunity to stand up, be counted and ensure that you’re heard as part of a collective!

Tickets are available now from the SU website for just £7 including return transport, and coaches will be leaving from both Campus and Leamington. Warwick SU has comprehensive plans to keep students safe, and we have high hopes that the demonstration will be peaceful, enjoyable and engaging!

rag week - week 7

...is back, and this time it’s bigger than ever! One of the most surreal events in the Warwick calendar, RAG Week takes place in Term 1 every year and is an ideal opportunity to partake in a veritable smorgasbord of campus-based tomfoolery – all in the name of sweet charity! In addition to great events like the Big Fat Quiz of the Year on Tuesday Week 7 and the infamous Traffic Light Disco two nights later (wear red if you’re taken, amber if you’re open to offers and green if you’re on the pull and raring to go!), RAG Week offers the opportunity to get your own back on that housemate who isn’t doing their fair share of the washing-up by arranging what’s cryptically referred to as a ‘gnoming’. For the uninitiated, this involves them being cling-filmed to a tree and covered in flour, water, baked beans or more depending on the severity of their indiscretion! Even Jeremy Paxman mentioned this process on University Challenge recently, so it must be worth the time and effort… for an extra few quid, you can even go the whole hog and organise a ‘king gnoming’ if you want to get particularly hardcore! Alternatively, you can reward that someone special by having chocolates or a rose delivered to their lecture (by a giant furry animal, obviously). Make sure you visit the RAG stall in the SU each day to find out what’s on offer!

WIDS summit • the bread oven specials • have your say

friday-sunday wk 7 Warwick International Development Society (WIDS) is committed to providing an intellectual platform for issues relating to international development by bringing together the diverse perspectives of students, academics and professionals from across the world. Their flagship event, the WIDS Summit, takes place in Week 7. As the largest student-run development summit in the UK, WIDS is a unique platform that allows participants to engage with critical issues facing the field of international development and be inspired to take action towards positive change. This year’s summit is based on the concept of “The Faces of International Development: Old Ideas, New Solutions”. Through this conceptual framework, we will challenge existing norms in the field of development and present daring alternatives to help combat the challenges faced by international society today. Speakers this year include Mahmoud Mohieldin (Managing Director, World Bank), Jeffrey Sachs (live video conference, Director, Earth Institute Columbia University) and Lord Meghnad Desai (Emeritus Professor and Founder of Global Governance Institute LSE), amongst others. Check out www.wids.org.uk for a full list of speakers!
