intro • news in brief • gum clinic: tuesday week 10

Over Weeks 8 and 9, our clubs will be competing in the annual Varsity Series against Coventry University. With over 50 matches, 1000 competitors and 6000 spectators, it’s undoubtedly the biggest sporting event of the year - and the final event will be the Rugby on Saturday 9th March, followed by the After-Party in the SU! Thus far, Warwick have an undefeated record - however, in the last few years the final result has been incredibly close, so make sure you’re supporting Team Warwick to ensure we retain the Varsity title! Check out the promo video on the official Varsity website (www.warwicksu.com/varsity), along with information about fixtures and the history of the competition. There’s also £1000s worth of Nando’s vouchers to win - if that isn’t an incentive to get involved, I don’t know what is! #VarsityXIII #Team Warwick #Undefeated Natasha Cabral SPORTS OFFICER

news in brief officer elections 2013 After a week of feverish campaigning, we now have a new Sabbatical and Part-Time Officer team for the coming academic year! A massive thank you is in order to everyone who stood as a candidate or voted during Week 8 pending final approval, the provisional results are available now on the SU website. Find out who’ll be representing YOU in the SU next year!

the vagina monologues

week 9

Warwick Anti-Sexism Society proudly presents its annual production of The Vagina Monologues, performed, directed and produced by students from the University of Warwick. This award-winning play celebrates women’s sexuality and strength with humour and grace, and is based on writer Eve Ensler’s interviews with more than 200 women.

Tickets are available now online - just search ‘Vagina’ on the SU website (you know you want to)! All money raised will be donated to Coventry Rape and Sexual Abuse Centre and V-Day. Keep up to date via Twitter @VDayWarwick & Facebook (facebook.com/warwickvagmons2013).

warwick jailbreak - Race2Amsterdam Warwick Jailbreak’s Race2Amsterdam is a 36-hour rush to the famous Dutch capital. The catch? You’re not allowed to spend a single penny of your own money in getting from the University campus to the Venice of the North! Participants will have to use their guile, cunning and whatever else they can to get lifts, trains and (if you’re really lucky!) planes to their destination. As well as the main prize for those who arrive first, there’ll also be prizes for the bold souls who complete various fun challenges along the way. All this is in aid of Practical Action, who use technology to challenge poverty in the underdeveloped world! Almost £10,000 was raised by this event last year, but Jailbreak Society think they can do even better this time around - for more info about this incredible adventure visit warwickjailbreak.com!

tuesday week 10 There’ll be another chance to get yourself checked out for STIs (sexually-transmitted infections) on Tuesday 12th March in Meeting Rooms 4 & 5 of SUHQ between 12pm - 6pm - whether you’ve had protected or unprotected sex recently, this is the perfect opportunity to get a clean bill of health before heading home for the holidays! As always, it’s completely free, non-invasive and confidential, with no need to make an appointment - just turn up on the day and you’ll be seen. If you have any questions regarding this service, please contact welfare@warwicksu.com.

Help Us Help You

Survey 2013

Warwick SU is a non-profit membership organisation - we exist to provide a wealth of services to the student body, from Welfare and Representation to Clubs & Societies, Entertainments, Food & Beverage outlets and much more. We simply couldn’t function without your input and support - and so, as part of our annual feedback drive, we’re looking for YOUR responses to a comprehensive survey about everything the SU does. “Help us”, as Jerry Maguire once said, “Help you…!” This is YOUR chance to tell us directly what you think we’re doing right, where you think we’re going wrong, or how we can help make your student experience as enjoyable as it can be. All the feedback we receive is studied in detail by Sabbatical Officers and our staff team, and helps to shape the future direction of the SU - particularly our services, focuses and priorities for the coming years. This year’s membership survey will launch in Week 9, and will be available to fill out both online and in person around the SU building. Please take a few moments to complete the questionnaire if you get the chance - if you don’t tell us what you think, we won’t ever know!

This year’s Varsity Season is now firmly underway, with the sporting lads and lasses of Warwick having been administering their customary schooling to those chancers over at Cov ‘Uni’ during these last few weeks. The climax of this year’s tournament takes place on Saturday Week 9 (9th March) at the Butts Park Arena in Coventry, where our Rugby League and Rugby Union teams will be getting stuck into the scrum. Tickets include return transport (departing from the Piazza from 4.15pm until approximately 7pm) plus entry to the arena, and are available now online at www.warwicksu.com/varsity. After the win, of course, there’s the “aaaaaaaaaafterKick-offmeaning times are as it’s follows: paaaaaaaaarty”, that all back to ours | 17:30ofRUGBY UNION | 19:30 toRUGBY relive LEAGUE the nostalgia our Wednesday-night spectacular from days gone by: SCORE! In addition, Ultimate Frisbee will be taking part in the competition for the first time this year! Their match is on 6th March 2013 (Wednesday Week 9) at 1pm on the Varsity Pitches (opposite the Varsity bar) – they’d love as many proud Warwickians as possible to help drum up ferocious support for what will undoubtedly be an amazing hour of this truly different spectator sport!

For the second year running, Warwick SU is hosting the STARS of Warwick Awards, designed to recognise the members of University staff who you think go above and beyond the call of duty! Throughout Term 2, we’ve been asking you for your nominations - the judging panel is made up of 10 students, and they have now finalised the shortlist for each of the twelve different categories. Thanks to everyone who contributed to the nomination process - you can see the full shortlist online.
