intro • news in brief • go global fund

Greetings! Hamster here. I’m a new breed of intelligent superrodent, genetically engineered to be capable of human speech. Don’t quibble, just run with it. Week 8 is Elections Week at Warwick SU, which means that my fuzzy face will be enticing you to cast your vote for the people you want to run Warwick SU in 2013-14. “Why is this important?”, I hear you cry…? Put simply, because they represent YOU on a local, regional and national level, and work for you on a daily basis at the SU overseeing and directing different areas of our operations and strategy, including Education, Campaigning, Postgraduate issues, Welfare, Sports, Societies and more. You’ll be besieged all week by different candidates asking for your vote – make sure you listen to what they have to say, ask them any questions you may have and vote online for those who best represent your hopes, dreams, aspirations etc. And be sure to give my ears a stroke if you see me out and about – which you won’t, obviously, since I am an entirely fictional character. MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS WEEK 2013 Week 7 will see a host of events taking place to mark Mental Health Awareness Week, which aims to keep you educated and informed about a variety of issues related to your health and well-being. We’ll be looking to raise awareness and give support for those suffering from Mental Health problems, offering advice on how best to cope if you ever find yourself struggling - as well as looking to challenge and debunk many of the stigmas surrounding these common ailments. No booking will be required to take part in the sessions running throughout the day, so just come along and join in!

Highlights of the week include: Run annually by People & Planet society (in association with a host of other student clubs), Go Green Week is one of the student campaigning highlights of the year here at Warwick, offering you a direct opportunity to learn more about how you can play your part in helping to make society more sustainable and environmentally-friendly. Previous years’ programmes have included talks, film screenings, workshops, stalls, artwork and society performances, each taking place around a different theme throughout the week. Details of the full programme are still being finalised at the time of writing, but the 2013 event is currently scheduled to host a talk from the leader of the Green Party, Natalie Bennet, plus plenty of interactive displays and activities to look out for on campus during the week. vegetarian month menu at xananas

feedback@warwicksu.com R E S TA U R A N T

To mark Vegetarian Month though the UK, Xananas will be holding a special week’s worth of themed specials throughout Week 8. Whether you’re a carnivore or herbivore by nature, there’ll be something on offer to suit all tastebuds – come along and feel the benefits of a meat-free diet for a week, while tucking in to some succulent and sufficiently mouthwatering vegetarian specials! As always, don’t forget that all the money you spend in the SU’s food and drink outlets – Xananas, The Bread Oven, The Dirty Duck, The Copper Rooms and The Terrace Bar – is directly reinvested back into SU services for your benefit! For full menu details head to www.xananas.co.uk.

WSC: all-nighter friday week 7 Warwick Student Cinema will be taking over L3 for their termly film-viewing marathon on 22nd February, dishing up a tasty line-up of quality flicks throughout the night to test your moviegoing stamina. This term’s programme features Skyfall, American Beauty, Seven Psychopaths, ParaNorman, the MYSTERY FILM (as always, key under lock-and-key and revealed on the night!) and the incomparable masterpiece that is Indiana Jones & the Last Crusade. Needless to say – “No ticket”? Well, you know what happens if that’s the case…

you say... I lost something on campus! Will the SU have it?

we say... Check at Rootes Reception in the first instance, as that’s where it’ll go if not found directly in the SU – if you lost it in the Union, however, check at SUHQ.

you say... How do I set up a stall in the Atrium to promote my society activities?

we say...

For the uninitiated, Varsity Season takes place in Term 2 every year, and provides the sporting lads and lasses of Warwick with an ideal opportunity to dish out another casual whupping to our archrivals over at Cov Uni. We win every year, of course, but if they will insist on coming back for more… This year’s tournament begins on Monday of Week 8 as our Ice Hockey teams slide into action at Planet Ice in Coventry, and continues on Wednesday with the Snow Varsity competition. Have your best poly-bashing chants at the ready and head to www.warwicksu.com/varsity for all the latest updates - we don’t know if you’ve heard, but we’re kind of a big deal…

Email Jack Mason via jack.mason@warwicksu.com or pop in to see Jack in the Resources Room (top floor of SUHQ) and he should be able to help you out!
