intro • news in brief • housing day

Hey everyone! So it’s nearly the end of term and Christmas is on its way, but things are by no means wrapping up… in fact, there is a lot about to present itself... Coming up in Week 9 we have the ‘House Nouse’ Housing Day. There’s no need to be panicking about housing yet - there is always more housing than students, so make sure you take your time and get the right deal for you. On the day you can come and get advice about the houses in the local area, learn about what should and shouldn’t be in your contract, and Warwick Accommodation’s properties go live – meaning that you will have the chance to evaluate all your options. Week 9 is also Pride Week! This is a week run by our LGBTUA+ Officers and raises awareness of, and celebrates being lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans*, undefined or asexual. If you have any questions, do get in touch with the LGBTUA+ Officers via uc024@warwicksu.com or with me at welfare@warwicksu.com Ben WELFARE OFFICER

news in brief AIDS awareness week

week 9

UNICEF on Campus is organising the annual Warwick Aids Awareness Week, and this year they are hosting a carnival! The aim is to spread awareness and compassion while tackling social stigma and discrimination, and to give everyone a chance to be a part of the cause. Come along and have fun with activities such as face-painting and ribbon-making, as well as performances by EQHO, Salsa and many more! You can also find out about sexual health and medical help available on-campus, then join us in cheering for our models as they walk the ramp for a themed Fashion Show.

education convention

wednesday week 9

We are pleased to announce that this year’s first Education Convention will take place on Wednesday 28th November in MS.02 (Maths and Stats) from 3pm - 6.30pm. This is your opportunity to discuss issues and ideas with Sabbatical Officers, Faculty Representatives, senior University staff members and other students. There will also be sessions on SSLC best practice, Union campaigns for this year and the brand new SSLC portal. All SSLC reps should attend (particularly chairs and secretaries), and a light buffet will be provided. Please let us know if you are coming by signing up online at warwicksu.com/sslc or emailing samantha.sandilands@warwicksu.com.

Merry Christmas from Warwick SU! It’s been an amazing first term back, with one of the busiest Freshers periods in recent memory and loads of memorable events during the last ten weeks. On behalf of all the officers and staff here at Warwick Students’ Union, we wish you all the best for a happy festive season and prosperous new year – see page 4 for details of all our outlets’ opening hours over the coming week if you’re still about on campus! In the meantime, make sure you stay safe over holidays and we’ll see you in 2013 - don’t forget to watch Die Hard and Gremlins when they’re on telly, as nothing quite says Christmas like John McClane running round barefoot with a machine-gun or a load of beasties laying waste to Kingston Falls.

tues week 9 Every year we run a housing campaign here at the Union, with the aim of busting myths about student housing and helping to ensure that you don’t rush into decisions that you later come to regret. Make sure you come along to the Housing Day on Tuesday 27th November (Week 9) in the Atrium between 10am - 4pm to stay informed – this will be an ideal opportunity to get a first look at Warwick Accommodation’s properties, weight up several different housing options and get all the information you need about living off-campus from our Advice & Welfare Team.

week 9 schedule Monday 26th november 1pm - The director of Trans Media Watch is coming to speak about the portrayal of trans people in the media, how to protect yourself, and how to improve the situation.

postgraduates who teach survey Are you a Postgraduate student who teaches? If so, then we want to hear from YOU! The NUS is working with SUs across the country and the UCU to launch a nationwide survey of postgraduate teachers, covering a number of contentious areas including pay, contracts, application process, workload, training and feedback. We know that there is wide disparity in the treatment of postgraduate students who teach at their universities what we don’t have is comprehensive national data on the issue. This lack of data for national comparisons has prevented the spread of good practice and the public acknowledgement of unfair treatment! This survey is a real chance to make a difference, and it allows us to lobby the University here at Warwick for better conditions - to complete the survey head to www.surveymonkey.com/s/NUSPGteach
