intro • news in brief • warwick su puts its foot down

Welcome to The Bubble - The definitive guide to everything happening in your Union this fortnight. We’ll be delivering it to your halls, putting it on the buses and dropping it off in the Union for your perusal. Make sure you check out the listings on the back to know what’s going on; you can also keep up-to-date with news on this page and enter our competition on the back to win some prizes. Week 3 is your chance to vote in this year’s Autumn Elections - make sure you take the time to have your say in who should be on Union Council this year. There’s also ‘Higher Fees? The Big Debate’ this week – pop along and find out how your education could be at risk this year. Week 4 sees the Halloween ‘End of the World’ Party – make sure you get your tickets early to avoid disappointment and get involved with the Community Reps Scheme by coming to the info session.

news in brief browne review: putting higher education out of reach The Browne Review’s recommendations of unlimited fees will cause the cost of a University education to spiral. It’s time for you to join us as Warwick SU puts its foot down. Join us at ‘Higher Fees? The Big Debate’ on Tuesday 19th October in the Atrium at 5pm to hear the views of NUS National President Aaron Porter, Economics Professor Robin Naylor and Education Officer Sean Ruston.

do something amazing – give blood! Sign up in the Arts Centre on Wednesday 20th October to give blood on campus this term. The Blood Drive will be on the 10th November but you must register in advance.

nightline sign-up Are you a good listener? Fancy lending an ear? Sign up for Nightline in the Nightline Block (between Old and New Rootes) on the 18th and 19th October.

jailbreak 36 hours, no money, how far can you go? The popular charity hitch-hiking event is back this term. In the past teams have reached Egypt, Vancouver and Morocco. How far can you go? Sign up now at www.warwickjailbreak.com.

rag - choose a challenge

As ever, if you’ve got any feedback, questions or concerns drop into SUHQ and we’ll see what we can do to help.

Where will your challenge take you this year? There’s something for everyone, from doing the 3 Peaks Challenge to going on a road-trip to Bratislava – all in aid of charity! If you’re interested visit www.warwickrag.com or pop along to the Atrium, 6pm on Tuesday 26th October.

Be part of it.

weekly indoor markets

Chris Luck

They’re back! Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday during term time make sure you head on down to the Atrium to grab a bargain. There are lots fo different stalls to choose between, from CDs and clothing to freshly prepared food and fine jewellery.

Sign up now for the NUS-UCU National Demo in Central London on 10/11/10 and join us as Warwick SU puts its foot down. The potential cuts to Higher Education put your library at risk, damage the future of your sports clubs and could see entire departments under threat. This cannot be allowed to happen. Coach places are heavily subsidised and will cost £5 to get you there and back, sign up now at www.warwicksu.com/demo2010.

brain teasers • win win win!

brain teasers #1: the riddle

#2: university challenge test

There is an island, its inhabitants are all perfect logicians (if there is a logical conclusion they will instantly deduce it). No one knows the colour of their eyes, there are no mirrors or reflective surfaces on the island and the waters surrounding it are too murky to show a reflection. Every night at midnight, a ferry stops at the island. Any islanders who have figured out their own eye colour leave the island, and the rest stay. Everyone can see all the other islanders at all times and keeps a count of the number of people they see with each eye colour, but they cannot otherwise communicate. Everyone on the island knows these rules and abides by them. 100 islanders have blue eyes, 100 have brown and the shaman has green eyes. The islanders do not know how many people there are of each eye colour, so a blue-eyed islander would be able to see 100 people with brown eyes and 99 with blue but for all they know they could have blue, brown, green, grey or red eyes. The only islander allowed to speak is the shaman and only on one auspicious day when the planets are correctly aligned. On that day the Shaman says: ‘I can see someone who has blue eyes.’ Qu. Who leaves the island, and on what night?
