Warwick Fringe Festival 2017

Welcome to Warwick On Friday 23rd June, the first ever Warwick Fringe Festival will be coming to campus! Please do join us for a fun-filled day of student performances - if you aren’t able to make it along, your wonderful student radio station RAW will be livestreaming the day on their Facebook and Twitter pages. As you walk around campus you will find two outdoor stages playing host to over 30 student performances throughout the day. The full programme of outdoor performances can be found on pages 2 and 3 of this programme. As you will see, there is something for absolutely everyone - from hip hop to opera! Inside the Warwick Arts Centre a total of 7 student groups will be previewing the productions that they are taking to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival this August. Warwick students tend to have very successful runs in Edinburgh so this is a great opportunity for you to see some quality student work before everyone else. Flick through pages 5 - 7 to see the full line-up of the Edinburgh Fringe preview performances. If any of them take your fancy, you can go and collect a FREE ticket to any of the performances from the Warwick Arts Centre Box Office throughout the day. If you snap any photos on the day or have something to say about our campus creativity, remember to tag us in any posts using #CreativeWarwick!

All the best, Marissa Societies Officer 2016/17 Warwick Students’ Union

Reactivists are an emerging theatre company based at Warwick. We aim to make responsive, socially-conscious work that pushes theatre’s capacity to react to and engage with contemporary society. We want to use theatre as a platform for creating dialogues and enacting change.

'Let's all celebrate and have a good time’ - Kool and the Gang

Our current project is ‘Hear All about It’, which aims to test the responsiveness and relevance of theatre. Each week, the Reactivists create a newly devised show, directly responding to and interrogating the news of the week before. In a world of 24-hour news, Twitter and Netflix, what is theatre’s capacity to respond to the world around us? Can theatre still be an effective tool for reaction, response and discussion? Two companies work in REP, to create a conversation about theatre, society and (probably) Donald Trump. The team behind ‘Hear All About It’ are grateful recipients of the 2017 Lord Rootes Memorial Fund.

The world’s been getting us down lately. It feels like everything is slowly unravelling, a ball of string hurtling down a hill in painful slow-motion, everyone clutching the frayed end of the roll as if that were helping. The future is murky and uncertain. Amidst global crises and 24-hour rolling news, we’re taking Kool and the Gang’s advice. Part-theatre, part-dance party, part-funeral, CELEBRATION aims to give anyone who can’t quite believe the world they live in, something to believe in.

About to take the Edinburgh Fringe by storm once again this summer, the Improv musical mayhem leaves you roaring with laughter! Create the characters, setting and even the show title - watch your ideas come to life, complete with memorable tunes, catchy lyrics, and the occasional dance routine. The show really is in your hands! "A total rollicking hoot!" (A Younger Theatre) Please note that this production involves flashing lights.

Roaming Collisions | Lamplit | 17:50 | 30 mins | 12+ years | Theatre | Clown, Physical theatre Noun: 1) A chance encounter. 2) A walking disaster. 3) An exploration of collisions, connections and communication. A show filled with clowning, movement and a realisation of how complicated relationships can become. Example: As the great prophet Jim Morrison tells us, “people are strange, when you’re a stranger”, and meeting new people creates all kind of misunderstandings - some sad, some funny. But we don’t want to be sad, so instead we’re inviting you to Roaming Collisions: a space for games, dancing and silliness where we can laugh at our mistakes and cry at our victories. Lamplit are a company of three friends who met at Warwick University who have been described as “reasonably funny”, “ridiculous dancers” and “very loud, could you please keep the noise down”. So we're bringing our dancing from the club and our joking from our kitchen to make fools of ourselves on stage for (hopefully) your enjoyment.

Where to find them at EdFringe 5th – 27th August (not 14th – 16th) | 19:10 | Serenity Café, PBH Free Fringe| Tickets free

Thoughts That Count | Warwick Comedy Society | 18:40 | 60 mins | 18+ years | Comedy | Comedy, Stand-up The Warwick Comedy Society present their not-so-debut stand-up show, 'Thoughts That Count': a mixed bill night of student comedians who maybe one day will actually count for something. Until then, here are their thoughts. Featuring two Chortle Student Comedy finalists and two semi-finalists, Warwick Comedy Society has some of the brightest young talent in the Midlands. “All who performed were very witty and responded well to my frankly awful heckling. 5 stars out of 5.” (Audience Member, Edinburgh Fringe 2016)

Where to find them at EdFringe 5th – 18th August | 22:40 | Canons Gait, PBH Free Fringe | Tickets free

COVENTRY IS BIDDING TO BE UK CITY OF CULTURE 2021

Creative Warwick 2017 is a campus-wide celebration of the 250+ student societies at Warwick. Taking place each month from January 2017 through to the end of June, there has been something for everyone to get involved with or watch.

WE NEED YOU TO

Led by Warwick Students’ Union, in partnership with Warwick Arts Centre and the University of Warwick, Creative Warwick showcases all the incredible things our societies get up to. Our student-led societies involve over 7,500 Warwick students and are renowned for being creative, innovative, enterprising and diverse. As a collective, societies at Warwick consistently raise hundreds of thousands of pounds for charity, help their members develop a wide range of skills and put on thousands of fantastic events throughout the year – including socials, conferences, performances, discussion panels and balls. Creative Warwick aims to celebrate and raise awareness of the activities of our Societies, providing a platform for greater levels of engagement across campus with staff, prospective students and members of the local community. By raising awareness of the creativity inherent to our student Societies, we aim to encourage a discussion around the theme ‘What is creativity?’ – and, furthermore, what can we do to foster it across all generations? Thank you to everyone who has helped to make the first Warwick Fringe Festival a reality. Particular thanks must go to Jane Batchelor, Julia Carruthers, Jade Mobley, Katie Reid, Charlotte Ridley and Alan Rivett for supporting Creative Warwick right from the very beginning!
