The Definitive Guide to Global Opportunities at the University of Warwick

Guide 2012-13

Guide 2012-13

Every student can have a truly global experience while studying at Warwick. To help this happen, Go Global is a Students’ Union and University-based initiative designed to get students thinking globally. Studying abroad is the ultimate international experience Warwick provides- to help you work out where you might want to go, this booklet provides information on the universities we work with across the world. If studying abroad isn’t for you, don’t worry – there are still many opportunities to Go Global on campus and we can show you how! Remember, over 36% of Warwick’s student population comes from outside of the UK, representing 151 different nationalities - without a doubt, overseas and EU students contribute incalculably to the pulse and vibe of campus!

Introduction and Welcome Silkie Cragg

Societies Officer, Warwick SU 2012-13 Before running to be Societies Officer I studied Philosophy, Politics and Economics at Warwick. Alongside PPE I studied French in the Language Centre, spent a year abroad in Grenoble, played the oboe in the Symphony Orchestra and performed in Delhi, and was on the exec committee for World@Warwick coordinating cross-society international events. My first-hand experience of international student life inspired me to encourage as many students as possible to get thinking globally!

Professor Nigel Thrift

Vice-Chancellor of the University of Warwick It is our belief that at Warwick every student is an international student. By this we mean that all students, from whatever country or discipline, emerge from Warwick as global citizens, international rather than insular in knowledge, skills and outlook. This guide provides an introduction to the many opportunities available to our students to develop their ability to operate effectively across cultures and, in so doing, increase their employability and enrich their own personal experience. Whether through working as part of a multicultural team on campus or spending time on an exchange programme overseas, I would encourage you to make the most of your time as a Warwick student and take every opportunity to Go Global. 3

Sports Clubs

Warwick Sport endeavours to facilitate a multi-cultural sporting experience and to create a competitive but fun sporting environment for all students. However, some sports are inevitably more international than others – for instance, Floorball and Handball were established here by international students! Traditionally American sports, Lacrosse and American Football, are extremely popular at Warwick too… but if you want a truly international sporting experience at Warwick, sign up for an informal team in the Ernst and Young inter-mural leagues – any group of students can come together, and year on year the demographics are so diverse that we can host our own World Cup! Erasmus

As a leading international university, Warwick has partner institutions throughout Europe and the world. In a globalised economy, language and intercultural skills have never been more important, and time spent abroad can help you develop these skills as well as provide you with new perspectives.

Erasmus is the European Commission’s flagship educational exchange programme for University students, teachers and institutions. It was introduced with the aim of increasing student mobility within Europe, and gives many European university students their first chance to live abroad. Warwick is one of the UK’s largest users of the Erasmus programme with - unusually for the UK - as many students going out as coming in (350+ per year). The Erasmus programme is open to ALL Warwick undergraduate and postgraduate students. Students have the opportunity to take up a study placement or a work placement of 3-12 months’ duration, which is taken as part of your Warwick degree. For more details on Erasmus, visit: warwick.ac.uk/study/studyabroad/outgoing/erasmus 12

Exchanges There are a number of exchange agreements which are not part of the ERASMUS scheme, with universities outside Europe. The exchanges that are available to you depend on the academic department in which you are based. Exchange agreements are between academic departments atWarwick and the equivalent departments or faculties at partner universities.

Each year we send around 100 students for a year of study abroad. Warwick’s exchange countries include: Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, Greece, Finland, France, Hungary, India, Israel, Italy, Ireland, Japan, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Barbados, Hong Kong, Singapore, Slovenia, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey and USA. The Warwick Venice Programme Third year History and History of Art students can study in Venice for the first term. This allows you to enjoy a sustained period of study ‘on-site’ in Venice based in our own teaching premises: the Palazzo Pesaro-Pepafava, a fifteenthcentury palazzo near the Grand Canal. Warwick has close links with the University of Venice Ca’ Foscari and our students have access to facilities such as its libraries, language centre and student canteens. There is also a ‘buddy scheme’ which teams Warwick and University of Venice students, encouraging an even greater immersion in local life.

Monash-Warwick Alliance In 2011 Warwick signed an agreement with Monash University in Melbourne, Australia, to create an alliance which aims to establish both institutions as globally connected universities. The MonashWarwick Alliance pioneers a new model of engagement between research-led institutions across the world, encompassing students, staff, governments and industry and offering new methods of research and teaching to meet future global challenges. This strategic alliance has already created some exciting studentled projects including Green Steps, Monash University’s awardwinning sustainability education programme, which ran its first international course for students at Warwick in July and October 2012 and the co-production of Reinvention, Warwick’s on-line peer-reviewed journal, dedicated to the publication of high-quality undergraduate student research from all disciplinary areas. Many more innovative joint degree programmes and projects are currently being planned, including a joint Monash-Warwick PhD.

13 16

The Alliance has also expanded Warwick’s study abroad offer and in 2012-13, 16 Warwick undergraduates will spend either part or all of their academic year at Monash. In return, Warwick will welcome 16 students from Monash at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Details on how to apply are available from the Study Abroad Coordinator in your department.

On an extra-curricular level, the Alliance is also thriving. After a rigorous application and presentation process, four Warwick Sport Clubs have been selected to participate in the first Varsity Series between the two universities. In addition to travelling to Melbourne to play matches against Monash University, our sports clubs will have the opportunity to share training sessions, attend lectures, coach in a local school, fundraise for an Australian charity and attend skills sessions with PricewaterhouseCoopers. The clubs who will be representing Warwick are Women’s Netball, Swimming & Water Polo, Ladies Hockey and Men’s Football. Recognition Global Advantage Award Develop the skills global employers are seeking! Employers are keen to hire graduates who can demonstrate that they can effectively communicate, interact and build effective working relationships with people from different cultures and countries. Even if you are based in the UK, you may need to contribute to global projects and manage international teams. The Global Advantage Award is an elite award for current Warwick students who provide evidence that they have developed capabilities highly valued by global employers: openness and flexibility, coping with setbacks, a spirit of adventure, the ability to communicate across cultures and build strong inter-cultural working relationships, and the confidence to articulate what has been learned from inter-cultural experience(s). It is a great opportunity to reflect on and capture your capabilities and skills in preparation for employer applications. 40 hours or more of significant intercultural interaction are required. Eligible activities include: work experience or volunteering outside your home country; collaborative international research projects; voluntary work in your home country involving significant interaction with multicultural groups; or significant intercultural involvement in campus activities with students of other nationalities/cultures. Students use the knowledge and understanding gained during the Global Advantage process to demonstrate their potential to work internationally.
