WELCOME TO WARWICK SU!

WARWICKSU.COM/POSTGRADS

Warwick SU is YOUR Students’ Union! As a student at the University, you automatically become member of the SU – and we are here for you throughout your time here. Warwick SU is a democratic, independent organisation which exists to represent, support and entertain students. The SU is run on a daily basis by seven elected Sabbatical Officers (‘Sabbs’), each with a specific remit. As your elected officers, they are here to represent you, raise your concerns, and provide you with help and advice. In short, the SU is here to help students get the best experience possible while studying at the University of Warwick. Welcome to Warwick! My name is Nat and I’m your Postgraduate Officer. The SU takes postgraduate matters seriously and is one of only a handful of SUs in the country with a Postgraduate Officer. I am here to represent and support postgraduates, convey postgraduate issues to the University and wider community, and to help you make the most of your time at Warwick. Postgraduates make up almost 50% of the student population at Warwick and, as a postgrad, you are part of a vibrant and diverse community. The SU recognises that postgraduate life differs to that of undergraduates, and also that postgrad study can be more challenging and intense. However, it’s important to remember that there’s a lot more to being a postgrad than just academic work. The SU is here to help you make the most of your studies but also your time outside of your academic life.

HERE ARE MY TOP 5 THINGS THAT ALL WARWICK POSTGRADS SHOULD KNOW ABOUT. YOU CAN FIND MUCH MORE INFORMATION IN THE REST OF THIS GUIDE AND ONLINE! 1. SU ADVICE CENTRE. If you have a problem or just need some guidance, the SU Advice Centre is here for you. Check warwicksu.com/advice or email advice@warwicksu.com.

2. SOCIETIES. With over 250 societies at Warwick, there’s a huge range of activities to take part in. Last year, thousands of postgrads joined our societies! Choose your societies at warwicksu. com/societies.

3. SPORTS. Warwick Sport offers everything from casual sport to fitness and competitive play. With over 60 sports clubs, postgraduate and staff sessions, swimming pool and climbing wall, there’s something for everyone! Find activities to suit you at warwicksu.com/sports.

5. PG SPACES! Visit the SU’s dedicated postgrad space, The Graduate, for events, food, drink and relaxation. Study at the Postgraduate Hub in Senate House or, for research students, find the Wolfson Research Exchange (REx) on Floor 3 of the Library. As the Postgraduate Officer, it is my job to make sure that the postgraduate voice is heard and I will fight to make sure that postgraduates have the best experience they can at Warwick. Feel free to get in touch, and I wish you the very best for the year ahead!

4. REPRESENTATION. Make sure your voice is heard. Stand to be on your Student-Staff Liaison Committee, run for the SU Postgrad Exec, and vote online in termly referenda with All Student Meetings (ASMs). Find out more at warwicksu. com/democracy or email democracy@ warwicksu.com about elections.

HELPS YOU DIRECTLY AFFECT HOW YOUR UNION IS RUN.

All Student Meetings

Referenda

Every student has an equal voice - this is the principle underpinning Warwick Students’ Union’s democratic structures. The All Student Meeting is a chance for any student to have their voice heard and to vote on policies they want to see implemented in the future. Any student can speak out for or against a particular motion during the meeting. Once all motions have been addressed, you can cast your vote online.

6

Postgrad Faculty Reps have a seat on their respective Faculty Board as well as the Board of Graduate Studies committee – these are the highest decision-makers on Postgraduate issues. Faculty Reps also get invited to all of the Course Representatives’ committees within their Faculty and meet a wide variety of people at the University.

Course Reps Course Representatives sit on committees with staff and senior academics within your department. These committees are your opportunity to discuss any concerns that you may have with your course, study facilities or the University at large. This gives you the opportunity to have a direct say in how your department will run. The elections are run at departmental level, so watch out for information during your induction if you’re interested in getting involved!
