At Warwick SU we have been listening to your feedback and have made some substantial changes over the summer to make your SU experience even better. Following your feedback in last year’s Help Us Help You survey, we have recruited new members of staff to increase our focus on academic representation, as well as a new Web Design Assistant to develop society webpages. Venue-wise, we have a newlook Copper Rooms 2 as well as a brand new fortnightly Friday night event, Drop, which will take you to the absolute cutting-edge of house and electronic music. The Dirty Duck boasts new comfier seating, while Curiositea will also host a new national touring acoustic showcase, the Coffee House Sessions. We’ve also upgraded the soundsystem in The Duck and will be relaunching all our evening events in our campus pub so that they’re bigger and better than ever before! All the staff at Warwick SU have been working hard to listen to your feedback and make changes for you. We hope you like it! WWW.WARWICKSU.COM 2

PRESIDENT BEN SUNDELL

Hi! My name is Ben Sundell and I’m your SU President. My job is to represent YOU! My personal priorities this year are to get all your lectures recorded so that you can listen to them again, to increase the work we do in the local community through volunteering projects, and to further develop the University and SU’s Widening Participation Agendas. If you have any questions, please just ask, send me an email or drop by!

EDUCATION OFFICER ERIN DAVIES

Hi, I’m your Education Officer. I’ve been here four years studying Law and Sociology, and have spent three years involved in the Union, working in the outlets and being involved in loads of socs, sports and committees – I’m a MASSIVE fan of our SU! I’m here to help on all things Educational, so get in touch if you need me – pop into the office or send me an email, I’m always happy to chat.

POSTGRAD OFFICER LUCY GILL

After completing my Undergrad degree in History at Warwick, I decided to stay on to complete a Masters in the same department. As Postgraduate Officer, I’m here to make sure that Postgraduates are just as involved in campus life as Undergraduates. I also oversee any academic concerns you may have as Taught or Research students – if you have any issues, pop into my office or send me an email!

DEMOCRACY & DEV. OFFICER COSMO MARCH

Since my first term in 2009 I’ve kept myself busy by working in the Union’s various bars, pubs and clubs. All these amazing experiences have helped shape who I am today, and my advice to students is to get involved in as much as possible! In the meantime, please come and see me if you have any suggestions as to how we can make your SU even better.

WELFARE OFFICER CAT TURHAN

Welcome back! I’m Cat, and I’m responsible for looking after the Welfare Services in the Students’ Union. If you have accommodation problems, immigration queries, transport, sexual/mental health issues or you want to be involved with student campaigning, I’m the person to talk to. I have a welcoming office with lots of tea, so please come by or drop me an email to let me know how I can help!

SOCIETIES OFFICER ANT SCOTT

Hi, I’m Ant and I’m your new Societies Officer! Societies have been a defining part of my University experience - I’ve been able to climb Kilimanjaro, cycle from London to Paris, perform in front of thousands of people and help raise hundreds of thousands of pounds for charity. It’s never too late to get involved with a new society – with over 240 available, there’s truly something for everyone!

SPORTS OFFICER ZOE BUCKLAND

Sport has really shaped my time at Warwick and made for an incredible University experience. I’m super-excited to be even more involved this year because I’m really passionate about getting everyone participating in sport at some level – be it at high-level competitions, occasional keep-fit sessions, adrenaline-fuelled weekend trips or just a kick-about with your flatmates. I’ll always try my best to deliver what you want!

Lots of exciting developments and refurbishments have been taking place while you’ve been on holiday – here’s a brief overview of what you can expect when you get back!

We have given Room 2 an overhaul to bring it more in line with the kind of setting you expect from a nightclub, as well as introducing a brand new studentled house and electronic music event, Drop, every fortnight.

New, comfier seating and an upgraded soundsystem have been installed as per your feedback, and we’ll be relaunching all our evening events to make sure they are as enjoyable as possible for a relaxing evening in the pub!

NEW STAFF We’ve recruited an Education Policy Manager to help focus our attention on one of the main areas of concern for students: academic representation. The Marketing Team will also be welcoming a new Web Design Assistant, who will be maintaining and developing all your society pages on the SU website!

SU BUILDING We’ve also updated all of the signage around the Students’ Union so that it’s hopefully much easier to find what you are looking for!

Look out for a new fortnightly event, Coffee House Sessions, which is brought to you in association with the UK’s top talent agencies and curated by Radio 1’s new music guru, Huw Stephens. Living off-campus can be a daunting experience, especially if you’re doing so for the first time. This is just a basic guide for everyone who’s going to be based in Coventry, Leamington, Kenilworth and beyond this year to ensure you have a fantastic time – don’t forget, the Union is here for you just as much as when you lived on campus, and we’ll do everything we can to advise, protect and support you with any problems you have. Let us help you make the most out of the year and the community you live in!

YOUR RIGHTS The Union offers a FREE and CONFIDENTIAL Advice Service in SUHQ which has years of experience dealing with housing (as well as lots of other areas). If you have any problems, get in touch. They are here to HELP YOU!

YOUR RESPONSILIBITIES

advice@warwicksu.com 024 7657 2824

Your landlord is normally responsible for repairs, including central heating, leaking roofs etc. If you’re not sure who is responsible, get advice straight away. The landlord should not enter your home without giving reasonable notice and with your consent, except in an emergency.

Full-time students do not normally pay council tax – if you are asked by the local council to pay council tax, get advice straight away.

The previous residents may not have fully paid their bills – take photos of meter readings, and inform utility companies of the reading and date you moved in. Take photos of your property with a camera that prints dates to show the condition of the property when you moved in – these are helpful for getting your deposit back at the end of the year.

Make sure that you update your medical info – whether you register locally or continue to use the Campus Health Centre, make sure you have your right address with your GP. If you want to watch any live broadcast TV, you need to buy a license. However, if you want to watch catch-up stuff on your laptop, you don’t. Check whether your contract covers Contents Insurance – and, if not, get yourself covered. Keep your windows and doors locked when you aren’t there. If you have any concerns with your house’s safety, again, get in touch with us. Check your deposit is protected by a Deposit Protection Scheme - it should be written on your tenancy agreement.

What is really important is that we value, respect and contribute to the community around us when we move off-campus. The amazing part is that you are surrounded by lots of different types of people and opportunities, and you have a great chance to make a positive impact whilst you are there.

Meet your neighbours! As daunting as it can be for you to move into your new home, your neighbours may be nervous too. You have a fantastic opportunity to meet new people and families who live locally to you - pop round and introduce yourself, and get to know them. We want you to enjoy the vibrant nightlife that Leamington or Coventry have to offer – just remember that your house is always very close to family and elderly housing too. When you are coming home from a night out, please try and keep the noise down and respect your neighbours. Put your rubbish out on the correct days, and don’t let it build up outside the front of your house – not only is it an eyesore, but you could get fined by the Council. Get involved in your local community! The Warwick SU Love Community campaign, Warwick Volunteers, and many societies do so much good for their local areas – whether it’s running soup kitchens, cleaning up or working in schools. Don’t let your year pass without taking the opportunity to make a difference where you live with students and locals alike.
