Sabb Blab Welcome back! I hope you’ve all had a very relaxing break, that Santa’s been good to you and that you’re ready to hit this term hard. This is when it all starts kicking off: essays are due, dissertations need to be started and projects begin coming together quicker than The A-Team’s proverbial plan (unlike that, however, we’re assuming yours won’t be constructed from an old car engine, a few crisp packets and a discarded machine gun).

SU Education Officer

Hopefully you’ll start getting some feedback from your lecturers soon, and I’d love to hear all about that. In Week 4, I’ll be launching our Hungry for Feedback campaign - watch out for this, as it’s guaranteed to be extremely entertaining! That week will also see the second Education Convention of this year - I have some really great guests coming along to be quizzed mercilessly by you lot, so I look forward to seeing everyone there. Good luck keeping all those New Year’s Resolutions (see page 6) – I may have already broken mine… - Erin Davies

news in brief Opera Warwick presents Don Giovanni – Week 2 Get ready to be charmed and captivated by Opera Warwick’s new English reworking of Mozart’s Don Giovanni. Watch as the schemes and machinations of the legendary smooth-talking misogynist unfurl in a 1960s mafia world, where Don Giovanni will steal, lie, charm and manipulate to get who and what he wants. It’s a plot driven by revenge and lust in which heroes are anything but heroic. Following their triumphant production of Cinderella: The Opera last year, this is sure to be another popular show from one of our award-winning student societies! It will run in the Arts Centre Theatre at 7:30pm each day from Thursday 16th – Saturday 18th January, with tickets priced at £10, £8.50 and £7 for students (available now at the Arts Centre box office).

Postgraduate welcome events - Week 2 A very warm welcome to all new Postgraduate students who are joining us this term! If you’re looking to get to know your fellow Postgrads, there will be a social reception for all PGR students at the PG Hub on Thursday 16th January (Week 2) from 6pm-7:30pm – this will provide a networking opportunity for all PGR students and an opportunity to re-visit relevant central service departments. It will also give newer students access to peer support! There will then be a Welcome Back / New Year’s drinks event for all PGR students at The Terrace Bar in the SU from 7:30pm-late. Want to see your society event featured in a future issue? Email chris.carter@warwicksu.com with all the details!

Term 2 Preview We had a fantastic final week of festive events last term, with Pop!, the Christmas Ball and the End of Term Foam Party all absolutely packed to see us out in grand style! Just because we’re over the hectic hurdle of Term 1, however, it doesn’t mean we’re slowing down here at the Union - on the contrary, Term 2 will see even more student-run events taking place over the next 10 weeks. Here’s a sneak preview of what’s in store this term…

Following their awesome launch party Origins last term, the mighty ONE WORLD WEEK will return in Week 3, bringing you the perfect opportunity to explore the various cultures which make up Warwick’s diverse student body. With an amazing programme of evening events, performances, talks, workshops and the famous One World Week Fashion Show to savour, make sure you get stuck in as our societies bring a flavour of the wider world right to your doorstep! Bandsoc’s annual BATTLE OF THE BANDS tournament will also be rearing its beastly head again as nearly 30 student acts amp up in the hope of reaching the Grand Final in Week 10. Who will follow in the footsteps of last year’s winners Nurse Joy and open up the Main Stage at this year’s Summer Party for us in Term 3? Find out in Copper Rooms 2 as the heats kick off from Week 3 onwards… For sports fans, we’ll be holding a special live screening of the SUPER BOWL on Sunday of Week 4, while our teams will be gearing up for another shot at the VARSITY title in the latter half of term. Will Cov Uni be able to snatch it away from us for the first time in history? Let’s face it, I think we know the answer to that one already… All this plus the massive REAL ALE FESTIVAL in Week 6, together with our various campaign weeks – this term including Disability Awareness Week, Sexual Health Awareness Week and Women’s Week. It’s going to be another great term – we look forward to seeing you out and about!

SABBS’ NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS ’Tis the season to make promises you no doubt won’t be able to keep after a few days’ worth of trying… but please, let’s not have that get in the way of a few of our Sabb team’s fairly dubious New Year’s Resolutions:

Erin Davies Education Officer

Lucy Gill Postgraduate Officer

Ben Sundell President

Cat Turhan Welfare Officer

I will stop impulse-buying Twinings. Frankly, I’m running out of room in both my kitchen and my office. Hashtag tea horder.

I will limit myself to listening to Rick Springfield’s all-conquering 1983 album Working Class Dog in the office just once a week. It’s going to be tough.

I pledge to stop listening to Little Mix [n.b. this entry was submitted on Ben’s behalf by another member of the Sabb team, who understandably wishes to remain anonymous].

I pledge to wear some proper trousers to work, as opposed to the glorified hot-pants I’ve been sporting thus far.

community In the last week of Term 1, a group of student volunteers led by SU President Ben Sundell and Welfare Officer Cat Turhan trekked over to Leamington on a wintry Sunday morning to help rid the canal of some of the rubbish which has accumulated in its waters and hedges. This is one of several events we’ll be running as part of our Love Community social action programme this year – thanks to everyone who got involved, and keep an eye on the SU website for details of upcoming events! FEEDBACK you say... “Can we get an Eating@Warwick top-up machine in the SU to make it easier to use our cards in the Union’s outlets?”

we say... You can indeed! This was part of SU President Ben Sundell’s campaign manifesto this year - we’re pleased to announce that, after speaking to the University, this has now gone up outside The Bread Oven.

How to give us your feedback: * Email feedback@warwicksu.com with your thoughts * Email enquiries@warwicksu.com with your questions * Fill out a paper form in one of our outlets * Click the ‘Have Your Say’ link on the SU homepage!

you say... “Look. Can we get some microwaves on campus to heat our food up?!”

we say... YES! After years of trying to get this sorted, there will be an announcement regarding this very shortly – keep checking back to the SU website in the coming weeks!

Pam Walker: UNION LEGEND Thursday 12th December marked the end of an era here at the Students’ Union: our much-loved Societies matriarch PAM WALKER retired after 25 years of dedicated service. If a newly-crowned Darth Vader were here, he would surely articulate the innermost thoughts of all of us by dropping to one knee and wailing: “Noooooooo…!” A true lynchpin of the organisation, Pam had this to say from her throne (let’s face it, it’s a throne) up in the Resources Room of SUHQ: “I’ve really enjoyed working with the students here at the Union – they always make my day, and they’ve kept me young over the years!” Pam, we hardly knew ye. You helped us with our planning packs when all else had failed. You pointed us in the right direction when we wanted to hire a minibus. You gave us details of innumerable account codes. You helped with the budgeting process. You sported an utterly impeccable blonde bob (and even the occasional leopard-print blouse). Pam will be heading off on a couple of much-needed international holiday treks before figuring out her plans for the future – in the meantime, Indy Sanghera will be taking over her duties on a temporary basis until we find a full-time replacement. Much like Wile E. Coyote running through a wall, there’ll forever be a great big Pam-shaped hole in our hearts here at the Union. In short, on behalf of all staff and students: Wham, Bam… THANK YOU, PAM!
