Hi guys! There’s loads of great sporting events on during Weeks 5 & 6 – in addition to the regular Hall Sports programme on Tuesday nights (this fortnight featuring Football, Basketball and Lifestyle Taster Sessions), there’s the famous Zombie Run to look forward on 29th October! Ever fancied getting fit by evading hordes of marauding undead around campus? Well, now you can! See the Warwick Sport website for full details. I’ve also just started finalising plans for next term’s Varsity tournament, as well as the Discover Disabled Sport day later this term (Saturday 22nd November) – watch this space for more information coming soon! Week 5 sees us getting all spooky here at the SU – we have special food offers on in The Bread Oven, Curiositea and Xananas, as well as the massive Halloween Ball courtesy of our new Friday night, Flirt! If, like me, you’re also a huge fan of the Ramones and have a T-shirt from Primark to prove it, you’ll also no doubt fancy rocking out at Crash on Saturday of Week 6. Have a great fortnight! - RUBY COMPTON-DAVIES

news in brief Housing Day photo competition – launching Week 5

Once again, we’re looking for your photos for this year’s Housing Day – this year we have two categories: ‘Housing Horrors’ and ‘The Street Where I Live’. Get snapping for a chance to win Xananas meal vouchers, Bread Oven meal deals and drinks vouchers for Curiositea! The submission deadline is Tuesday Week 8, and photos can be emailed to ilivehere@warwicksu.com.

Duke of Edinburgh Society events – Week 5

The D of E society here at Warwick are running two events this fortnight – an info session on Monday 27th October from 6-7pm (location TBC), together with a ‘Stratford on Sunday’ trip on 2nd November. For more information, visit www.warwick.ac.uk/dofesoc.

Good Food Society Bake-Off – Saturday Week 5

Unleash your competitive side on Saturday 1st November at Warwick’s best bake-off! Enter the Good Food Society’s competition with anything savoury you have baked, or just come along to indulge in everyone else’s creations between 7-9pm in SUHQ Meeting Rooms 4/5. Tickets are available now via the SU website, and the winner will receive a personalised Good Food Soc hoody!

Jailbreak – Saturday/Sunday Week 5

M W

“Tonight there’s going to be a jailbreak”, Thin Lizzy once wrote, “somewhere in this town” (probably at the jail, one imagines). If Phil Lynott were more creative, however, he’d try to get as far away from campus as possible by hitch-hiking without spending any money – as hundreds of Warwick students will be doing when Jailbreak 2014 launches at 10am on Saturday 1st November! There’s still time to get involved for a registration fee of £16, and the society is attempting to break a Guinness World Record for its 10th anniversary year. Best of luck to everyone taking part!

Project and Campaigns Fund – applications still open

Don’t forget that the deadlines for the SU Project Fund and Campaigns Fund are in Week 8 for anyone who’s considering submitting an application! Head to the Society Exec Resources page of the SU website for more info. Want to see your society event featured in a future issue? Email chris.carter@warwicksu.com with all the details!

HALL SOCIETY ELECTIONS If you’re living on campus, running your Hall Society is a fantastic way to meet new people, organise social events and create a sense of community. Why not become part of your Hall Society exec? It’s a great chance to do something fun outside your degree, looks fantastic on your CV and it’ll give you a chance to have a say in your SU right from the word ‘go’! We’re introducing a brand new scheme this year to help hall societies run better than ever – partnering hall society execs with some of the most experienced society execs across campus so that you’re getting the best possible advice. We’re running elections for the following posts in Week 5: President Treasurer Secretary Fundraising Officer Publicity Officer Social Secretary Voting opens at 9am on Monday 27th October (Week 5). Keep checking your emails and Facebook groups for more information coming soon!

community CANAL CLEAN UP

Our Love Community programme is a great way to give something back to the local area, helping to improve both the communities we live in and the perception of students among permanent residents. In Week 5, we’ll be helping to clean up the Grand Union Canal in Leamington Spa – if you’re interested in giving something back to your community by getting involved, meet at the Canal Bridge on Emscote Road (near Tesco) between 10am-1pm on Sunday 2nd November. Gloves and equipment will be provided, and everyone’s welcome to join us – the more, the merrier! Photo credit: Erin Davies
