Sabb Blab Ah yes, Week 7 of Term 1. I spent my first-ever Week 7 desperately trying to write an essay, but spent the majority of the time on Facebook attempting to de-tag every picture of the Freshers Party, Pop! and my first Skool Dayz. I trust your first six weeks were far less embarrassing than mine… That said, if you did have a lovely time, ahem, socialising, then remember that the GUM clinic is next Tuesday between 11.30 and 5pm! It’s a free, confidential and informal service, and it only takes 10 minutes - come along to make sure you’re having fun safely and responsibly!

Even if deadlines are looming (if you’re a finalist or a PG student, University can begin to feel like one long deadline), try to take some time out of your studies to get involved with all the things going on in the last half of term. RaG Week is pretty hard to avoid - be prepared for a packed week of unusual deliveries to lectures, dancing cuddly animals and general hilarity all in the name of charity! Week 8 is Pride Week, a celebration of the LGBTUA+ movement on campus, around the country and across the world. Events include the Trans* day of remembrance vigil on the Piazza on November 19th at 7pm, and - my personal favourite - ‘Love Music Hate Homophobia’ on Friday 22nd! So, whether you’re a fresher recovering from weeks of fun and frolics or in the process of completing your PhD, there really is something for everyone this fortnight. Have fun!

week 7 Prepare for campus to come alive with all manner of surreal antics in Week 7 as Rag Week returns! Brace yourself for the sight of 6ft furry animals wandering around campus delivering surprises to all and sundry – if you want to send something special to a friend, loved one or lecturer, make sure you sign up at the Rag stall in the SU during the week. Alternatively, you can arrange to have your nemesis ‘gnomed’, which involves them being cling-filmed to a tree and pelted with eggs, flour and water – perfect for that lazy flatmate who hasn’t been doing their share of the washing-up! Head to www.warwicksu.com/societies/rag/ for more updates nearer the time - all proceeds go to charity!

OFFICER UPDATES

The Sabbatical Officer team here at the Students’ Union are elected by the student body to represent YOU. Here’s what a few of them have been up to recently…

Ben Sundell – President I interviewed and appointed a new student trustee to the Students’ Union Board, as well as sending out a co-signed letter with students’ recommendations for how to improve departments – including getting microwaves and kettles (yay!) Outside of the office, I represented Warwick SU at the NUS HE Zone conference, as well as helping Cosmo and the Democracy team with Student Council and the ASM. I also led on our community relations programme, helping to oversee the launch of the Street Marshal scheme and the Your Town Your Choice events, in addition to representing students at the community forums in Leamington!

Zoë Buckland – Sports Officer I’ve been working hard to secure £12,000 worth of sponsorship to be invested into Sport this year, as well as collaborating with the new web and systems staff at Warwick Sport to get plans for the website and online booking systems moving. Elsewhere, I’ve been working closely with the Coventry Sports Officer to organise the dates and venues of all the Varsity fixtures and planning our marketing campaign to ensure that this year’s Varsity is the biggest spectacle yet! We’ve also been supporting the Warwick Sport programmes as much as we can, including the Intra-Mural Leagues (featuring paid officials this year to make them more efficient) and the Hall Sports programme, which is bringing people together to create a larger community spirit on campus. In addition, Warwick Active events such as the Zombie Run have been a huge success with over 240 participants!

Cosmo March – Democracy & Development Officer I pushed our IT Team to get the new online book sale system finally up and running on the SU website (sincere apologies once again for the delay on this!), as well as introducing Officer Blogs and Sabbatical Officer Objectives to warwicksu.com so you can keep track of what your elected officials have been up to. Democracy-wise, we achieved the highest-ever turnout in this year’s Autumn Elections – thanks to everyone who stood as a candidate or voted! I also organised the first All Student Meeting of the year (taking place this week if you’re reading this in Week 7!) In extra-curricular activities, I abducted a circus llama and brought it on the U1. Alright, I didn’t do that, but I really wish I had.

Upcoming Warwick Sport Events PwC Breakfast Club – Monday Week 8

Discover Disabled Sport Festival - Week 8

This fortnightly event takes place between 9-10am on Mondays of even weeks. Sports Clubs can send in their application in for free breakfast - be it after a hard morning of training, to celebrate a match last week or simply to get your club together, it’s a great start to the week! For more info and to apply, visit www.warwicksu.com/sports/breakfastclub

On Saturday and Sunday of Week 8 (23rd-24th November), learn more about how to make sport accessible to disabled students. Come along and watch an Exhibition Match and help us forge links with the disabled sport offerings in the area, with the aim of creating a sustainable provision of sport for disabled students here at Warwick!

Recent Sportspeople of the Week! Congratulations are also due to Rhys Hill from Warwick Men’s Lacrosse for his incredible performance against Leicester University on 16th October 2013, together with Yanjun Deng from Warwick Judo for his outstanding defeat of a GB Squad fighter in the final of the Southend International Judo Championships to take Gold!
