YOUR VOICE We are the independent voice of students at Warwick University – although the SU receives an annual grant from the University and works closely with it, we are not a part of its formal structure, and are thus able to represent your views at a local, regional and national level. Each year, the student body elects seven student officers, all of whom take a year out from their studies to preside over the Union as your representatives. UNION DEVELOPMENT

As a Students’ Union, our primary purpose is to represent, advise and support our members. However, as you would expect, the staffing, time and resources required to deliver this come at a cost. Although the SU receives an annual grant from the University and works closely with it, this funding on its own is insufficient to sustain the day-to-day running of the SU. Consequently, we run a variety of commercial services to bridge this gap and help support our noncommercial membership services.

WHERE YOUR MONEY GOES Warwick SU is a charity and a not-for-profit organisation. Unlike commercial high-street venues, we do not exist to make a profit - the money we bring in through our commercial outlets (bars, restaurants, cafés and nightclubs) is directly reinvested back into other services for Warwick students, including our Clubs & Societies, Advice & Welfare services, Campaigns, Democracy and more. As a registered charity, it directly benefits you to use our services - every time you buy an event ticket for The Copper Rooms, a baguette in The Bread Oven, a pint in The Dirty Duck, a meal in Xananas or a cup of coffee in Curiositea, that money goes right back into the pot to fund student activities. Put simply, without your support and loyalty, we wouldn’t exist! There are lots of problems that you could (but hopefully won’t!) face during your time at University. It could be your course, housing, study visas, financial issues, personal worries or anything inbetween. Luckily, the Student Advice Centre is here to help! Campus’s very own Citizens’ Advice Bureau, we run a free, confidential and informal service to support your life at University. We are based on the top floor of SUHQ and receive over 6000 enquiries a year. Our three fully-trained advisors can help with issues relating to housing, immigration, money, study, consumer rights and much more. They will do all they can to ensure you make an informed decision about any difficulties you might face – and, if we can’t help, we will direct you to someone who can.

It should be an exciting moment in your first year: the opportunity to move out of halls and in with your new friends. However, myths and misinformation surrounding off-campus accommodation mean that students often feel pressured into signing a contract. We are here to make sure you feel happy with your housing by running a campaign each year in Term 1 to let you know your options. Love Community addresses Warwick’s relationship with our local community. We want you to be safe, have a great time living off-campus and have a positive and happy experience in the local area. Love Community is about doing what we can to respect the area we are living in and the people around us. It also provides better opportunities to get involved in making it a better place. The campaign encompasses all of the information in our Off-Campus MovingIn Guide, the possibility of social action projects, and continues the Leave Leam Tidy/Keep Cov Clean initiatives. These aim to ensure that at the end of the academic year students leave their houses and flats in good condition, useful or reusable possessions get reused or recycled and we leave our local area in a decent state.

Hello! I’m Cat, and I’m your Welfare & Campaigns officer this year. I am responsible for looking after the Welfare Services in the Students’ Union and lobbying for the best possible care from the University. Student life is often lots of fun, but it isn’t always easy. I will be here to offer support if things don’t go to plan - I can assist you with problems with your accommodation, developing a positive relationship with your community and can also advise you on issues surrounding sexual and mental health, immigration and student safety. A really exciting part of my job is facilitating student activism. EDUCATION

One of the primary purposes of Warwick SU is to represent you. Whether it’s to your academic department, to the University, the local council or nationally, we’re a great place to get support and help. This is most obvious when it comes to academic issues such as appeals and complaints, but can also cover anything from housing issues to healthcare. Remember that our collective voice is much stronger than a lone one!

Hungry for Feedback............. .? The Student-Staff Liaison Committee (SSLC) system is paramount to academic representation here in the Union: these are committees made up of students and staff which discuss specific departmental issues, and are your first port-of-call in making your opinions known. If you fancy getting involved and becoming an SSLC Rep, you’ll get the chance at the start of Term 1 when the SU runs its Autumn Elections. Last year, the SU’s Hungry for Feedback campaign helped to bring about a 4-week turnaround on the feedback you receive on your academic work. This year, we want to use the campaign to ensure that the feedback you’re getting is of a high quality – keep a lookout for more on this later in the year. We also get a panel of senior University representatives to come along and be quizzed by students directly. There will be breakaway groups throughout, some providing the opportunity to debate the issues and others offering training courses. These are a great opportunity and more information will appear on the SU homepage nearer the time, so be sure to keep a keen eye on it!

Warwick SU loves to get involved in the wider community. One of the ways we do this is through our Inspire scheme, in which dozens of students head out to a number of schools in the local area and tell the pupils all about their University experiences. This is a great way to give something back while potentially inspiring a new generation of students who may not have previously considered going to University. The scheme runs all year long and we’re always looking for new volunteers - be on the lookout for information on how to apply, or drop the Education Officer an email via education@warwicksu.com.

With the recent increase in fees, University is getting very expensive and I know that you want value for money. For this to happen, you’ll need to get involved with your academic representation by letting them know what works and what needs improvement. Student-Staff Liaison Committees (SSLCs) offer you the chance to have your say on all aspects of your degree course, while the Education Convention will place you at the heart of the debate on education in Britain today. I’m also here to deal with any individual issues you may have, so don’t be afraid to come and talk to me. Every Students’ Union in the country is run directly by its members. Each year, the student body elects 7 students as their representatives who work full-time ensuring that the Students’ Union is run and directed by its members. But they aren’t the only students who have a say in how the SU is run – any student can be involved, and every student has an equal voice.

: How does it work? If every student acted independently, the system would be highly inefficient and there would be a lot of mixed messages. Therefore, different groups of students are able to elect their own representatives to sit on a decision-making body known as Student Council. If a student wants to enact change or raise an issue, they can do so through the support of their elected Councillors. There are two different types of change, which in turn can be brought about by two key decision-making bodies:

Once a term we hold an All Student Meeting. Any student can attend these meetings, raise issues and debate the Union’s priorities in the form of Union Policy. Students hold campus-wide campaigns in favour of, or against, a motion put to an All Student Meeting. After the meeting, any student can vote online and a decision is made. This is where Policy is set.

After decisions have been made, it’s up to Student Council to make sure things happen. Policies and Regulations & Principles mandate an Officer to do something or change the way the Union operates, and it’s Student Council’s job to ensure this occurs. They hold Officers to account. Unlike with Policy, Student Council can amend Regulations & Principles on your behalf.

We use Union Policy to lobby external organisations (the University, government, local businesses). Policy represents the ‘collective voice’ of the student body on big issues (like our stance on free education). Since these Union policies represent the student voice, they must be voted upon by students at an All Student Meeting to be passed.

Union Regulations & Principles are essentially the rules governing how the Union operates on a day-to-day basis (for example, what we sell, when we open, how we support students). Whereas Union Policy mandates the Union to campaign on an issue, Regulations & Principles are not able to do this and are purely operational.

The issue…

Imagine you are a second-year student. After a year at Warwick, you have noticed there aren’t enough water fountains across campus and you and your classmates often have no choice but to buy bottled water.

Speak to your Representatives… You get in touch with the Second-Year Councillors through the Students’ Union website. They agree and inform you that they will bring this up at Student Council.

Raised at Student Council… The Second-Year Councillors raise the issue at the next meeting. Other Councillors and Officers agree that there is a lack of fountains. The Welfare & Campaigns Officer agrees to speak to the University about this issue. This task is added to the Action List, meaning the Welfare & Campaigns Officer must report their progress back at the next meeting.

Officer meets with the University… Students’ Union Welfare and Campaigns Officer meets with the Director of Campus Services to discuss the issue. The Director informs the Officer that there simply isn’t enough money in the budget to install these additional fountains.

Creating Union Policy… At the next Student Council, the Welfare & Campaigns Officer explains that they were unsuccessful. Instead, the Officer brings a motion forward to make it Union Policy that students want more water fountains. Student Council agrees and the motion is sent to the next All Student Meeting.

Using our ‘collective voice’… Since a Policy represents the voice of all students, it must be voted upon by all students. Several days are given to debate, discuss and vote on the issue.The results are announced and the motion passes. The Students’ Union launches a small campaign on the website and social media explaining the need for more fountains on campus. The Welfare & Campaigns Officer goes back to the Director of Campus Services - together with the pressure of an online campaign and the fact that all students have voted on this issue, the University has no choice but to reallocate funds to provide more water for students.

This is an example of Democracy in action and how any student can use the system to bring about change!

NUS The NUS is an organisation made up of SUs from across the UK. Being part of the NUS provides Warwick with resources and support throughout the year, along with national campaigns for students on fees, funding, housing, social welfare and more. Furthermore, anyone can run to be an NUS delegate at one of their conferences.

Run to be an Officer Each year, students run to hold Officer positions in the Union. Any student can stand to be an Officer (if they are within the group they’d be representing) and any student can vote in the elections. Officers are all current or former students, and are here to represent you and your interests. Past Officers have done amazing things for students, so it’s really important that the right people are elected! Officer Elections are held in Term 2. As a Councillor, you represent a large cohort of students who rely on you. It is your responsibility to ensure their voice is heard, as well as holding Union Officers to account and ensuring they direct the Union appropriately. Elections for Student Council take place early in Term 1.

POSTGRADUATES

It can often be forgotten in amongst the rush of feverish Undergraduate activity that Postgraduate students make up nearly 50% of the student body here at Warwick. Upon enrolling, Postgraduates automatically become members of the Students’ Union, and we are here to represent your needs and interests just as passionately as we do any other group. Each year, students elect a Postgraduate Officer to the Sabbatical Team. Their role is to address concerns about all aspects of postgraduate life and study here at the University – if you have any comments or suggestions as to how we can improve the Warwick experience for you and your fellow Postgrads, feel free to get in touch!

The PGA is a representative body specifically for Postgrads that meets regularly to discuss concerns on issues such as postgraduate funding and support for Postgrads who teach. The PGA is a fully elected body, and can send representatives to Student Council to represent the opinions of the postgrad community. It will also provide support for any academic issues you may have and can lead on postgrad campaigns. The PGA meets regularly through the year – keep an eye on warwicksu.com/postgrad for details about our meetings and how to get involved!

POSTGRADUATE HUB The Postgraduate Hub, situated in Senate House next to the Arts Centre, is a study space designed especially for Postgraduates. As well as providing spaces for individual and collaborative study, the Hub also hosts regular events and social activities where you can meet fellow Postgrads. They also offer academic support services such as the Dissertation Station and funding mentoring scheme. You can keep up to date with what’s going on at the Hub via their website or by following their Twitter account. @WarwickPgHub

Democracy is at the heart of the Union and whether you want to make a difference to your Union, the University or at a national level, our representative structures are here to help you effect change. There are lots of ways in which the Union can help you to get your voice heard. Each Faculty has its own Postgraduate Representative who will sit on University committees and provide a student perspective on academic issues. We also have 6 Postgraduate Councillors who represent postgrad interests on Student Council, which debates a wide variety of issues relating to students. Each course also has an SSLC (StudentStaff Liaison Committee), which provides a forum for students, staff and senior academics to discuss concerns at specific course and University levels. These committees give you the chance to have a direct say in how your department is run. Elections are organised at a departmental level, so watch out for more information during your induction if you’d like to get involved! Undertaking postgraduate study can be a hectic experience, but taking a break from your work is important too. If you’re looking to meet other postgrads and get involved in Warwick’s vibrant student community but our traditional club nights in The Copper Rooms aren’t for you, then we’ve still got plenty to offer: Whether you fancy the Pub Quiz, performing at Un-Plucked, our weekly acoustic night in The Dirty Duck, or a laid-back evening at Saturday Session in The Terrace Bar, we host various events with a more relaxed vibe. Societies are a great way to meet new people and try new activities, and we’ve got over 240 for you to choose from. If you don’t have the time to commit to joining a society, be sure to keep an eye out for the wide range of events our societies run - from the annual Real Ale Festival to Warwick Student Arts Festival and the international feel of Go Global’s fortnightly events, there’s plenty to keep you busy outside of working hours. We also host regular REx Fest events in partnership with the Wolfson Research Exchange. An open-mic night run exclusively by and for Postgrads and held outside of Undergrad term times, REx Fest is a great chance to perform in front of a postgrad-only crowd and enjoy a relaxed night of music and socialising.

I’ll be meeting regularly with the University to improve the quality of both Taught and Research courses at Warwick, and will ensure that those of you who teach are fully supported by your departments. I’ll also be involved in running the Postgraduate Hub and Wolfson Research Exchange to make sure your study needs are met. Joining a society is a great way to try something completely new, make new friends or simply have a lot of fun. There are also opportunities to run societies, which will get you dealing with budgets, organising trips and picking up skills that you won’t get from just doing your degree.

HOW DO I JOIN? Join the Societies Federation via the Societies tab on the SU website. It’s only £14 for one year’s membership and, once paid, you can join any societies you like. This money goes straight back to societies in the budget, helping to fund all the wild and wonderful events that they put on, as well as funding SU services that societies need to support them. Societies usually charge around £3 for membership - an absolute bargain considering the amazing experiences you’ll have all year! Even better, many of our societies are free to join. SOCIETIES FAIR The Societies Fair happens during Week 1 at the start of the year, and is spread over two days. Each society will have a stall at the fair. You can chat to the people running the society and get a taste of what each of them involves. Make sure you join your Hall Society for free (e.g. Jack Martin Society if you are living in Jack Martin), as these are a great way to get to know people living in your halls who aren’t sharing your kitchen. Hall societies raise money for charity, run trips, organise socials and often enter our sports leagues. If you’re feeling really eager to get involved and fancy running your Hall Society this year, elections will be taking place towards the start of term. When you find societies you like, you can grab a barcode from them and buy your memberships there and then. Alternatively, you can join at any time online at www.warwicksu.com/societies.

SOCIETIES AWARDS Societies make such a valuable contribution to student life that we hold an awards ceremony in Term 3 to honour their achievements. We also single out several individuals for special recognition and pay tribute to their outstanding input into society activities. Running a society can be a tough job, so a huge part of my time will be given to supporting the amazing students who run the activities that’ll be so meaningful to your University experience. Alongside that I’ll also be working hard to campaign on changes within the SU, University and wider community to ensure that the extra-curricular interests of students are well-represented. The University of Warwick offers a huge variety of sporting opportunities - with exceptional facilities all over campus, there’s sure to be something that takes your fancy! With such a range of choice, Warwick enables both experienced athletes to compete at International level and complete beginners to learn from scratch. WHAT IS WARWICK SPORT? WARWICK ACTIVE Warwick Sport is a partnership between the Students’ Union and the University which oversees all sport on campus. The key idea behind the collaboration is to increase opportunities for every University member to engage in sport at whatever level suits them. A small membership fee of only £55 to join Warwick Sport for the entire year gives you unlimited access to a vast range of sports facilities. This includes halls, courts, tracks and the swimming pool, plus sports insurance, subsidised coaching, umpiring, first aid courses and even a free sports physiotherapy consultation, as well as the ability to join as many of our 72 sports clubs as you wish for only £6 each!

There are also many events throughout the year to get involved in such as the Zombie Run, UV Sports and various tournaments. These are predominantly run by our Activators, who are constantly leading and shaping our Warwick Active Programme. Like most UK Universities, Wednesday afternoon is set aside for sport at Warwick. Almost every single course keeps this time free from academic activity so that you are able to go and represent Warwick across the country at any sport imaginable! Warwick has a strong reputation across all the BUCS (British Universities & College Sports) leagues, and it’s only getting stronger.

Focus Teams are selected by Warwick Sport to receive extra assistance as a result of excellent performances in recent years. 11 teams were selected for the 2013 -14 Focus Team Programme, where they’ll benefit from a mentoring scheme, fitness classes, top coaches, strength and conditioning training sessions with the fitness suite staff and nutrition and psychology sessions with experts.

Don’t worry if you haven’t reached national standards yet and just want a run-about! Every club offers beginners’ courses and are open to all abilities, while our active programme always has something to offer!

Warwick Active is a brand new programme available to all Warwick Sport members. It offers a broad range of opportunities, from Hall Sports (where you can represent your hall in various sports each week) to intramural leagues and even short coaching courses in golf, self-defence and many more. Warwick Active provides a great way to socialise, boost confidence and meet new people, as well as get fit and active!

These 11 teams are: Women’s Netball, Men’s Cricket, Women’s Football, Men’s Rugby Union, Men’s Squash, Swimming, Women’s Tennis, Men’s Tennis, Judo, Men’s Volleyball and Women’s Lacrosse.

Billed as one of the most bizarre weeks in the campus calendar, RAG Week descends in Term 1. Various items can be delivered to lectures (including chocolates, pints or even a single red rose), giant animals appear round campus and a whole plethora of events grace the evenings at the Union. There’s even time for some mischief. ‘Gnomings’ (involving a target being cling-filmed to a tree and covered in flour, water and baked beans) offer some cheeky opportunities for revenge - perfect for that flatmate who hasn’t been doing their share of the washing-up. The annual flagship event of the Economics Society at Warwick, the summit is held over a weekend in February. Entirely student-run, it doesn’t just cover economics: sessions also touch on many other relevant topics in the sphere of social studies such as development, politics, globalisation & international relations.

The Real Ale Society hosts the biggest and best student beer festival in the country. With over 120 beers plus ciders, fruit wines and meads to try, there is guaranteed to be a drink that will suit everyone’s palate!

Every year in Term 2 we take on our archrivals, Coventry University, to see who can claim the title of the greatest sporting institution this side of the A46. Spanning the entire spectrum of sporting activities with over 40 fixtures, our teams compete for Varsity points. Thus far, Warwick remains the undefeated Varsity Champion for 23 years and this is the one event of the year that gets the whole of campus involved to support TEAM WARWICK, so it’s definitely not something to miss!

The Real Ale Festival is all about introducing people to beer in its cask-conditioned form. Many people have never tasted a good pint of bitter before, and still more are unaware of the huge variety that is available under the ‘ale’ heading.

At the end of the summer term is the annual sporting social highlight, the Sports Ball. At the end of each year, we also honour the incredible work of our student societies at a glittering awards ceremony in the Arts Centre. Make sure you come along and celebrate with us at an amazing evening of dining, dancing and spectacular society performances!

It is an event not to be missed and tickets are much sought-after, often selling out in less than a day! Giving clubs and individuals the chance to celebrate their achievements over the year, the Sports Ball is the perfect way to end the sporting season.

Monash – Warwick Alliance In 2011 Warwick signed an agreement with Monash University in Melbourne, Australia to create a strategic alliance which establishes both institutions as globally connected Universities.

We have a whole host of different roles available, from Bar Staff and Technical Services crew to our student Street Team.
