Reimagining Public Library as an Interactive knowledge and culture exchange hub

Type: Academic thesis

Site: Medical Road, Rajshashi

Year: 2022

Typology: Educational

This thesis proposes a new typology for a public space by reimagining the public library as an interactive knowledge and culture exchange hub. The library is transformed from being just a source of information to a place for people to connect , exchange knowledge, and engage in cultural activities.

The project operates on three levels. First , it sug gests creating flexible spaces that promote interaction and discussions among users, rather than just storing books. Second, it proposes combining library space with other components such as co-working spaces, galleries, and performance areas to create a cultural center that is active and relevant to the community. Finally, the design aims to create an open and inclusive public space that blurs the boundaries between different types of public institutions.

The project explores the role of architecture in revitalizing public spaces and institutions. By reimagining the public library as an interactive knowledge and culture exchange hub, this thesis provides a model for creating dynamic public spaces that meet the needs of diverse communities

The qu alit ati v e assessments

One of the spaces in the re-imagined library module is a six-heighted reading area for children, with stacking areas on the second, third, fourth, and fifth floors. The stacking areas are typically monotonous and uninspiring spaces, but in this library, a bridge connecting the floors provides an exciting view of the children reading. This bridge serves as a circulation element and provides a visual connection to the reading area below, while also breaking up the monotony of the stacking areas Another space in the library is the vast six-heighted grand space, which serves as a nod to the old grand library experiences. This space features a dramatic dou- ble-height entrance with ample natural light and a large open space for reading, socializing, and events The

The Sylhet Cultural Complex is a visionary architectural endeavor that revolves around the concept of three metaphorical "dots," each symbolizing a distinct aspect of communal gathering spaces.

The first dot embodies expansive open areas reminiscent of village squares, inviting locals and visitors alike to gather, socialize, and partake in leisure activities. Serving as a vibrant hub for community interaction and cultural exchange, this space fosters a sense of belonging and togetherness among diverse populations.

The second dot is a semi-private plaza, evoking the bustling markets found at the heart of Sylhet's villages. Here, commerce and social life intertwine, as individuals engage in trade, conversation, and shared experiences. Balancing intimacy with openness, this semi-private space encourages spontaneous encounters and collaborative endeavors, enriching the fabric of community life.

The third dot emerges as an open amphitheater, providing a formal yet inclusive venue for cultural events, performances, and ceremonies Nestled within the complex, this amphitheater serves as a focal point for artistic expression and celebration, honoring Sylhet's rich heritage and traditions while embracing the spirit of innovation and creativity.

Establishing women empowerment through an integrated approach

Type: Competition Project

Site: Sedhiou region, Senegal

Year: 2021

Women empowerment is a key ingredient to outlive impoverished rural households, it is also exigent for design framework will help out developing countries especially their rural areas to annihilate issues that undermine women’s ability to engage in economic activities. In our integrated design approach, we have unfolded reasons behind the lack of women ’ s participation in economic, for instance; unsung household activities, weak job market , lack of education, limited technology and skill, lack of business network, and most importantly societal prejudices. So, we tried to come up with a solution where one woman will stand for the other to uphold their social, economic and political status to establish women empowerment in society.

In response to the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic in public spaces, a modular design solution is proposed for a busy street corner, once vibrant but now dormant. The design focuses on minimizing mass contamination by dividing the area into distinct zones for circulation, seating, and vendor activities. A modular structure, comprising floating chambers and supporting elements, provides defined spaces, accommodating only a limited number of individuals at a time. The simplicity of the design, utilizing cost-effective materials such as PVC pipes and transparent coverings, allows for easy construction and adaptability in various public settings. The proposal aims to reactivate public life, uniting people while adhering to necessary social distancing measures. "DIVIDED WE STAND, we must."

In response to COVID-19 challenges, our design prioritizes reviving public spaces by minimizing contamination. Through zoning, we allocate separate areas for walking, sitting, and vendors, ensuring controlled occupancy The modular structure delineates spaces, establishing clear boundaries between circulation and functional zones, facilitating the safe resumption of public activities.
