Cumulative Grant-Making Approaches $17 Million
Focused on the Future:
Washington County Community Foundation
Transforming Small Libraries into Modern Community Centers In 2019, 11 local libraries received grants totaling $170,000 through a special capacity-building grant cycle of the WCCF’s Community CARE Fund. The initiative, designed to support small, independent, community based-libraries in Washington County, has improved services for those of all ages and backgrounds. Grants were used to purchase technology, create career centers, and make vital structural repairs. A listing of individual library grants can be found on Page 4. WCCF representative Alex Paris (far right) presented a $15,000 grant to Avella Public Library for youth and STEM areas. (From left to right) Karen Birdsal, Rosemarry Jennings, Library Director Melissa Ansell, and John Coulter.
In Their Own Words: The Impact of Grants “This grant has opened our door to all ages of patrons that we were not able to reach before due to lack of resources offered. It has allowed the library to expand our services in [an area] where these things were once unattainable.” Melissa Ansell, Director Avella Public Library

“With the grant we received, we were able to purchase three new laptops for students to use for schoolwork or to play games that help them improve their math skills. We also have after-school days where children come in and tinker with the microscope, STEM kits, and even an old-school Spirograph, which we used to create Valentine cards to send to the troops. I like to say we may be a small library, but we have a big heart.” Pam Clutter, Library Director Marianna Community Public Library ON THE COVER: When the WCCF rehabilitated the historic Samuel T. Brownlee House, it saw a window of opportunity, donating 16 six-panel, 170-year-old windows to Bentworth Middle School art students. After student teams transformed them into works of art, depicting life in the 1800s, they had the opportunity to take a tour of the Brownlee House led by historian and WCCF Trustee William "Tripp" Kline. (Above) One of the finished pieces created with oil paints. Art Teacher Jessica Burkley plans to reuse the windows so that future classes of artists will also have the opportunity to peer into the past.

“The addition of our Smart Board has been a wonderful addition to our current storytime and children’s STEM programs, and has also been integral for multigenerational and adult programs. Speakers can upload presentations directly to the board and bring the library educational and enriching discussions. We have been truly grateful to be able to provide these much needed updates to our community and are excited to be able to further provide the up-to-date space, collection, resources, services, and programs our community needs to thrive.” Laura E. Swanson, Library Manager Chartiers-Houston Community Library

Giving to the WCCF For the first time, the Foundation allowed donors to make operational gifts to the WCCF through WCCF Gives in 2019. However, in the spirit of this day of giving, donations designated for the Foundation are not eligible for the bonus pool. The Foundation remains committed to offering WCCF Gives at no cost to charitable organizations, despite the significant cost of hosting this event. In seven years, the WCCF has never charged a fee to local charities for this valuable service.

Exclusive Sponsor of the Community Impact
Please Give: Help is Needed “Close to Home” A MESSAGE FROM BETSIE TREW, WCCF PRESIDENT & CEO, IN RESPONSE TO THE COVID-19 GLOBAL PANDEMIC This is a time for communities to come together. If you are able, please give of your treasures. Join other community members in making a financial gift to the Close to Home Disaster and Emergency Fund. With the early support of some of the Foundation’s major donors, the Close to Home Disaster and Emergency Fund was able to issue emergency grants of more than $330,000. This included grants to each of our three local hospitals to purchase ventilators, respirators, personal protective equipment, and other items needed for direct patient care and to protect health care workers. Several grants have been issued to provide emergency food assistance, cleaning supplies, and baby formula to struggling families. Challenge grants have been issued to Domestic Violence Services of Southwestern PA, the Greater Washington County Food Bank, Leadership Washington County, and the Salvation Army Washington Corps to serve as incentives for others to give financially to these organizations that are meeting critical needs during the crisis. If you are able, please give of your time. Volunteer to help prepare and deliver food, to make calls to vulnerable community members, or to sort donations of cleaning supplies and other materials. Several of our human service charities have experienced a reduction in volunteerism as many of their previous volunteers are elderly and are no longer able to volunteer. If you are able, please give of your talents. My hat is off to our friends at local distilleries who have repurposed their stills to make hand sanitizer for local health care professionals and first responders. Several local sewing and quilting circles are sewing masks to donate where needed, and area musicians are hosting virtual concerts through social media to provide some joy during this time of crisis. What is your talent, and how can you help? In this unsettling time, consider some words of comfort provided to Fred Rogers by his mother during times of crisis. She said, “Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.” However you are able, please be a helper. Please Give Close to Home.
Yes, I Want to Give “Close to Home!” HELP OUR COMMUNITY IN THIS TIME OF NEED The ripple effects of the COVID-19 pandemic will continue to impact our community well into the foreseeable future. And sadly, it is anticipated that critical and changing needs related to issues like health care, hunger, and domestic violence
will persist as this situation evolves. However, you can play a role in helping the Washington County community to persevere through this crisis with your gift to the Community Foundation’s Close to Home Disaster & Emergency Fund. Gifts of any amount are welcome. To support the fund, please return the completed form below with your gift. If you have questions, or if you would like to discuss giving options, please contact the WCCF at 724-222-6330 or info@wccf.net.
