JUNETEENTH CELEBRATION
June 14, 2025 | Jerry Willey Plaza
Juneteenth, also known as Juneteenth National Independence Day, commemorates the emancipation of four million enslaved African Americans. This historic day originated on June 19, 1865, in Galveston, Texas, when Union soldiers arrived with the news of freedom. The first official celebration took place the following year, and today, Juneteenth is marked by gatherings featuring prayer, music, food, and cultural festivities.
In Oregon, Black pioneers celebrated Grand Emancipation Day as early as 1863, and in 1945, Clara People introduced Juneteenth celebrations to the state. Building on this rich history, the Black Advisory Business Council will host Juneteenth 2025 on Saturday, June 14 from 12:00 - 6:30 PM at Jerry Willey Plaza, Hillsboro.
