May’s first film is a hilarious fantasy about an aging and pampered Manhattan aristocrat who discovers he has burned through his inheritance. The supercilious misanthrope, played with a mannered grace by Walter Matthau, fixes on the unlikely scheme of finding a wealthy bride (May) before he is evicted from his luxurious apartments.

Mel Brooks’ monstrously crazy tribute to Mary Shelley’s classic pokes hilarious fun at every Frankenstein movie ever made. Summoned to his late grandfather’s castle in Transylvania, young Dr. Frankenstein (Gene Wilder) soon discovers the scientist’s step-by-step manual explaining how to bring a corpse to life.

TO LIFE

FAMOUS NATHAN

TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 1, 7:30 PM

TUESDAY, JUNE 9, 7:30 PM

Dir. Uwe Janson (86min, Germany, 2014) German with English Subtitles

Dir. Lloyd Handwerker (97min, USA, 2014) Documentary

Fate has taken its toll on the aging cabaret singer Ruth and the young but terminally-ill Jonas. Jonas arrives in Berlin just in time to save Ruth’s life. Evicted from her apartment, the sarcastic but warm-hearted Ruth – an aging Jewish cabaret singer – saw no other way out than suicide. Jonas, meanwhile, is driven by a secret and fleeing from his love and his future.

A Coney Island-inspired, emotionally rich portrait of the original Nathan’s Famous, the iconic eatery created in 1916 by filmmaker Lloyd Handwerker’s grandparents, Nathan and Ida Handwerker. The visually dynamic documentary weaves together decades of archival footage, family photos and home movies, an eclectic soundtrack and neverbefore-heard audio from Nathan himself.
