CECILE ESTHER KUZNITZ YIVO AND THE MAKING OF MODERN JEWISH CULTURE: SCHOLARSHIP FOR THE YIDDISH NATION The Bernard Wexler Lecture on Jewish History FREE Founded by a group of Eastern European intellectuals after World War I, YIVO, the Yiddish Scientific Institute in Vilna, Lithuania, embodied the apex of secular Yiddish culture. Using newly-recovered documents that were believed destroyed by Hitler’s and Stalin’s forces, historian Cecile Kuznitz tells the compelling story of how these scholars built a world-renowned institution despite dire poverty and anti-Semitism in this first book on YIVO’s history. The Bernard Wexler Fund for Jewish History, established in 1996, supports an annual lecture that brings outstanding speakers, scholarly research and contemporary issues to the forefront of learning at the DCJCC.

TO LIFE Fate has taken its toll on the aging cabaret singer Ruth and the young but terminally ill Jonas. Yet despite their great age difference and their entirely opposite experiences in life, they form an intense bond and give each other a reason and purpose to live.

TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 8, 7:30 PM

FAMOUS NATHAN

Featuring Big City // Hot Dog Happy Hour presented by EntryPointDC Thirty years in the making, Famous Nathan chronicles the personal and public history of Nathan’s Famous of Coney Island, the iconic hot dog eatery founded in 1916 by director Lloyd Handwerker’s grandfather, Nathan Handwerker. Screening preceded by a happy hour, hot dog eating contest and much more (see p. 12 for details).

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 10, 7:30 PM

LABYRINTH OF LIES (SNEAK PREVIEW) Frankfurt, 1958: a young prosecutor comes across documents that help put on trial members of the SS who served in Auschwitz. Stonewalled by authorities at every turn, he struggles with the national temptation to quietly forget rather than investigate Nazi crimes. It is nearly impossible for him to find his way through this maze: everybody seems to have been either guilty or involved.

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 13, 7:30 PM

THE ART DEALER The latest drama from renowned French director François Margolin (The Flight of the Red Balloon) follows a Jewish woman who embarks on a journey to recover family paintings stolen by the Nazis. During her investigation, she discovers that some family secrets are best kept hidden.

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 24, 7:30 PM

I AM BIALIK The story of Aviv Talmor, a frustrated poet and literature teacher is true…mostly. When Aviv’s father (whom he never knew) dies, Aviv begins to research the man’s past, discovering evidence that his grandfather was the illegitimate son of Israeli painter Ira Yan and national poet Haim Nahman Bialik. Israel’s literary community is shocked by the claims, which threaten to impact the Bialik’s reputation. Part of the Hyman S. & Freda Bernstein Jewish Literary Festival.

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 29, 7:00 PM

ROCK IN THE RED ZONE [MUSIC + FILM EVENT] On the edge of Israel’s Negev Desert, half a mile from Gaza and directly in the path of thousands of Hamas rockets, lies Sderot, a city of factory workers and rock musicians built by the children of refugees from North Africa and the Middle East. Despite being pummeled for years by missiles, the people of Sderot persevere. In raucous Moroccan celebrations, they embrace newcomers; in quiet family dinners, they voice their dreams. And in underground bomb shelters, they create music. Screening followed by Q&A with the director and a live performance by Sderot musician Avi Vaknin.

IMBER’S LEFT HAND A fascinating chronicle of the life and career of renowned painter Jon Imber. His steadfast artistic resolve after being diagnosed with ALS leads to the creation of more than 100 portraits in an incredible four month span. The film sensitively observes Jon, capturing him at his most courageous and humorous as the disease claims his body. Screening followed by Q&A with the director.

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 10, 7:30 PM

DOUGH Down on his luck, an old Jewish baker is desperate to save his bakery in London’s East End when he reluctantly enlists the help of a teenage Muslim apprentice— a refugee from Darfur. Jonathan Pryce stars in this British dramedy about an unlikely friendship and a struggle to make ends meet.

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 24, 7:30PM

TANGO GLORIES A vivacious mix of music, magical realism and electrifying dance mesmerize in this tale centered on octogenarian Fermin Tundera. Committed to an institution decades ago, and suffering from PTSD and depression, Fermin breaks out of his isolation with the help of an ambitious young doctor, who connects to Fermin through the language of the Argentinian tango. As their relationship deepens, we’re transported back to 1940’s Buenos Aires, where long-kept secrets unwind to the sensual beats of a deep and beautiful dance.
