2021 VIRTUAL

SPRING GALA Thursday, May 13, 2021

Dear Friends, We come together tonight so filled with gratitude. We are grateful for each and every one of you. Without your friendship, your support, and your unwavering belief in the power of this community, the story of the Edlavitch DCJCC (EDCJCC) in this year of Covid could have been written quite differently. This has been an unprecedented year, and yet we are thriving. You have entrusted us with your children in a year when that felt like an enormous leap of faith. You have shown up in our Zoom classrooms to study Hebrew, engage with the arts, and exercise from the safety of your own home. You have picked up Bim Bom Bags and lit Chanukah candles in our parking lot. You have donated blood and dedicated countless volunteer hours to support our incredible array of community partners working in the spaces of hunger, homelessness, and poverty. You have stayed by our side through this past year in ways that we never could have imagined. Because of that, our hearts are full tonight. We are grateful to our Board. In this unprecedented year, our Board members have reminded us what it means to have a foundation of strong and dedicated lay leadership. Whether working diligently in committees on a range of topics, acting as

enthusiastic ambassadors and supporters to the community, or providing generous financial support, our Board members’ outstanding response to the Covid emergency has allowed us to celebrate with you tonight. We are grateful to our staff. The EDCJCC has a talented team of true magic-makers, and we are forever indebted to them. There is the magic that you can see every day in the eyes of our teachers, in the creative genius of our artists, and in those who expand the boundaries of Jewish life to include people who might otherwise have been left aside. There are also the magic-makers you may not see, but who are hard at work every day keeping our classrooms clean, navigating the complexities of payroll, and keeping our building maintained and safe. We are grateful for the power of this Jewish community. In the early months of Covid, community leaders jumped into action and led a successful relief campaign to raise critical funds in support of many organizations that were suffering financially as their operations were shut down. Throughout this year, The Jewish Federation of Greater Washington convened colleagues and community conversations that led to remarkable collaboration. In December, the Pozez JCC of Northern Virginia and the Bender JCC of Greater Washington

joined the EDCJCC to co-present the virtual JxJ Festival, reaching an audience of over 10,000 people. This summer, EDCJCC campers will join their Maryland counterparts for a joyful summer camp experience on the Bender JCC campus. And in one of our most proud moments, we built a powerful partnership with Hillel at the George Washington University to leverage the time and tenacity of college students and alumni volunteers to support literally hundreds of older adults seeking assistance in the vaccine enrollment process. This partnership truly felt like a life saver! Gam zeh ya’avor. Yes, even with respect to Covid, “this too shall pass.” But when it does, what we will take with us? We will remember that we are not meant to be alone. We will remember that we are agile and adaptive and that we can evolve as the needs of our community evolve. We will remember that we are so much more than just a building at 16th and Q. Over the past year, we have reached close to 50,000 people in DC, Maryland, and Virginia—and because Zoom seems to have no bounds,

we have also reached audiences in 23 states, Europe, South America, and beyond. We will remember all those who have suffered and still suffer. We will keep our eyes open to racial injustice and our heads high amidst antisemitic uncertainties. We will continue to lend our hands to build a more just society and we will not look away from injustice simply because others may have moved on. We will persist. Finally, we will remember the power of this community in the worst of times, and we will continue to lean on that power as we move forward into better times. When you walk through our doors again, we will welcome you back as friends, neighbors, and family. As before, we will ask you what you need and how we can continue to add value to your lives. After all, we are here for you. With gratitude, & Dava Schub Chief Executive Officer

Saul Pilchen Board President

Greetings

Edlavitch DC Jewish Community Center 2021 Virtual Spring Gala May 13, 2021

As Mayor of Washington, DC, it is my pleasure to extend greetings to participants and attendees of the Edlavitch DC Jewish Community Center’s 2021 Virtual Spring Gala. With beginnings in our nation’s capital dating back more than a century to 1911, the Edlavitch DC Jewish Community Center (EDCJCC) espouses the following values: Jewish; Community; Teamwork; Diversity; Personal Development; Responsibility; Excellence; and Hospitality. Guided by these values, EDCJCC embraces people of all backgrounds through cultural, recreational, educational, and social justice engagement. I could not be more pleased to congratulate tonight’s honorees: the lawyers of Arnold and Porter, who are receiving the Lee G. Rubenstein Outstanding Leadership Award, and the EDCJCC preschool’s teachers for their bravery during a challenging year. Both groups of honorees are to be commended for their good work during the COVID-19 pandemic Arnold and Porter’s pro-bono team of lawyers helped EDCJCC understand the complex and ever-changing federal laws related to pandemic assistance and how to properly apply for the PPP program. And, the EDCJCC preschool opened during the pandemic under the guidance of the Office of the State Superintendent of Education to allow our young learners’ parents to continue their work, oftentimes on the frontline, knowing their children were safe and being educated. On behalf of the residents of Washington, DC, thank you for all that you do—I wish you a most enjoyable and successful event! Muriel Bowser Mayor, Washington, DC
