NOW PAVILION THE WASHINGTON PAVILION OF ARTS AND SCIENCE

BY MICHELE WELLMAN

All good things must come to an end. We’re feeling that way at the Washington Pavilion. The signs of summer approaching are everywhere. From the 6,000 plus students, teachers and chaperones taking to the Kirby Science Discovery Center and Visual Arts Center for end of the school year fieldtrips to the capstone of our 201314 Pavilion Performance Series, Jersey Boys, we feel closure coming to this monumental year.

Jersey Boys is more than just the end of our Broadway season, it’s a reminder that the Washington Pavilion has the capacity to go big, and that each and every one of you are with us for the ride. The only show in our season to host more than two performances, the cast and crew of Jersey Boys will take the stage a whopping seven times over five days. Only a few tours have done such long streaks in the history of the Washington Pavilion, like Irving Berlin’s White Christmas and Little House on the Prairie, to name a few. While we close 2013-14, we can’t help but look forward at what’s to come. Our summer will be filled with over 1,000 youth taking to the classrooms for our annual summer camp offerings, tourists from all over the country taking in our facilities and museums, and a summer wedding season full of “I do’s”. The stage of the Mary W. Sommervold Hall may be quiet—but we promise we are gearing up for an epic 2014-15 season. This year we are offering a season of straight-up Broadway! Big musical numbers like Nice Work If You Can Get It and Anything Goes will bring the true spirit of New York Theaters! Splash in some fun, quirky pop culture with Buddy in ELF: The Broadway Musical and Peter Pan in Peter And The Starcatcher. We’re sure to feel some diva sass with Sister Act and revel in nostalgia with Million Dollar Quartet. Subscriptions to the 2014-15 series are now available and the numbers are setting the stage to break records! In just a few weeks we’ll begin the Choose Your Own 4 performance package, and single tickets will go on sale later in the summer. Don’t wait to lock-in your tickets to see Exclusive Extras like David Tutera’s Dream Bigger (and the whole day of festive events at the Pavilion in conjunction to his performance!), Keigwin + Company, and Arlo Guthrie presenting the 50th Anniversary of Alice’s Restaurant. As always, the Washington Pavilion is proud to be Yours. Mine. & Ours. We look forward to seeing you!

SINGLE TICKETS ON SALE NOW! NICE WORK IF YOU CAN GET IT October 7 & 8, 2014 Get ready for this 1920s-era feel-good musical, complete with extravagant dance numbers, glittering costumes and an unlikely love story between a wealthy playboy and a rough and tumble lady bootlegger. This lighthearted crowd pleaser is set against the backdrop of classic Gershwin hits like “Let’s Call the Whole Thing Off,” “Someone to Watch Over Me” and “Fascinating Rhythm.” NICE WORK IF YOU CAN GET IT is a sparkling, madcap tale that combines laughter, romance and high-stepping Broadway magic for an evening bursting with girls, glamour and the glorious songs of Gershwin!

SISTER ACT

ELF: THE BROADWAY MUSICAL

November 12 & 13, 2014 ELF is the hilarious tale of Buddy, a young orphan child who mistakenly crawls into Santa’s bag of gifts and is transported back to the North Pole. Unaware that he is actually human, Buddy’s enormous size and poor toymaking abilities cause him to face the truth. With Santa’s permission, Buddy embarks on a journey to New York City to find his birth father, discover his true identity, and help New York remember the true meaning of Christmas. This modern day Christmas classic is sure to make everyone embrace their inner ELF.

February 24 & 25, 2015

PETER AND THE STARCATCHER

SISTER ACT is Broadway’s feel-amazing musical comedy smash! The New York Post calls it “RIDICULOUSLY FUN,” and audiences are jumping to their feet in total agreement! Featuring original music by 8-time Oscar® winner ALAN MENKEN (Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid, Little Shop of Horrors), SISTER ACT tells the story of Deloris Van Cartier, a wannabe diva whose life takes a surprising turn when she witnesses a crime and the cops hide her in the last place anyone would think to look—a convent! Under the suspicious watch of Mother Superior, Deloris helps her fellow sisters find their voices as she unexpectedly rediscovers her own. A sparkling tribute to the universal power of friendship, SISTER ACT is reason to REJOICE!

PETER AND THE STARCATCHER is the most magical evening of madcap fun. This comedy takes a hilarious romp through the Neverland you never knew. The winner of 5 Tony Awards®, this swashbuckling prequel to Peter Pan will have you hooked from the moment you let your imagination take flight. A company of a dozen actors play more than a hundred unforgettable characters, all on a journey to answer the century-old question: How did Peter Pan become The Boy Who Never Grew Up? This epic original story of popular culture’s most enduring and beloved character proves that your imagination is the most captivating place in the world.

March 24 & 25, 2015

SINGLE TICKETS ON SALE NOW! ANYTHING GOES January 15 & 16, 2015

ALL ABOARD for this saucy and splendid production of ANYTHING GOES, winner of three 2011 Tony® Awards including Best Musical Revival and Choreography! When the S.S. American heads out to sea, etiquette and convention get tossed out the portholes as two unlikely pairs set off on the course to true love… proving that sometimes destiny needs a little help from a crew of singing sailors, an exotic disguise and some good old-fashioned blackmail. Peppering this Cole Porter first-class comedy are some of musical theater’s most memorable standards, including “I Get a Kick out of You,” “You’re the Top,” and of course, “Anything Goes.” Don’t miss what the AP exclaims as, “So DELIGHTFUL, So DELICIOUS, So DE-LOVELY!”

MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET April 8 & 9, 2015

MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET is the Tony Award-wining Broadway musical, inspired by the electrifying true story of the famed recording session that brought together rock ‘n’ roll icons Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins for the first and only time. On December 4, 1956, these four young musicians were gathered together by Sam Phillips, the “Father of Rock ’n’ Roll” at Sun Records in Memphis for what would be one of the greatest jam sessions of all time. Don’t miss your chance to be a fly on the wall of fame... at MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET!

EXCLUSIVE EXTRAS DAVID TUTERA: DREAM BIGGER November 16, 2014

Dream Bigger is an inspirational presentation that will allow you to experience life in a way you never thought possible. Tutera’s appearance will be geared towards everyone – fans of David, future brides and anyone who wants to live their life in style. There will be competitions, giveaways, and Q&A. He will discuss what goes into throwing a fabulous event and how YOU too can make dreams come true if you only Dream Bigger.

KEIGWIN + COMPANY January 30, 2015 Keigwin + Company creates and presents Artistic Director Larry Keigwin’s electrifying brand of contemporary dance, which embodies a theatrical sensibility that fuses art with entertainment, and puts theatrics front and center. The New York Times calls this provocative and engaging company ‘witty, kinetic and musically responsive’ and ‘a parcel of pure explosive energy, mediated by impressive technical skills.’ And DANCE Magazine extols, ‘The kinetic delight of Keigwin’s high-powered dancing is infectious, and he doesn’t shy away from the ‘e’ word: entertainment.’

ARLO GUTHRIE ALICE’S RESTAURANT: 50TH ANNIVERSARY

April 27, 2015

This legendary folk singer-songwriter returns to the Mary W Sommervold Hall to commemorate the 50th anniversary of his iconic song, “Alice’s Restaurant.” When a young Arlo, son of renowned folk legend Woody Guthrie, was arrested for littering on Thanksgiving Day back in 1965, he couldn’t know that it would launch his career, turning him into a counterculture hero. It ultimately helped spark an entire generation to embrace social activism. Guthrie charmed audiences with his witty stories, amusing anecdotes, and folk favorites at his last appearance here with the South Dakota Symphony, and this concert promises even more with a brand new program.
