ANNUAL

REPORT

AT WASHINGTON TRAILS ASSOCIATION, 2017 WAS A YEAR OF HELPING OUR COMMUNITY GROW AND DEEPENING OUR IMPACT From bringing on a new executive director to celebrating a decade of working with youth, this year was filled with exciting milestones for WTA and trails. We did not get here alone. It was you, our members and supporters, who showed us that when hikers help hikers we build more than trails — we create a community strong enough to shape the future of public lands and trails in Washington. Thank you for helping us build a better future for trails in 2017.

EMPOWERING HIKERS TO BE STEWARDS AND CHAMPIONS FOR TRAILS AND PUBLIC LANDS Every day, we work to engage our community as trail-maintenance volunteers, public-lands advocates and local experts sharing their knowledge with fellow hikers. In 2017, WTA volunteers worked yearround to build and maintain more than 250 trails — from urban adventures to remote wilderness. This sweat equity, and your support, helped WTA amplify the voice of the hiking community. Our on-the-ground impact made WTA a powerful influencer in policy decisions to keep the trails system you love accessible.

WTA’s executive director was invited to Washington, D.C., to testify before the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee about the power of volunteers and the need to invest in our public lands.

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT: MOHIT BHALLA Mohit moved to Seattle 3 years ago. He found WTA through a simple internet search. After he started hiking, he quickly realized that he wanted to give back to the trails he was falling in love with. Since 2015, he has volunteered 24 days, and even starred in our “What to Expect on a Trail Work Party” video this summer.

5,000 volunteers contributed 160,000Photo hours of trail work by Ben Corwin across the state in 2017. That’s like hiring a full-time workforce of 77 trail workers for an entire year.

“Hiking in the Northwest has changed my life. I keep coming back to volunteer because of the feeling that I have made a difference. The crew leaders and volunteers are all just really nice people. My only regret is that I can’t volunteer enough.” —MOHIT BHALLA, WTA VOLUNTEER

WTA rallied 44,000 activists to help shape recreation policy in Washington state, including engaging hikers in local planning processes and highlighting the need to invest in our public resources.

INSPIRING A NEW GENERATION OF HIKERS Thanks to the continuing support of our members and donors, in 2017 WTA celebrated 10 years since we established our youth program. We now have a comprehensive program that serves thousands of students. The youth program started with a smattering of one-day work parties for families. Today, however, 22 percent of our volunteers are under the age of 18. WTA is committed to inspiring the next generation of hikers, outdoor leaders and stewards. With your help, we are working on reducing the significant social, structural and institutional barriers that prevent communities from enjoying the outdoors and developing youth leaders that can help their peers experience the joys of hiking.

WTA’s Outdoor Leadership Training program empowers teachers and youth with training and resources to lead safe and fun outdoor adventures. In 2017, OLT supported more than 80 outings with over 2,000 participants — collectively spending more than 130 nights under the stars.

“That was a great experience because we now get to show other girls and Latina women that it is okay to show your interest in these things.” YOUTH SPOTLIGHT: LATINA YOUTH TRAIL CREW

—DANIELA CORTEZ, LATINA TRAIL CREW MEMBER

WTA partnered with Latino Outdoors to launch the first Latina trail crew at Mount Rainier. Nine young women (ranging in age from 13 to 16) embarked on an epic adventure in the park. Over the course of four days of trail work, the trailblazing crew learned about the park’s natural history and careers in the outdoors while exploring their own place in the world of public–land conservation.

In 2017 WTA’s Youth ambassadors attended Hiker Rally Day, organized work parties, created outdoor clubs and contributed to WTA’s hiking guide.

WTA helped 1,100 teens gain teamwork and outdoors skills through trail work.

CONNECTING HIKERS AND BUILDING COMMUNITY In addition to being good for the heart and mind, outdoor recreation is vital to our state’s economy and quality of life. The desire to celebrate and promote the power of nature brings people together. Thanks to the voices of our members and supporters, WTA has become a powerful force to protect trails. By coming together, hikers are creating an influential community that is shaping the future of recreation in Washington.

When Matt and Kirsten moved to the Northwest, they knew hiking would be a big part of their lives, but they weren’t sure where to start. When a co-worker referred Kirsten to wta.org she was thrilled to discover the Hiking Guide. Soon the couple began searching trip reports for trails to explore.

In honor of Washington Trails Day, thousands of people signed petitions in support of funding for trails and public lands. We personally delivered more than 2,500 signatures to Washington, D.C. — carrying your passion from the trail to halls of Congress.

WTA’s online community is one of the largest of its kind and, thanks to your support, our trip reporters helped us celebrate a major milestone. We surpassed 100,000 trip reports submitted online. More than 20,000 reports were submitted in 2017 alone.

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: MATT & KIRSTEN AUSTIN

“We became members because we were just so appreciative of this amazing resource. There was nothing nearly so extensive back in California. It’s how we get outside — we’re so thankful it exists.” — MATT AND KIRSTEN, SEATTLE Top: Photo by Lauren Lo Middle: Photo courtesy Matt and Kirsten Austin

WTA improved our website to bring together the collective wisdom of the hiking community, ensuring trail enthusiasts have what they need for outdoor adventures across the state.
